95 CHAPTER 94 MIENS
The water bubbled as he struggled with the trigger that was attached to the wall of the vessel. After drowning twice and eaten by the shark, he had been wise enough not to repeat his mistakes. At least that showed that he was not as foolish as the other Miens had implied. If only he had been this wise at the beginning, maybe she would not have lost her precious Gim to Kendrick, whose grinned she could still see in her mind's eyes. They had placed a bet, and she had lost. Thrice.
Kira hissed and picked up her pipe. She collected her lighter from her breast pocket where she always left them and lighted the free end of the pipe before placing them on her lips. The familiar smell of tobacco covered her nostril as she inhaled. It made her relax. It made her forget that the others were in the cafeteria and had left here in this room to look after this creature they had found lying helpless in the engine room. No one had said a thing. Even the captain who found it was keeping everyone in the dark. If the creature was so small that it could be stashed into a bag, Kira was sure that the captain would have hidden the creature from everyone on the ship. The man was strange. Always doing stuff that would bring glory and praise to his house. So selfish.
She puffs out the white smoke and watched them dwindle in the air until they were lost to nothing. Try as hard as she could, it was difficult to form the ring of smoke, just like the way her father does them whenever he sucks from his pipe. He always does them perfectly, but it often was not as easy as they may appear.
Folding her leg hands over her chest to support the right, she took a long sip from the pipe again. It glowed with an ember light, contrasting the dim white light in the room. Her father was her icon. Thinking about him now made a small smile appear on the corner of her lips. Those brown skin that was filled with lines had been her solace ever since her mother died. Though he was not the oldest or the wisest among the Miens, she always enjoys staying with him. She always enjoys his words and those majestic tales he always tells. He had been adventurous in his prime. Perhaps she had taken that from him.
The white smoke spread across her face as she let them out, reluctantly. Her eyes glowed with enthusiasm, however, when she noticed another bubble in the water. It was the shark. It had turned back to the creature in the water and was swimming towards it.
This will be fun. Kira smiled as she continued to watch. The creature in the water had persisted in trying to pull the trigger, but its eyes narrowed with fear when it noticed the shark swimming dangerously towards its direction. Kira laughed. She always likes seeing those fright in someone's eyes. It made her remember when she had first shot her fingers with her arrow.
Trying and trying with failed attempt, the creature in the blue water seemed to pause in its struggle as it observed the trigger. As if filled with knowledge, it pushed the trigger instead and the water and the shark disappeared.
Kira's left brow elevated to her forehead. They had not anticipated that the creature could have guessed correctly. Even though she had believed it would figure the way out eventually, she had not guessed it would be in a very short time.
She sucked her pipe and puff the smoke before walking towards the glass, where the creature was. It seemed to be panting. With the water gone and the shark, Kira could see the sign of relief lining the creature's face. It was amusing though, for the simple fact that the water and the shark had been created out of the illusion, to ascertain how the creature thinks. But now it wore a look that said it was ready to urinate on itself.
"Who are you?" The creature asked when it noticed her. The voice was deep. Almost like that of her father whenever he was angry that she had dropped one of his precious gargets. She had not understood what it was saying, but she could guess that it was trying to tell her something. And its language was odd, too. They sounded a bit familiar, but it was hard to place a name on where she had first seen or heard something like that.
"No es peligroso (it is not dangerous)," Kira said. She broke the ember end of her pipe on the glass and returned them into her pocket. The creature's eyes were strange too. They were as bluish as the seawater it had been in. Its hair was also dark, contrasting the Babyface and the bulging muscle which lined its beige skin. There was no wrinkle on its body, which was also odd. For the deep voice, she had expected a more wrinkled face, just like her father's or like that of the captain.
"Where am I, what are you doing to me?"
Kira shook her head and placed her hands on the glass cube before the warnings of Captain Boze could ring in her ears. He had ordered her to stay clear from the cube as they were yet to find out what the creature was. But what was the need of making rules if it would not be thwarted in one direction or the other?
"Esto no es real (it is not real)" Kira said, knocking on the hologram glass so that her point will be emphasized more.
The creature scratched its head. Was it thinking or in a state of confusion? Kira watched keenly, observing its movement as it paced the green cube. Perhaps it was trying to recall something or hoping to wake up from a nightmare that wasn't a dream.
Jerking up its head as if what it was trying to recall had just jumped into its memory, it hurried towards the cube where Kira was and said, "Que es este lugar (what is this place)?"
Kira jumped back. The ascent was not perfect, but she had understood what the creature had said. The words were clear. She could still hear them resounding in her ear like a detonator. Her eyes continued to widen with surprise as she looked at it. It was staring at her, telling her to help it in her own language, in the language of the Miens.
"Tu hablas mi idioma (you speak my language)" Kira pointed, stepping away from the green cube. The warnings of Captain Boze resounded in her ears again, and just then her eyes went to the only door in the green room. A part of her told her to rush down to the cafeteria and call the others. But they would laugh at her afterward and call her some scary little girl that was still too little to join the Space-dancer ship. No, Kira bit down the fright. Going to call the crew was not an option. She was ready and would face this creature without fear.
"Ayuadame (help me)"
Kira lifted her head to the deep voice of the creature. That it could speak Mien made her want to jump out of her skin. Its body was strange, and the blue eyes and hair and voice. How on the biggest ship in Vudga was the creature able to speak Mien? Or could this be some kind of trick by Boze. That man was full of surprises. He could have programmed this creature like he did with the dog and made them believe that he had found it wandering in the engine room. Kira could not guess any better, but something within her knew that the probability of that being true was indeterminate. The hair of the creature was not from this planet, not even its baby, creaseless face. It was too perfect to be designed by the human hand. It was too perfect to be made by chance.
"Ayuadame (help me)" The creature said and sat on the floor as if dejected. Its face was hanging low and the sadness that seemed to envelop it, made Kira want to wax with sympathy. She bit her underlips, shunning the voice of Boze—which was screaming in her head—as she walked reluctantly towards the creature.
"Mi nombre es Kira (my name is Kira)" Kira whispered, but loud enough that it could hear.
The creature lifted its head, and their eyes met. For that ephemeral period, Kira thought something in her chest snapped. The creature was beautiful. Whatever god that designed it was a truly a God of beauty. She had not seen his face properly until now. Or had she? Yes, of course. She had seen his face but had allowed her fears and the ugliness of her heart cloud her judgment.
"Mi nombre es, Ham (my name is Ham)"
Kira smiled. So it has a name too. Today was just a day of surprise.
"Hablas, Araen?" Ham asked.
Kira nodded. Now she could place a name on his initial language. It was Araen, the native tongue of Vulga. She was not perfect in it though, but she could express herself very well in Araen without trouble.
"Yes, I speak Araen,"
Ham heaved as if that was the best thing it has ever heard in its life. It's next quest startled Kira.
"Please, where in the Heroes city am I?"
Kira hissed and picked up her pipe. She collected her lighter from her breast pocket where she always left them and lighted the free end of the pipe before placing them on her lips.
