28 THIRD EYE

"Here," I said, carelessly tossing a piece of Elenite to Dmitri.

"I expected nothing less from you," he said with respect in his voice, turning the stone in his hands and examining it carefully. "To be honest, I doubted that even you would manage to find one of these so quickly."

"Where there's a will there's a way," I said evasively, not wanting to admit that I found it by accident. "How valuable is it to us?"

"I don't know yet," Dmitri shook his head. "I want to tinker with it to find out how it works and see what can be done with it."

"I also have this," I said, a little smugly, pulling the amplifier out of my inventory.

The blacksmith's eyes widened and his mouth slightly opened, but he quickly recovered.

"This changes a lot, Vasily," he said, looking me straight in the eyes.

"Let's test it on the armor?" I suggested, holding my hand over the recently forged shiny cuirass. If all goes well, I would camp in the dungeon until I provided myself with a complete set of stones.

"We can do better than that!" Dmitri exclaimed excitedly. "I will now forge a small shield that can be attached to the bracers, and we will improve its characteristics with this Piece of Black Rock! You have just one, right? It's not enough for a weapon, but we can use its maximum potential on a shield!"

He was probably right. Seems I won't be getting much sleep tonight.

Sitting down in a corner and looking at the blacksmith enthusiastically wave his hammer, I decided to spend my time analyzing the latest events. Usually, there was something constantly going on during the day so I never really had time to sit and just think; but here, in this relaxed atmosphere, I could finally sort things out.

My paladins, for starters. Right now I was pleased with them, and if things continue at this pace I could use them to make up one of my main weaknesses in combat. The fact that some of the local monsters had skin that you couldn't so much as scratch was the biggest issue for most people. But I had never faced an enemy impervious to my magic. My main problem was not having enough time to attack, and my paladins could now buy me that missing time. If they manage to take the hits while healing each other, like some immortal twins with hands on each other's shoulders, then I would be able to destroy any enemy from a distance without being distracted. Victory over strong opponents meant both valuable ingredients, and, perhaps, some treasures. I was already looking forward to it. As soon as we make the necessary preparations, we'll arrange a raid and farm some loot.

As for me, after today's hard work I managed to raise my strength to 112 points, dexterity to 110 points, endurance to 120 points, and intelligence to hundred points. If I'm lucky, tomorrow I would be able to reach the maximum level of Advanced Deception. I better not postpone doing that, as having high stats was my main advantage in fights with those against whom I could use magic only when Arkobaleno was active.

Seeing that the shield was still far from being made, I decided to prepare and conduct a small experiment. Now seemed a good time for it; the location was good, too. I put a pile of Elenite and a pouch with Chaosite innards received from Baldy in front of me. I inhaled the fumes of a Tincture of Intelligence, which temporarily added plus thirty bonus points to my intelligence, as well as seventy out of the hundred that I already had, raising it to 200 points.

Your intelligence has reached 200.

You have unlocked Third Eye.

You can see the features of the subjects related to your profession.

Your spells now have a secondary effect.

At first glance, it didn't seem like anything special; I expected something more. But I didn't have time to waste, my intelligence would return to normal in about four hours. I had only one shot to get this right.

Chaosite innards hadn't had any description before. Baldy told what they could do and what they were for, but I had no reason to trust him unconditionally. There was also Elenite that offered some information, but which was, for me personally, purely informative, with no practical use. I didn't want to have to depend on Dmitri when it came to improving my gear.

So, let's have a look.

Red Elenite

Used as a catalyst for alchemical reactions

While using magic, it can trigger enchanting. Available for weapons and fabric clothing.

Innards of Chaosite Cadavers

Mixture of innards of Chaosite Cadavers. Extracted in a proper way, they can last for a year. Used as a base for rare and epic potions. When soaked in water they create an Abyss Repellent.

The effect ended. Temporary weakness retreated quickly. No matter, it was definitely worth it. I doubted that I could make such advanced potions, but at least I could see what the Abyss Repellent was for. I ran to the kitchen, took one of the pots, emptied the pouch of innards into it, poured some water over them, and hid it in my cave. All I could do was to wait and hope that the smell won't be very strong. I could now move to a more interesting part of my recent discoveries — the enchantments.

I brought Elenite to my cave. Nobody disturbed me since my neighbors moved out. Having summoned my scythe, I first sprinkled it with the reddish stone. Nothing happened. I tried to imagine infusing magic into it, but that also had no effect. I then instinctively put my hand on the largest stone and rubbed the weapon with it with a sliding motion. Is it just me, or is it getting smaller? Repeat! Again and again! With each stroke the metal became denser and covered with red glitter, and the wooden shaft grew darker. The scythe itself gradually grew in size. Soon, it was at least half my height again. Observing the process with fascination, I felt that something was wrong only when I realized that I could barely hold the weapon. It wasn't the scythe that grew bigger or heavier, but my health points that had almost reached zero. Using Elenite used up my health, just like casting spells did. That's what the phrase "using magic" meant. Was this my way of enchanting things? How was I supposed to know when to stop?

As soon as the last thought formed, the answer came almost immediately.

Enchanting of a simple scythe has been started.

60 seconds until the object is destroyed. Use the amplifier.

So there was a catch! How did I miss it?! The description clearly said that the process would only be triggered! Now what? I only had one amplifier, and it was at the blacksmith's now. Even if he hadn't used it yet, I wouldn't have enough time to go and get it. Think, Cat, think! There must be some way out. Everyone else is playing by the standard rules. But you've already broken them by practicing alchemy. What do I have that others don't? Magic!

With some effort I imbued the scythe with Flame Flow. My hands trembled. If only it worked!

You have created a Fiery Scythe.

Damage: 50 (physical); 50 (fire)

I stared wide-eyed at the dangerous weapon, which occasionally flared up. From an ordinary scythe that looked fit only for cutting crops, it had become something that inspired respect. Its damage had soared from fifteen to a hundred! And given that I still had Elenite, and that my magic was infinite, the process of enchantment could be continued.

I ran to Lena and Cyril, took the Elenite they had brought, along with a pair gloves, a hat, a light jacket and a few other things that they hadn't worn for a long time, but were still wearable. The description had said something about fabric clothing, and I was going to test whether a heap of clothes fit that concept. But first I wanted to try and improve the scythe further. What if I imbue it with not fire but, say, healing? Although I wanted to test this new idea badly, I couldn't do enchantment. So one stone per item was the limit. Well then, next time I should plan everything out in advance. I should also ask Dmitri to make me another scythe. One for every occasion.

And now for the clothes. I took off all of my armor. The first thing I reached for weren't the newly brought things, but my own t-shirt. I sprinkled it with Elenite and started rubbing. For a moment, I feared that nothing would happen. A second later, my worn out, rag like shirt began to return to its original shape. The hole on the shoulder blade, as well as all of the scuffs and the fringe on the sleeves disappeared. Even if I couldn't add new bonuses to items, using enchantment as a method of repair was my unique skill.

I cast Weakening on the shirt lying in my arms when the system asked for the amplifier.

Added resistance to curses: +10%

On the clothes I had taken from my followers, I tested the effects of the other spells. Healing gave an increase to regeneration, Stone Skin to armor, and Flame Flow to fire resistance. The latter could be useful only in a fight against someone with the same skillset as me. However, protection and healing were good, but not great. I decided to go with curse resistance. Curses very nasty things that could, if not noticed in time, change the outcome of any battle. Having enchanted all the remaining items with the help of Weakening, I made two discoveries: one good, and one not so good. The bad news was that the overall effect depended on a five-item set, so a complete change of clothes was necessary. I decided to keep the shoes, the pants, the t-shirt, the cap and the gloves. Everything else was to be burned, so that no one could discover the results of my experiments. Sure, I could try to hide them, but then there would always be a risk someone stealing or accidentally finding them. I had no place for such items in my inventory as it had a finite number of slots. I will try to keep my enchanting ability a secret as long as possible.

The good news was that I got a bonus when I put on the five items with the same enchantment — level one immunity to curses. At first, I was glad, but then I became afraid that I wouldn't be able to use Weakening for accelerated development. Checking my healing, I saw that it now cast level two regeneration. There was nothing to fear then; curses would work the same as before.

Putting my old armor over my new set of clothes, I looked at myself from all sides. At first glance, it was hard to say than anything had changed. That was good. With a pleased smile, I decided to go back to Dmitri and see how far he had gotten with enchanting the shield. I came just in time. The happy redhead, entirely covered with soot, held out a small black shield with 500 defense. A couple of hours ago I would've been delighted, now I could only say "not bad." I could use it against the snake monsters. I just had to make sure to block their attacks properly. Such high defense would definitely come in handy to the paladins, but my thing with spells was still better. Keeping in mind that one could combine all of this…

"What do you think?" A white smile shined on his sooth covered face. He was obviously proud of his work and expected me to be too.

"Cool," I replied, giving him thumbs up and touched the flaming scythe that was in my inventory.
