69 Destroying the Bridge
With the rapid clatter of horse hooves, dozens of knights rushed out from the tunnel with torches in their hands. They were highly skilled at riding, as they could easily rein their horses when they saw the canyon, which was less than twenty meters away from the end of the tunnel. They then scattered and rearranged themselves.
"What a spectacular lava river..." a knight let out a heartfelt sigh.
"There are traces of human activities here!" Another knight found something and shouted.
Just then, a hoarse and faint voice came to them. "General, it's me. Help me..."
The knights were shocked. They looked at the direction in which the voice had come from, and saw a bony, dirty hand sticking out from behind a stone band, waving desperately.
Several of the knights slowly moved forward toward the arm on their horses, while the others kept a watch for any enemies. When the knights approached the stone band, a dirty and ragged figure emerged in their sights. He looked worse than a beggar, and was totally unrecognizable with a thick layer of oil dirt on his face. A strange odor emitted from his body. When the knights arrived, he was still lying on the ground with his shank being pinned onto the ground by a long sword. It amazed the knights that he was still able to chew loudly with his right arm holding onto a large piece of meat from an unknown kind of animal.
"Who are you?"A knight asked loudly.
"Is General... Quincy here? I am Leopold!" Leopold mumbled. He knew that he was very discourteous now, but compared to the excruciating feeling of hunger, discourteousness was nothing important.
"Who is it?" A tall figure appeared in front of Leopold. "Leopold? Why... do you look like this?"
Leopold had just swallowed the meat in his mouth and was going to bite into another chunk, but he froze immediately upon hearing General Quincy's voice. He then slowly raised his head, and his endless grievances turned into a burst of shrill cries.
"Is it really you?"
"You must avenge me, General..."
"I thought those bandits were... God bless!" Quincy dismounted and shouted. "Tell me, who did this to you?"
"The mercenary! That damned mercenary!!" Leopold said with gnashed teeth.
"Which mercenary?" Quincy was confused.
"The one who killed Lord Mario!"
"Mario... That guy!" Quincy's face suddenly became gloomy. "Is he alone?"
"Yes, he is alone."
"General, general..." Two knights responsible for watching the surroundings suddenly exclaimed simultaneously.
"What?" Quincy shouted in anger.
"We saw a shadow across the bridge just now!"
Leopold shuddered all over as if something had triggered him. "That's him, General! He just left! You must catch him, General..."
Some quick-tempered knights were about to dash onto the bridge with their steeds, but they were quickly stopped by Quincy. "Hold on!" he ordered.
The knights stood still and stared at Quincy, who strode to the bridgehead, reached out one of his feet, and stomped heavily several times on the end of the bridge. The iron chain of nearly hundreds of meters in length started to sway.
Quincy watched it patiently for a moment and decided that it was safe to cross. Then, he waved his hand, signaling them to cross. The knights ran to the bridgehead and rushed toward the other end, one after the other.
"Don't leave me here, General!" Leopold cried.
"You, and you." Quincy pointed at two knights at random. "Stay here and take care of him."
"General..." Strangely, Leopold felt insecure. He didn't know why, but he wanted Quincy to stay. But he couldn't find a reason to ask him to do so.
Quincy nodded his head and set foot on the steel cable bridge. There were a total of three caravans that had disappeared into this tunnel, including the ones led by Leopold. All of this was done by the mercenary, and they were also the ones who had killed Mario. As the highest commander in this secret tunnel, he would be held accountable for this. If he failed, the rest of his life and that of his families' would be spent in a slave camp.
Leopold looked blankly at Quincy's shadow. Suddenly, a voice came beside his ear, "I am sorry, My Lord."
"What?" Leopold did not understand. But the next moment, a sharp pain spread from his calf, so sharp that it even made him dumbfounded for a moment. Then, a harsh scream was let out, "Ah... What the hell are you doing?!"
"It's all right. The pain won't last long, My Lord." The knight svmiled, and threw the long sword onto the ground.
Ding... A crisp sound of colliding between the long sword and ground came. Then, another 'ding' came. The knight was shocked. Why did such a sound emerge twice? While he was still confused, a third 'ding' echoed in the air. This time, he realized that something was wrong. He turned around and saw a figure striking the iron chain.
Clank... A strip of the iron chain broke. The steel cable bridge started moving around, and the person shifted to the other side and continued striking the iron chain. The knight suddenly realized that someone was destroying the bridge!
"Kill him! Quick!" They were greatly frightened and rushed toward the other side of the bridge at the fastest speed possible, but it was too late. As soon as they reached the middle of the bridge, the other end of the iron chain broke. The bridge started to shake violently, frightening the two knights who had immediately laid down on the plates, grasping the gaps between the plates firmly and not daring to move another step.
Han Jin clapped his hands, took out a fire charm from his space ring, and threw it into midair. The moment the charm left his hand, it turned into a strange fire ball and streaked across the sky at an amazing speed.
"Boom!" A huge rock around twenty meters over the bridge was hit, causing numerous debris to fall. The huge rock was ordinary to Leopold, but from Han Jin's point of view, it was clear that the rock had been hollowed out into the depth of the wall!
Han Jin then threw out another fire charm. The huge rock couldn't withstand the collision any more and thudded down on to the steel bridge. The two knights were dumbstruck and stared at the falling rock, which was at least tens of thousands of kilograms. With a loud bang, the ten-odds iron chains fixed on the bridge simultaneously broke off in an instant. Some of the chains swung in midair, while some lashed onto both sides of the canyon, causing sand and stones to fall all over the place.
Leopold laid on the ground without moving a single muscle. A chain swung toward his direction and nearly hit him. Fortunately, it only split a large piece of beef into two. After a long time, he raised his head with his heart that had slightly recovered from the shock, as he wanted to have a look around. Suddenly, a foot trod onto his hand. Then, a hand appeared and naturally pulled the space ring off of his finger.
