107 CHAPTER 106
Boze leaned away from his elbow and typed on the keyboard. He pushed the lever standing beside the Nim box, then stretched his fatigued muscles. He had not stayed up this late before. It had been a long time though. Long before he became Captain of Sky-Dancer. His bones had forgotten those sleepless days and nights without food, in a weather that can turn the sun to an ice ball. Kira made him like this, yes, she brought back old gloomy days and she will pay severely for it.
He yawned wide without covering his mouth. His stomach rumbled too as if announcing their presence. Boze was not the one to starve. His position of Captainship gave him access to any food his palate might desire. But now he was yawing like an idiot and doing the job of a common servant.
The thought made him want to pick up something and throw it. How could Kira betray him? He had given her a simple assignment to watch over his hunt. But she had disobeyed him instead. She had even run away with his trophy, with his sweat. It settles the matter though, at least, this proves his point. The girl was good for nothing and would disobey any upright order, no matter how trivial. She was as disobedient and dishonest, a trait which if he was not mistaken, she had taken after from her wretched father.
Boze smiled despite himself when a familiar sound echoed through the wall, bashing the atmosphere until they were lost somewhere in the door. The feeling was exhilarating, and he knew he couldn't resist, even if he tries. He could feel his soul, having legs of their own, as they threatened to jump out of his skin.
Turning his attention to the green cube, his smiles widened. The green cube was becoming too useful. Usually, it was used to incubate Miens babies born whenever they were out in space, searching for food. Over the past two hundred years, there have been no babies, and the green cube had been sitting in the ship, drinking dust. But all that had changed. He had caught two alien creatures. Two creatures that were different from the people of Mien. But that was useless. Kira, had run away with one of them. If she was planning on selling him out before the Vudga, then she was messing with the wrong kind of Mien. He was determined to pursue her, even if she runs into the hands of the underworld. He would not stop until he collects what is rightfully his.
The beep on the blue screen made him turn away from the creature in the green cube. 64 hertz pulsed on the blue screen, blinking with the beeping sounds and giving out a yellow pulse.
Boze's smile crooked to a frown. 64 Hertz was the least of what he had expected. 70 hertz would have been better. Well, there is time for everything after all. He had been watching the creature in the green cube as it tries to find its way out of the puzzle. But 64 Hertz suggests that the show was over. The creature had worked out the problem intelligently, which will make the price tag he would set on it perfect.
Hissing and pulling out the plug, Boze realized that he had other pressing matters to attend to other than watching the screen all day. But it had been fun though, and he wished he could continue to run more tests on the creature, to see how vast its knowledge was. Well, that would be a pleasure for his leisure in two hours' time.
His pink hands returned to the lever on his right, and he pulled them up, making the smoky cloud on the green cube and the illusion and false world, surrounding the creature, to disappear.
"Any luck?" Boze asked when he noticed for the first time that Xerta had walked…no, sneaked into the room unannounced. The Mien was like a viper, and even though Boze utilizes his skills sometimes to spy on other people, he hated it when Xerta uses the same tricks on him. He would warn him afterward, though. Less he sneaks in someday and finds him doing the unthinkable.
"As dead as the sea. It was all blank. Hours of searching, all Gone with the Wind." Xerta said, resting his hands on the green cube, with worries lacing the corner of his face and eyes.
The wrinkle on his uniform reminded Boze again, how once upon a time, they had served other Captains faithfully. They were the best in the Founders and had served for years just to earn a spot in the crew of Sky-Dancer spaceship. The sweat of their brow had been the bread they fed on for these past years, but time had come to their rescue and had earned them. Not just a spot on the Sky-Dancer spaceship, but the Captain and assistant Captain. They were like the owners and were the ones who make the decisions now.
But Kira had brought back the memory of their days of heavy labor. It was her unruly character that had rumpled Xerta's clothes. The rest of the crew had retired home, and as the newest member of the Founders, Kira was supposed to look after Sky-Dancer while they have a taste of their warm bed. But now she was gone, stealing his trophy.
"How long will it last," Xerta asked. He still had that worried look about him. They hung on the helm of his shoulders, making it easy to detect.
"It is done, Xet. You look old," Boze placed back the lever as soon as the red light went off. He took hold of the green cube's plug and was about to pull them when Xerta said.
"Not a fancy young boy now, you see."
"I know, but" Boze straightened but did not look at the other Mien. "You know; I still feel like a fancy kid."
Xerta laughed.
"Am serious," Boze turned his attention to Xerta.
The lined on his skins were becoming dark, and his Mienin also rounded his entire body like the root of a buttress tree. The Mienin was the only thing that told how old they were. Not that it reveals their age, of course, but the number of Mienins on their body gave a clear picture of their probable age.
Xerta was a few weeks older than him, the last time he checked. They were friends from birth. Even though Xerta had lost one of his arms to the training of the Founders, he was still as strong as any older Mien. Twice he had saved Boze, twice Boze had saved him. Their friendship had long metamorphosed into a brotherhood. Perhaps they were even destined to die together, Xerta had joked once.
"If you continue to speak like that," Xerta was saying, "Then I will be forced to think that the green cube's illusion is getting to you too,"
Boze laughed this time, hard enough to bend over.
"And what will make you believe that, Xet. I am not like Huchins Columbus, who invented the machine that killed him and his entire family."
"Humph," Xerta scoffed and turned his gaze to Boze, "Columbus was one of the biggest fools that will ever live in the history of Mien. Believe me. He is not the worst but, he is certainly the one without the brain, even though he had claimed he had."
"Serves him right. His knowledge had puffed up, and he had thought he knew all there is to life. He had refused the council of Vudga and had relied on his own education. What a tragedy that had been. Too bad he didn't live a legacy by which we would remember him,"
"No, that's not true. Depending on your definition of legacy, though, because we seem to remember him whenever foolishness was mentioned."
"That's true," Boze laugher echoed. Xerta joined in the laughter and they held it for a very long time until the banging on the walls of the green cube brought their attention back to the room.
"Your specimen is away, Boze"
"Right on time," Boze said and pulled out the plug of the green cube. A hissing sound followed the beep, and the green light that was on the cube blinked once before turning to white.
Standing on the cube, right opposite to Xerta, was the second creature he had found in the engine room. The looks on his sea-blue eyes portrayed the confusion and the fright lingering on every corner. Its blond hair was almost like the color of his skin, and from Boze speculation, he might be older than Kira, or at the same age bracket as her.
The other alien that had run away with Kira was much older and handsome. If Boze had him in his custody, he was sure that most of the people in Vudga would pick him because of his looks. But Kira…the pain knotted Boze's stomach. He was going to strangle the girl alive.
