146 Koko Must Live

His knees were terribly shaking as he looked up the surge of running water from the upper part of the creek. They were away from their neighbors and shouting would be futile. He couldn't be heard due to the heavy rain. If help would come, it would already be too late. The current was fast and before he could come up with a rescue team, they would already be broken into pieces and washed towards the sea.

He ran back towards the house and shouted for help.

"Rina! Rina! Anna and Koko were swept out by the water. How can we call for help? " His voice was hoarse and quivering.

Jia's mother, Marina, almost collapsed upon hearing him. Her heart immediately blocked out in fear. Fortunately, she thought of something.

"The budyong, Samuel, the budyong! " She yelled, with knees rapidly shaking.

Samuel's eyes lit up. Yes, the budyong. Why did he not thought about it?

The budyong shell were used by the neighborhood to call for help in times of emergency. Every household had it and through time, it had become a necessity. By blowing an air into its hole, it would make a loud sound that echo all throughout the neighborhood and the men would always rush up towards the sound. The next household to hear the first call of alarm, would also blow their horn, and the other next to hear, would also blow theirs, until the whole neighborhood would be notified...

A budyong shell, commonly known as the horned helmet, is scientifically known as Cassis cornuta. Identified as an extremely large sea snail, it belonged to a marine gastropod mollusc,  in the family Cassidae.

The length of the shell varies between 50 mm and 410 mm. It is the largest of all helmet shells. It has a very solid, heavy, rotund shell with large, horn-like knobs and a wide, flat base. The shell has a dorsally pale orange colour, its base vivid orange, faintly marked with white and brown shades.

Few minutes after blowing his budyong, the men in their community came running towards them. and Jia's father met them ahead outside. Soon, they were all running towards the direction of the creek. They followed its course and hoped to see them entangled in a shrub, rocks or planks.

Luckily, the local authority in charge of typhoon preparation team, sent troops towards the residents near the creek since it was already reported to have claimed numbers of children. Down towards the direction of the sea, the creek was wider and many residents chose to dwell closer due to the fertile soil and easy access to water source.

They men took turns in calling out the stubborn residents to evacuate through their trompa horn speakers. They also used it as their public address system in giving out instructions.

As they heard the sound of budyong and the commotion of men by the creek pathways, they immediately dispersed towards the farthest part of the creek before it opened to the sea. One of them were calling for more troops. It would be more difficult to find the victim once they would be washed out into the sea.

While rolling into the waters, Jia tried hard to keep her mind sharp. Awarded many times as the best swimmer in every interschool competition or throughout the yearly national meet, her rigid training would not apply to her present situation. The current was too strong and their fall was just too dangerous. Anytime they could be hit by planks of woods, hard objects or washed - out rocks. Much worse, was the threat of falling into a cliff. The creek followed the rocky course down the hills towards the inlet of the sea.

Jia's agility came out through the rush of her adrenalin. In her every turn, she quickly tossed herself back and made sure that she wouldn't be separated far from Koko. All throughout the time, she kept on shouting an instruction, telling him to grasp into anything. Many times, she was able to hold on to a vine but since Koko continued to be swept away, she released herself to catch him up.

Seeing the danger ahead, if she could not make it ahead of Koko, they would not survive. They were already nearing towards a cliff, in which the course of the creek would turn into a straight, vertical drop down.

Luckily, due to washed down objects like branches and water hewn- down trees, their flow was slowed down. She was somehow relieved that they were not being hit hard. Finally, few meters before the cliff, she saw a large branch of a tree drooping down horizontally. Some of its smaller branches were dipped into the waters, blocking momentarily those lighter objects from getting swept out. If they could hold on to it, they would have the hope.

This was already their last chance to be saved before they would fall headlong into the cliff. She looked at Koko who was now rolling weakly ahead of her. They were both good in swimming and diving but he was already draining physically. Perhaps, he was injured, she thought. But the thought made her more frightened.

"Koko, hop on to the branch ahead! " Jia shouted fearfully, frightened that he would miss it. But Koko was already limply rolling. With fear and determination to be saved, she felt a surge of another adrenalin rush, prompting her to grasp into vines, swung herself forward and leap ahead to block him. Fortunately, the creek was rich with hanging vines.

She was swept once more for few seconds until she got hold of the big branch of the tree that obstructed the water's pathway. However, it took a strength and will to survive to be able to hold into the branch since the pressure was strong. And they were only both eight years old!

Finally being able to block Koko with her body, she released one hand to pick him up and hold him. However, Koko was already too weak and holding him with one hand longer was impossible. Aside from that, she was also using much strength to go against the current.

With the top of her voice and with a sincere prayer to survive, she shouted for help. Koko must live! He had his two brothers to support and provide. What would they do without him? What would happen to his dream? What would happen to the hopes given on him as the achiever of their school's honor and reputation?

The fact that they were still alive until that moment and the fact that they were not badly injured, was already a great miracle. Her prodigy of strength now was not normal. They must live, they must survive!

"Heeeeeeeelp! "

Her voice echoed through the walls of the hills surrounding the long course of the angry creek.
