71 CHAPTER 70-THE VOICE
The Gidzel peanut crushed under Jeff's teeth as he chewed flippantly. He could hear the rumbling of his stomach despite the pleasing savor that flowed down his gullet. It was not enough; he needed more.
Jeff returned his hands into the container but frowned when he noticed that the can was empty. Disappointed, he finished the last peanut and threw the tin into the waste bin, then he blessed his throat with the pineapple juice, which sat on the passenger's seat. That would keep the hunger at bay, at least for now, until they decide to lands and resupply their stock.
Jeff unbuckled the seat belt and pushed the green autopilot button on the dashboard. The screen on the dashboard glowed from yellow to green, with a gentle beeping sound.
"System activating." Joci—a female programmed voice—announced over the speakers.
"Thank you Joci" Jeff said and gulped more of the pineapple juice.
"I marvel at your appetite these days. My god, you eat like an antelope," Alex pointed out. He was sitting on the control pilot chair that was abreast of Jeff's. In his hands was also a can of pineapple juice, which was still filled to the brim.
Jeff chucked "Says the boy who consumed two loaves of bread and a sandwich. And doughnuts too, all in one night"
"The bread had mold on it.
"And the sandwich and doughnuts?"
"Those were appetizers."
"Appetizers?" Jeff laughed, "You really know how to mess with words.
Alex sipped from his juice in a stylish manner, knowing that Jeff was watching him. His blond hair had grown and the strength in his eyes revealed how fast he was growing into adulthood. The boy was full of wisdom, even though he could talk a dead body back to life.
Jeff shook his head but remained silent. The boy had been his savior. He owed his life to him. Twice he had been captured and twice Alex had rescued him from the shackles that bind him. He just wishes above all that when Alex needs his help that he would be there to return the good favor.
Sitting up from his chair, Jeff pulled up the lever above and lazed his body into a standing position. They had been airborne for the past two days. Landing only to get supplies and refuel. It was no problem getting supplies, because most shops— stuck with food provision that could last a country about five years—down north, were totally desolate and abandoned. Plus, the houses down north were also empty. Jeff had collected some clothes too. They would have chosen one of the houses and lived their lives there, but Jeff was sure that whatever it was that chased those people out of their homes will return one day. He was not willing to be controlled again. Not after his experience with the regent and Vanessa.
"Any destination yet?" Came Alex's voice from the cockpit. Even from this point, the noise of the pineapple juice as they walked down his gullet could be heard.
Jeff only grumbled at the boy's question. He sauntered down the cabin, aiming for the other lever that rested on the west wall of the vessel. He pulled down the lever and waited until a green light flared, before letting go. They have been soaring for two days. Even though his memory had returned, he had not made any contact with his people. The thought of going back to the Heroes academy also lingered in his head. But on the other hand, he was not willing to return to the school without his friend, Ema.
The thought of her made his stomach churn. She seems to have disappeared from the surface of the earth. There was no trace of her. It was as if she never existed.
"You don't intend we fly forever, do you?" Alex asked when Jeff came back to the cockpit.
"No, not at all," Jeff said as he sat back on the chair.
Numerous thoughts ran through his head. He was not sure if going back to the Heroes city was the right call. He knew that the academy certainly might be looking for him. He was scared, not of the academy, but of the things that were after him. He didn't want to endanger the life of his mother or that of Alex, who had risked everything to save him. If what his father had said were true, then he had bigger problems resting on his shoulders. Since the world was crumbling on their heads, he will need to find a way to bridge the gap and save the people from annihilation. The thought of that also scared him to the bone. It was not every day that one wakes up to find out that they were the key to unlocking some evil a maniac who had terrorized the world for heaven knows how long.
Heroes city. The word jumped into his head even without him thinking about it. It was so soft that Alex did not hear. Jeff leaned back on the seat, stretching out his legs to relax on the dashboard.
The sound of his home town brought this sense of comfort that made him wish everything in his mind would just come through. It's been six years since he last saw his home.
Six solid years.
He couldn't help the image of his mother, which was already forming in his mind's eyes. This was not how he had envisioned his homecoming. He had hoped to graduate with the finest grade, and with a good career to start with. Even though he might not get to General Zack and avenge the death of his father, he was satisfied that his mother no longer brood over the death of her husband. Vengeance beget Vengeance, she will always say whenever he brings up the topic of avenging his father
"Heroes city," Jeff repeated, "We would head to the Heroes city." He announced, loud enough this time.
"Activating coordinate destination for The Heroes city," Joci—the programmed voice—said.
"Sounds great. Now, I can feel the grass on my feet again"
"If the grasses still exist."
"Huh?" Alex shot him a confused look.
"Never mind," Jeff said and looked the other way.
The white smoky color of the sky covered the vastness of the deep. It was hard not to see the round face of the sun from this point. Nothing existed here. It was a lone world of its own. Jeff couldn't help the thought. Anadan would be as desolate and empty as this one day. Unless he stops it. Unless he dies. His blood was the key.
His blood was the key and—
HELP!!
Jeff jerked up from his seat and pulled out his candor.
"What is it?" Alex asked and hurried up to his feet. "Are we under attack?"
"Don't tell me you did not hear that voice."
"What voice?"
"The one that just shouted—
Jeff thrilled off, and then without thinking, he started laughing.
Alex looked at him with a wide mouth.
"First, he said something about a voice and now he's laughing, good." Alex nodded his head and sat down "Have you taken your pills today? Because I think this is one of the early signs of madness."
Jeff continued to laugh for a while as if the younger boy's words had no effect on him. He placed his candor back on his belt and bit down the last laughter on his lips.
"Sometimes I forget you are just 10 years old." Jeff chuckled and sat on the control seat. He pulled down the leaver and deactivate the autopilot.
"Eleven" Alex corrected "Perhaps you can tell me what's going on"
Jeff obviously did not to hear as his gaze seemed to glue on the screen of the dashboard. He pulled down another leaver, and the plane swerved down, away from the white world. The view ahead now was covered with the blue color of the ocean. It stretched far into the distance until it touched the sky, somewhere in the horizon.
"Joci, is there any island in this part of the world?"
"Yes, there are 231 islands, all of which are made from large rocks."
"What is the problem Jeff, why are we suddenly looking for islands?" Alex asked.
"I can't explain it Lex, but I think my friend, Ema, is somewhere here."
"Picking coordinate" Joci announced, and the screen turned red, with amber lines running in circles. "Locating. Compass 2273 detected."
"Compass 2273?" Jeff let his thought wander.
"Helpful?" Alex asked
"Not really" Jeff scratched his head as the foggy memory struggles to form a clear image. He had seen that number before, somewhere, some…
"Yes" Jeff exclaimed as his stomach lifted with happiness "Ema had that compass on her before she was captured, they might have forgotten to take it off her."
"Good enough" Alex typed on the keyboard
"What are you doing?" Jeff asked
"Trying to find the location"
"But I thought Joci can do that?"
"We have our limits sir," Joci replied
"Oh, I see." Jeff nodded. He cupped his mouth with his hands and breathed out heavily.
Just hang in there Ema, I am coming for you.
"Bam," Alex stretched, "found it."
"Nice work, Alex, thank you."
"Let's go save your friend, shall we?"
Jeff returned his hands into the container but frowned when he noticed that the can was empty.
