57 Chapter 57
"Are you sure, my friend?" Quickstep responded to Meric.
"I'm perfectly sure, Quickstep." Meric assured the bald immortal.
"Did you count it twice?" Quickstep asked again.
"I did. You can trust me, Quickstep. I top my arithmetic class in the academy." Meric replied to the bald immortal.
"Okay, thank you! You're a true friend, Meric." Quickstep said softly as he gently put one of his hands on his friend's shoulder. Friends really made life easier. Although he was betrayed before, he still didn't let one failure close his doors on friendship. It was nice to live as an optimistic ant, Quickstep thought.
"I will always be a true friend for you, Quickstep. You can count on me anytime." Meric declared to the bald immortal. He said the words as convincing as he could possibly make without sounding fake.
"Hahaha! I love you, my friend!" Quickstep responded to Meric. He hugged his friend tightly.
"Ummm… Quickstep, can you please let go of me now?" Meric said to the bald immortal. He wanted to dodge the hug in the first place but found that he could simply not evade. Quickstep was just too fast. And now it was all too late. He was squished firmly in the bald immortal's embrace.
Worse than that, he could feel something big and long perched on his neck area. If he was a little bit shorter, then he would be kissing the thing right now. He tried moving away from the embrace but even an inch of free room was not regained.
"True friends have to hug for a minute, my friend. It is the mark of sincerity between friends. Are you uncomfortable down there? Would it be okay if I raised you up so we could hug face to face?" Quickstep asked Meric.
He wondered about his friend's reluctant participation in the hug. Is he about to be betrayed again? He mused.
"No need, Quickstep. I'm fine right here." Meric answered the bald immortal. He closed his eyes and silently counted the seconds.
"Hahaha! I'm sorry I doubted you, Meric. You really are a real friend." Quickstep said after 60 seconds had passed by.
"I can be your greatest friend, Quickstep. I'm tired now. See you tomorrow, okay? Goodnight!" Meric said to the bald immortal after he waited for the longest minute of his life. He was panicked by what happened.
What if someone saw them? What would they think? He was shaken by what had occurred. And that snake... Meric shivered as he recalled how that felt. He only wanted to get away from Quickstep as quickly as possible and as far as he could possibly be. Bizarre things kept happening around the bald immortal.
Just like Ezedius, Meric had experienced it firsthand. He wouldn't like to tempt fate anymore for further escalating oddities to befall him.
"But we just bonded. Let us talk a little bit more and get to know each other better, my friend." Quickstep said to Meric. What do true friends do? They talk and listen to each other. Every pain and worry must be shared. Quickstep planned to do just that with his real friend, Meric.
