79 CHAPTER 78-THE ATTACK
"You must hurry, Jeff," Anabel shouted and staggered into the room as she tried to find her footings. Jeff supported her weight, using his muscular arms to barricade her from reaching the floor. She buried her hands into her pocket and brought out an RCD-44 Air bike controller. With her first finger, she pushed the largest button on the control pad "Take this," She panted and handed the controller to Jeff "Take, Louise and get out of here."
"Get out? Buh, what happened?" Jeff struggled with her weight until they sat slowly on the floor "…and whose blood is that?"
"Not mine. Just get out of here. Zack will kill you if he finds you. You must hurry. I will try to send you the coordinate when the tension in the ship has eased a bit. Now go"
Zack.
Jeff tried to swallow, but realized just then that the fear in his stomach had taken the saliva in his mouth. He hated that name, everything about the name brought nothing but anger, sorrow, and… terror. That name reminded him of everything in his past life. They reminded him of the things he had promised himself to forgo. Yes, his mother had advised him to let vengeance fight for itself. It was a hard decision to make, but he had accepted and had promised to back away. He would bring Zack to justice eventually, but that would be on a legal term.
The man will not leave us alone though, no matter how hard I tried to avoid him. Jeff wiped his sweaty palms on his clothes.
"Who is she?" Ema pointed towards Annabel with her nose.
"This is Anabel Peters," Jeff grumbled "She is my mother," The look in Anabel's expression told him that she clearly was not happy that he hadn't told Ema about her root.
"Oh, nice to meet you, Mrs. Peters. But are we under attack?" Ema's voice boomed from behind.
"Yes," Anabel said. She released herself from Jeff's grip and stood up to her feet, walking towards the window. "The rest of the people are trying to fend off the attack. They won't hold on for long, but that would be the perfect way to lure those things away from you, you must use this opportunity wisely."
"You are not making any sense," Jeff furrowed his brow. The lines on his forehead deepened, however, when he saw what his mother was trying to do. She was looking for the clip underneath the windowsill, just at the base of the side edge. But how did she know it was there? Jeff wanted to ask. She had not been in this Air Tripler before, not in this room especially. How then has she known to find the hidden clips underneath the windowsill?
"It's the damned army, Jeff. They are the once I am afraid of" Anabel shouted. She still had her back turned to them, but Jeff could guess the frustration that certainly etched her aging face.
"They are going to kill you; they won't stop until you are dead. You must hurry and get out before it's too late" Anabel shoulders relaxed as she seemed to have found what she was looking for underneath the windowsill.
"Please, Jeff," She said, this time turning to face them. Those mother gaze of hers made Jeff's stomach tightened. She also held the clip on the windowsill with her left hands. Just one pull and fast-moving air would flush them out of the room.
"No, wait." Jeff stopped her. If she turned clip, they would be flushed into space. The only thing that could save them if that happens was the Air bike, whose control panel still registers in Jeff's palm "I won't run away while others put their lives in harm's way to protect me," He said and rested his hands on his belt, out of habit than reflex. He was disappointed when he realized that his Candor was in the other room.
"We die together. I am tired of running." Jeff said, standing his ground.
"Don't be a mule, Jeffred Peters. Your stubbornness will only let you get killed like your father." Anabel returned her gaze to the window and removed her hand from the clip.
Something cast a shadow over their window, making the bright stars to become dull, with the dark cloud which was covered with blood-red patches, fogging their vision and clothing their skin with a cold that could not be expressed in words.
"Zack Is here," Anabel whispered.
Jeff felt his heart tumble into his stomach as he watched the huge plane which covered the world. It was difficult to discern the actual makeup from the many lights lining every part of the body. He had never seen anything big in his life, not something this size. It made their airplane look like a grasshopper.
"Too late." Anabel complained and made for the door, "Come on, let's meet with the others."
The door had already opened before Jeff realized that he was the only one still staring at the breath-taking aircraft.
"Try to stay away from the window." His mother said and took the lead.
The hallway was dark and the only light that led their way was Anabel's glowing body and her dagger, which blazed with a blue splendor. She was of the Red linage, the linage of speed. Ema was also glowing, but her pulse was weak, like a dying firefly. The similarity was there; Jeff could see them now. Even though Ema's glow was weak, it portrayed the same grace as that of Anabel's.
Jeff swallowed and followed behind. He had never seen his mother use her Extracting powers before. Nor has he ever seen her with a dagger.
A shrilling sound thundered the hallway, but before Jeff could recollect himself, three bodies dropped on the floor. He looked down in horror at the single-wing creature. He had seen them once in Ema's apartment back in the academy.
"The Damned army" Jeff whispered
Anabel swerved her sword and shared an understanding expression with Ema. Like a flash of lightning, they disappeared into the hallway. More shrilling sound followed as their red glowing body danced in the dark, from one part of the hallway to another.
"You believe me now?" Anabel asked when Jeff met up with them. She and her sword were still glowing and about six to seven bodies of the creatures lie beneath her feet.
"These creatures would never stop coming. You need to get away before they kill everybody." Anabel pushed the green button on the wall and the door slide open.
"Aaron," She exclaimed and hurried to the man on the far side of the conference room.
Blood littered the floor, with the dead bodies of men and creatures alike. Jeff's heart skipped when they fell on Alex, who sat on the floor, panting.
"Alec, are you alright?" Jeff took the boy into his arms. His heartbeat raced when his eyes saw the deep cut on the boy's left foot. Nimrod heaved and sat down as if helpless.
"I am scared, Jeff. I am scared."
"I am so sorry, Alec." Jeff hugged the boy. He couldn't help the tears as they licked from his lacrimal gland and sipped down from his eyes. This was all his fault. He should have listened to his mother. He should have run away before any of this mess started.
"Jeff,"
Jeff wiped his eyes and lifted his head to the voice of his mother.
"The Watchers in the snake mountains only accept a maximum of two visitors. We would be abandoned at the gate if we all try to force ourselves inside. Take Louise and get away from here. I have set the coordinate to the Snake mountains in the air bike. That's the only place that is safe for you now."
"You will be fine, Alec," Jeff said and stood up "Please take care of him," He said to Nimrod before turning to his mother.
"What If they pursue you?" He asked.
"They wouldn't. Zack is obsessive, he would stop at nothing until he gets hold of you, but the snake mountain is a place he would never trend. The gate is somewhere near in the mountains; you will outrun them before they get to you." Anabel patted his shoulders. "what type of a mother am I?" she bit her lower lips with regret.
"The type that has a loving heart and would do everything within her power to keep everybody safe."
"Take care, my love," She smiled and hugged him. "Please, don't die"
"I will try not to," Jeff chuckled as they pulled apart
"You will need this," She said and handed him a Candor. It looked brand new from the stainless steel it was made off.
"Alec will lead you to Zone-3. I will contact you as soon as I can." Jeff said and walked the exit with Ema behind. He jumped into space as soon as he got to the door, afraid that if he wasted one more minute, he would change his mind.
"Get out? Buh, what happened?" Jeff struggled with her weight until they sat slowly on the floor "…and whose blood is that?"
