24 The First Tes
Naruto and the others continued chatting together as they waited for Ibiki. About an hour later, he finally returned. However, this time he was accompanied by a number of other Ninjas who appeared to be Chunin Level.
"Alright, now that the little disruption is over, show your ID card to one of the proctors and take a seat number," said Ibiki loudly. "Once you have it, take your seat and await for further instructions."
Everyone was seated within minutes and in front of each Genin was placed a booklet. Naruto had already guessed that it was going to be a written test judging by the fact that the test was going to be held in a classroom. Surprisingly, Naruto was seated next to the bubbly Fuu who was glancing at him excitedly.
"This test has a few rules," declared Ibiki loudly. "No. 1: Each person will start off with 10 points where each question answered wrongly reduces a point. No. 2: The total score is based on what your team achieves as a whole. No. 3: If you're caught cheating, you will lose 2 points. Once you're caught 5 times, your whole team gets disqualified automatically. Question 10 will be answered last. You have 45 minutes to finish your test. You may start now."
As the queue was given, everyone started flipping open their test papers. Naruto was shocked to find the content of the test. This was not something that Genins could answer. In fact, even some low level Chunins will struggle to answer them. It was not difficult for Naruto to answer them, however, he was sure that 90% of the Genins taking the examination could not pass it.
Naruto looked up and scanned the room and noticed there were a few people already writing their answers. He focused on one of the Genins who was busy answering the questions and noticed something shocking.
'That's no Genin,' thought Naruto in realisation. 'I see now ... they've mixed Chunins who know the answers already in the mix. This is a simple info gathering test.'
This test could not get any easier for Naruto. He already knew the answers. Even if he did not, he could use his Sharingan to copy the hand movements of one of the Chunins who was added into the mix. Even if he did not use his Sharingan, Naruto's affinity for Fire Release had developed to the point where he could sense the heat signature omitted by other living organisms. By using that, he would still be able to sense the hand movements of the other Ninjas and copy what they were writing. That's just how sensitive his sensing abilities had become.
In just a mere 10 minutes, Naruto had already finished answering all his questions. With nothing else to do, Naruto entered a meditative state. Lately, his ability to sense the Chakra that was in the air had grown considerably stronger. Naruto was not shre what kind of Chakra it was, but it felt natural and considerably purer than the Chakra that he possesed. He did not want to risk absorbing it as he did not know yet just what type of Chakra it actually was.
As Naruto was meditating, there were Genins left and right who were getting eliminated for being caught cheating. Time slowly passed, and very soon, half of the classroom had become empty.
"You have 5 minutes left," said Ibiki, reminding everyone of the time left. "Start finishing off the answer you are on."
Ibiki's reminder brought Naruto out of his meditation. He glanced around the room and noriced that just over half of the intial roomful of Ninjas had already been eliminated. So far, all of the current Hidden Leaf ninjas had survived.
'This is actually quite surprising since they don't teach us intel gathering at the Academy,' thought Naruto. 'I need to talk to the old man about this. Things needs to change some more.'
Naruto started brainstorming in his mind about the different aspects of being a Ninja. Since he would one day possess a team of his own, he needs to formulate a training plan to carry out for his future team. He could not simply rely on the system the village currently had. The Hidden Leaf was simply too mediocre and the long period of peace it was blessed with at present did not help. Even with the training manuals Naruto had giftes to the old man Hokage would take a few years before it would show its full potential.
"Everyone, stop writing now," said Ibiki as the 45 minute time limit had finished. "Now that those not qualified to take the 10th question has been weeded out, it's time to pose the 10th question. However, you must know that this final question has its own rules. No. 1: You are free to choose whether or not you want to answer the question. Should you choose not to answer, you automatically fail but your team will be safe. You will have the option to take the exam again. However, should you choose to answer the question and fail it, your entire team will be banned from taking the Chunin exam ever again. This means, you will remain a Genin for the rest of your life."
"What! That's not fair!" shouted someone. "Some of us are retaking this exam."
"That's tough luck on your part," growled Ibiki dangerously. "So, is there anyone willing to answer the final question?"
Naruto stared at Ibiki with narrowed eyed as he was deep in contemplation. He knew Ibiki was the head of the Torture and Interrogation department and he specialised in Mental Torture.
Naruto then looked around the room and took note of everyone's facial expressions. He noticed the troubled looks everyone had. They could not decide whether they should risk answering the final question or not. On one hand, should they refuse, only they would fail but their team would progress without them. However, should they choose to answer the question and get it wrong, their entire team would remain Genins forever.
Naruto glanced back at Ibiki as he was still deep in thought. 'I see, so that's his plan. I wonder how many have realised it by now. Shikamaru must have caught on by now. He's pretty smart. Ino too. Chouji will follow Shikamaru's lead so he's safe too.
I'm not worried about Sasuke either. He may be an arrogant prick, but he's not stupid. I'm a little worried about Sakura though.
As for Tenten's team, I'm not sure about them. As for Hinata's team, except for that dumb Kiba, Hinata and Shino should be safe too. They're also smart. I just hope Kiba doesn't mess it up for them.'
A few minutes had passed and there were 2 more teams who had given up. The rest simply remained in their seats.
"Naruto! Are you paying attention or not?" asked Ibiki angrily. Earlier he appeared to be asleep and now he was in a daze. This made him even more angry. "NARUTO!
"Relax, I'm paying attention," said Naruto. "Just get on with the final question. You're just wasting time."
"Are you confident to answer the final question?" asked Ibiki for confirmations.
"Of course!" declared Naruto boldly as he slammed his hand on his table. "I will still achieve my dreams even if I remain a Genin for the rest if my life, as the strongest Genin alive!"
Ibiki looked around the room to see the remaining Genins were slightly inspired by his speech.
"I see, since that's the case and nobody wants to leave, you all PASS!" declared Ibiki loudly.
"What! Why?" asked Kiba.
'As I figured, he's too dumb to realise the question really was the final question,' thought Naruto.
"The first part of the test was intel gathering," explained Ibiki. "If you all remember correctly, I told you all that you will lose points and be disqualified IF you get caught cheating. That means you have to cheat WITHOUT getting caught. Intel gathering is one of the skills a Ninja has to have. Having the right information means half the battle is already won.
The second part of the test was in the form of the 10th question. It served to test your courage. As Chunins, you will be given the responsibility to lead your own teams. Would you give up a mission just because it was hard? You need to have the courage to lead your teams to success. There are only two things worse than a strong enemy; they are coward and stupid leaders. Not only would it lead to the failure of a mission, it might even endanger the Ninja's entire village."
"I see," said Kiba in awe and realisation.
Just then, the window opened and entered a woman. She was fairly tall and was of slender frame. She had light brown, pupil-less eyes and black hair with a blue tint and was styled in a short, spiky, fanned-ponytail. She wore a fitted mesh body suit that covered her from her neck down to her thighs. Over this, she wore a tan overcoat with a purple in-seam and a pocket on each side, a dark orange mini-skirt, a dark blue belt, and pale grey shin guards.
"Ibiki, your test seems to be over," said the woman. "You seem to have given them an easy one since so many passed. Well, it's time to cut them in half. ALRIGHT, YOU BUNCH OF NO GOOS NINJA WANNABES! I'M THE PROCTOR OF THE SECOND TEST, ANKO MITARASHI! IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR LAZY BUMS TO THE TRAINING GROUND 44! ANYONE WHO DOESN'T MAKE IT WITHIN 15 MINUTES AUTOMATICALLY FAILS!!!"
'This woman's crazy,' thought Naruto as he used hia Body Flicker Techniques, closely followed by Hinata. 'She's hot but she's also crazy! A deadly combination.'
Training Groubs 44 went by went by another more popular name, The Forest of Death. It was a training ground that was the deadliest in the entire Hidden Leaf Village and was reserved only for Chunin Level and above Ninjas. It was here that round 2 of the Chunin Promotion exams were always held.
What made The Forest of Death truly deadly were the various monsters that were found within, ranging from giant venomous apiders to gigantic ferocious tigers and massive grizzly bears.
The Forest of Death was avoided by the majority of Ninjas. However, the only person who was crazy enough to think of it as a home was Anko. It was here where she would often walk around comfortably and felt right at home. Whenever boredom would take over, she would fight against any creature she could find.
Once all the Genins taking the examination arrived at the entrance of Training Ground 44, Anko looked at them all with an evil smirk as she placed her hands on her hips. "Alright, you bunch of weakass shits, welcome to my home; Training Ground 44. It also goes by the name, Forest of Death!"
Anko looked around and felt satisfied by the desired reactions of the many Genins. She naturally did not notice Naruto yawning, otherwise, she would have simply attacked him just to get a reaction out of him.
"Now then," continued Anko. "I'll be handing out a scroll to each team. There are two types of scrolls; a Heaven's scroll and an Earth's scroll. Your job is to acquire the scroll you don't have from another team and make it to the tower in the middle of the forest. Your time limit is 5 days. Go to the tables on the left or right side and get your respective scrolls. You will also need to sign a declaration form stating that the Hidden Leaf Village will not be held responsible for any deaths that might occur inside the forest. That is all."
The Genins from various villages started shuffling towards the tables that were placed on the two sides of the forest entrance. Each team did as they were told and a few minutes later, after having collected their scrolls and signed their declaration forms, were entering the forest from various smaller entrances that could be found behind the bigger main entrance.
"Alright, now that the little disruption is over, show your ID card to one of the proctors and take a seat number," said Ibiki loudly. "Once you have it, take your seat and await for further instructions."
