70 CHAPTER 69-HELPLESS

"No, please don't?" Ema screamed and tried to kick, but could not move a limb. She fought with the belt of the hovering stretcher, struggling to wrestle her way into freedom. But all her efforts were proving abortive at the moment. If they had not drugged her, she was sure she could have felt the edge of the stiff belt, burring itself into her skin. The only thing that seemed to move in her body was her mouth and eyes. Even her neck was stiff on her shoulders, making it difficult for the air to pass freely into her lungs. Her heart was also pounding faster under her skin with adrenalin streaming into every part of her body, making her boil with anger and fright. She was helpless. God, she hated being in this position.

"Please, I beg you. Don't do this." She cried.

Her mind drifts back and forth as she tried to remain conscious. It was this helpless position that had made her run away from home. It was the very reason why she had signed up for the entrance examination at first. She hated being so fragile and stranded. The men in her childhood who had molested her, always held her it this position. She could still see their faces in her mind's eyes as they make their advancement. Even the stench in their breath was evergreen in her olfactory lobe and the slurry of their saliva as they licked their lips lustfully.

The scissors in the hands of the therapist snapped, bringing her wandering thoughts back to her body. The way they caught the white light and glinted was enough to send one's skeleton running out of their skin.

"I wouldn't have done any of this, my dear. But you seem to have lost your chip." The man said, but not sounding surprised. He was lowering the scissors toward her eyes now. Even though Ema wanted to move away, her body would not respond. It was as if a greater force held her in place, preventing her from moving a muscle.

"You think we are fools, right?" the man laughed. Ema looked away, hoping he would not notice the fallen scalp in her eyes. Or did he know already?

"Yes," The therapist continued, "Trisha found out about your little secret. She ordered me to eliminate you, but I pleaded with her to give you a second chance. I am only trying to help. I just want to put another Happy-tech, this time, in between your ciliary muscle. So, be a good girl while I do my best to keep you alive. I am your biggest fan, believe me. I enjoy watching you fight out there, in the arena where millions of people will be shrieking out in delight and calling out your name. Please be a good girl now. I don't want Trisha to get furious."

"No, please, don't do this."

"Shhh," the man shushed, "I expect you to be quiet. It's a painless procedure that is easy and time conserving."

Ema tried to kick again. The belt was still there and held her in place, but something else gave her comfort and hope. It was just a fragment, but she was glad that it was coming back to her. She could feel her body again. She could feel her legs and her limbs and the rough edge of the belt that held her to the stretcher. The adrenaline coursing through her body, this time, ignited an exhilarating feeling that she wouldn't remember when she last had one of those feelings.

She didn't know how she was doing it. Not that she cared. Nothing mattered now. Not while she was still lying like a potato bag on this bed. All she wanted to do was to get away from the claws of this man and his scissors, which were almost close to her eyes.

Ema struggled again. The pain and the misery and the feeling of helplessness were driving her crazy. She just wanted to get away, anywhere but this place. Anywhere far from the misery, she had suffered for three years. Anywhere close to Jeff.

A familiar sensation coursed through her body. She didn't know it was there; it was not supposed to be there, but she was glad to have it. She held on to its light and let it fill her. That sweet flow that tasted like honey in her mouth. That flow that made her invincible.

"Oh, no what are you doing?" The researcher asked as he stepped backward, clenching tightly on his scissors as though it was a solace. "Your eyes," He said, pointing at Ema, "Your eyes… your eyes are glowing… how is that possible?" He exclaimed and leaned on the small table, but the table was not strong enough to hold his weight, so he found himself crashing with some of the medical materials.

Ema on the other hand did not know what was happening, but she didn't care. It's been three years since she last used her Extractor power. It's been three solid years since she last glowed. The feeling was a comfort to her troubled breast, so instead of letting go, she embraced the power, letting it engulf her entire body.

"You are a demon, get away from me" The Therapist shouted and scrambled up to his feet. Ema did not let the surprise on his face to wither. She hurried towards him and knocked down the scissors he was holding. With her left hand, she drove a heavy punch into his stomach, slamming her head on his face and breaking the bridge of his nose.

The man groaned and staggered backward. He tried to find something to support his weight from touching the floor, but that was wishful thinking. He fell to the marble floor, with the scissors in his hands, sliding to the other side of the room.

Ema sat up from the bed. She could feel her body now. All the numb and pains and headaches were all gone like a puff of smoke. The extractor power still filled her with life. She was of the red linage, the fastest linage in history.

"You are so dead, Sparkle." The man said, wiping his bloody nose with the back of his hand. "You will surely pay" He groaned again and pushed the red button, just under the table where he leaned.

"You pay first," Ema said. She spanned in the air, and with one swift kick, she knocked the doctor unconscious to the ground.

The sound of marching footfalls followed the gossiping voice of the alarm. Almost immediately, as if they have been waiting, the entrance door broke open, revealing the chest of some white-suited army. They all had a shocker gun ready to fire.

Even as Ema watched them, she just couldn't place a name on their formation. Notwithstanding the little space in the room, they had arranged themselves in a very unique and orderly fashion. On their polished soulless face, just where the eyes should have been, was a reflection of Ema, staring back at her with pride and awe.

One of the keepers stepped forward and held out its shocker gun. The darkness in his face made it impossible to read the expression behind the glass helmet. They just stared at Ema blankly, with nothing but red lights to reveal the hate that lies underneath.

"You are under arrest for causing medical unrest." The Keeper who had stepped up said.

"Medical what?" Ema exclaimed, not believing her ears. Her eyes were still burning with radiance and the power of the extractor remained anew in her bones. She didn't want to let it go. Not yet though, not when she still has some trouble to face.

She knew she would have to let the power go in a few hours unless she wants to have migraines for the rest of the weeks.

"You have the right to remain silent or—

Ema picked one of the trays on the table and hauled it. The throw was so powerful that it sent the head of the Keeper rolling to the other side of the room.

"Wow, I still have my deadly touch." She exclaimed and picked a forceps and another tray. "So, let's say I decided not to go with your machine heads, what will you do to me?"

"Project 5," Another Keeper said as it stepped out from the others. "You are trying to resist the Keeper of the law. Avoid violence or we would be forced to send you back to prison."

"Prison" Ema laughed. "That will be over my dead body. You cannot drag me into prison. Not even a hundred of you."

"I repeat," The Keeper that had spoken earlier said. "Surrender now Mrs. Sparkle. Surrender and you will have the chance to stand trial."

"My name…" Ema gnashed her teeth, "Is Emazita long and I will drag your sorry ass to the street if you ever referred to me with that stupid name"

"Stand down, Ema," The Keeper said. It didn't wait for a new reply though as it gave the order and the killing started
