CH 238

“Heh ……”

“This is awesome ……”

…… It shouldn’t have been too long since we went shopping. As if to confirm this, Makina took out her pocket watch and looked at the garden and the clock alternately.

In about two hours, we had a cabin-like building and a stable in our yard. Basleigh-sensei had also returned to the house and was looking at us and Fath-san with a complicated look, so we began to explain.

“Oh …… teacher, starting today, Makina has become Fath-san’s apprentice. She moved here so that she can train her.”

“I see, so it’s true that we’ll be taking care of her here.”

Even though they were acquaintances, she was apparently concerned when she saw that the garden had been remodeled without her knowledge. Then Fath-san came out of the cabin, saw us, and came over to us.

“You’re back earlier than expected. You could have enjoyed yourself a little longer, you know? It’s still not cleaned up yet too.”

“No, we were mainly shopping for groceries, so we’ll do that another time.”

“Nevertheless, you built a hut and stables while we were away …… Are you good at this sort of thing, Master?”

“Of course I called in a carpenter. Though I think he was an acquaintance of heer.”

Fath-san looks at Basleigh-sensei like that.

“Now that mention it, you said you knew a carpenter.”

“Yeah. I’m sure Daihachi-kun can do this? Right, Daihachi-kun!”

“It’s a piece of cake.”

“Whoa! There was someone there …… That surprised me ……”

A man came out of the shadows of the stables with a big face, and Makina jumped up and went around my back. As usual, she’s not a fan of ghosts and the like.

The man called Daihachi stood up and walked over to us, and Basleigh-sensei called out to him.

“Are you finished?”

“Yeah, just put some straw on the ground and the horse will be happy! I’m going home now then.”

“Ah, what about the payment?”

“I’m getting it from that old lady over there …… Do you live with this guy? I’m sure It’s never boring.”

(T/N: He means Basleigh.)

“Haha, yeah.”

Daihachi-san laughed with two toothy grins and waved his hand as he left the house. I guess they don’t hate you, after all, Basleigh-sensei.

“But I’m glad he did it so quickly. Because I was thinking of having you use Basleigh-sensei’s room.”

“I didn’t think I was going to get kicked out in a day!? Thank you so much! Thank you so much!”

“U-Umu.”

While crying, she grabbed Fath-san’s hand and shook it, and Fath-san nodded. As I was smiling at the sight, Makina opened her mouth.

“I’m going to make dinner now then! Lars and the others can relax and wait.”

“Should I help too?”

“Lars prepared it in the morning, so I’ll take care of dinner.”

Makina replies with smiles at me. Then Fath-san saw Makina’s parcel and shouted.

“Hmm, that looks like it’s a fish, doesn’t it?”

“What? Yes, maybe …… you don’t like fish?”

“No, I like it because I live in the mountains. How about this fish?”

“?”

Fath-san goes back into the cabin and immediately came out with something in heer hand. It was a rather familiar item.

“A charcoal grill, that brings back memories.”

It was a so-called shichirin, but there is no official name for it in this world, so any tool used to make a fire to keep warm or to cook food is uniformly called a furnace. When we were still poor, we used to eat under the night sky in the garden using a horizontal shichirin …… a cooking range.

(T/N: Shichirin means “seven wheels” and it is a small charcoal grill.)

“I’m sure this will make for a very flavorful grilled fish. We have a little charcoal, too.”

“This is nice. Makina, let’s use it.”

“We’ll use the charcoal furnace for the fish, then. Then I’ll go inside and prepare the salad and rice.”

“I’ll leave it to you.”

After I got the fish, I walked into the house humming, and Fath-san threw the charcoal into the fire.

“I’ll light it.”

“Okay, then I’ll ask you.”

I used a small fire to light the charcoal, which smoldered and smoked a little, and then slowly turned red. I quickly put the net on top.

“There is a certain elegance to it. Oh, let me take out the best bacon we’ve got now!”

“This is magnificent.”

“Of course we have that, too.”

Basleigh-sensei came in from her room with a bottle of sake and a glass that she had brought home yesterday. Fath-san chuckled and they immediately started drinking.

But it was standing room only, so while I waited for the furnace to heat up, I moved to a corner of the yard to use a leftover log as a chair.

“”

Magic control is my specialty, so I made a chair that’s a little bit thicker than what I’m used to, and I’m going to give it to Fath-san.

“You can’t relax while standing, right? Please use this.”

“……”

“Hmm? What’s wrong?”

When Fath-san was staring at me, I asked her with a furrowed brow, and she sat down in her chair and opened her mouth.

“I’ve been thinking about this since I first saw you, but no ordinary person, huh. There are not many people who can handle that wind magic with such finesse. It is much harder to make it small and powerful than it is to make it strong and large.”

“That’s what Verna-sensei said too. I think it was important to learn magic and swords from someone who can be called a top-notch expert. In addition, my skill [Jack-of-all-Trades] will make it stronger the more I work hard.”

“I see. So that’s how you’re able to get stronger at that age …… You’ve had a lot of training from an early age, huh. That’s why you’re not worth training.”

Fath-san laughed and placed the bacon on the warmed net. Making sure to keep the fish from making scent, she placed it at the edge. Then Basleigh-sensei opened her mouth.

“Lars-kun is not worth training?”

“Yes. I guess he’s more interested in fighting than teaching. I’d like to see him fight for real.”

“I’ll pass on that. It’s not that I really like to fight.”

“Ho-ho, well, we’ll see? The strong attract the strong. I don’t see a problem with that, because you’re ready to fight when the fight is inevitable. However, it would certainly be better if Makina had my skills to stand beside you. She fell in love with such a difficult man.”

“…… I’m not always here, after all. It’s a request from me too.”

I don’t think I’ll stick my head and get involved myself, but I don’t want anything to happen to Makina when I’m not looking. When I bowed my head, Fath-san placed his hand gently on my head and said.

“Ho-ho, I see you care for her very much. Leave it to me, I will train her to be closer to you. I may need Lars to help me with this, so please do.”

“Of course.”

“Chewing …… That’s youth for you ……”

“I’m glad you’re taking it easy, Basleigh-sensei. Well, we’ve been asked to take it easy and do some training. How’s your work going, teacher?”

“It’s not perfect yet, so I’ll have to wait a little longer. We have to be on the lookout for “The Gospel’s Descent”, and the hunt for the remnants of the Treant, as well as the goblins and orcs that have been lurking due to the Treants, will keep us busy. Besides–“

Basleigh-sensei said, turning her attention to the baking fish.

“–We’ll have to survey the waters, and I’m sure we’ll have plenty of work to do. But don’t worry, it’s not like anything is going to happen anytime soon. I’ll be here for a while!”

I don’t know what to worry about, but I nodded my head for now.

Soon after, Makina arrived with rice and salad, and we toasted to welcome our new roommate, Fath-san, who had joined us on the second day.

“Please take care of me starting tomorrow!”

“Yes, but don’t overdo it, and listen to me carefully, okay?”

True to her words, the next day Makina’s training began in earnest.

Is it time for a new case?

So what about training? Do you have a good idea to do it at the same time?

Thank you for reading!

[Afterword Theater]

“The key is Makina-chan. ……”

What do you mean?

“Makina will be kidnapped, Lars will snap, and the Royal Capital will be destroyed.”

That’s not the main character anymore, is it?
