64 CHAPTER 63-RED

No, Ema said in her thought. I have seen worse, and I have survived it all. This won't be an exception. I will die perhaps one day, but not in the hands of my friend. Death is not an accident; it is an appointment. I must not die today. I must save myself. I must save my friend. I must save the world. I am a conqueror.

Biting her under lips to gulp the ire that was trying to surface, she opened her eyes. Jeff's fist was burning with strength, and the aura that was emanating from them sent more terror down her spine. The cries of the crowd and everything around stood still as she watched the fist which was meters away from her face and was approaching fast. An impact with those knuckles could crash any jaw, no matter the structure or the rigidity.

Ema's life kept flashing before her eyes as she braces herself for the inevitable. It's been a long time since she was this helpless and vulnerable. Even back in the orphanage home, when those men would beat her with their whip, she rarely showed any signs of weakness. Not because she was strong per se, but because she hated giving them the satisfaction. But now, it all seemed so new and painful. The scar of yesteryears had ripped open, and it was as if she was being beaten afresh. The beautiful face of Jeff made matters worse.

The screams of the crowd made her snap back to reality, bringing her wandering thoughts back to the limelight. Without thinking, she sought deep within herself and found that red little star pulsing slowly. She reached for it with eagerness and it filled her. The sweet sensation of the surge engulfed her body, streaming through all her blood vessels, giving life and strength to every weak part. She was of the red linage, the fastest linage in Anadan.

Her muscles jerked with delight as the power continued to flow through her veins. It tasted like honey on her taste bud, and the sweetness made her want to rest in its harmony forever. Her body was glowing now, not strong enough as she would have wanted it, but good enough to save her from the claws of death. She could see the weak pulse of her glowing body in the dark eyes of Jeff, whose fist was still coming towards her with an unimaginable speed. His fist was almost at her face, but everything slowed as she immediately reached for the device on her ear. She felt the small button on her head-plate and pushed it because her life depended on it.

"Click-Click-Click"

Came the voice of the head-plate as they transformed immediately into a black helmet and covered her face, just some few seconds before Jeff's knuckle met its target.

Ema's world went blank and darkness seemed to sweep her into oblivion. Her ears rang and went deaf to the screams of the crowd, which still caroused the voice of the night. Nothing in the world seemed to matter, and as the impact carried her into the air, she just wanted to rest in its peace. The stillness and serenity were welcoming, making her forget the world that was outside the door. Every ligament and bone in her body seemed to relax. It was the best satisfaction one could have ever asked for.

She twirls in the air and landed with a heavy thud on the cobber stone floor, rolling several times like a weightless object, tossed by the wind, to the edge of the dome.

Perhaps eternity had passed, she couldn't say. It was hard to keep track of time. Her lungs burned as she coughed her world back to reality and opened her eyes. It must have been hours, but the crowd was still screaming in delight. Maybe the impact had been so great that she thought she had passed out for what seemed to be forever.

Shaking the dust off her face, she tried to suck in air into her lungs but the first trial to breathe up air was a struggle. It was as if the powerful grip of Jeff was still on her neck, sapping the air away slowly.

She whizzed and was glad when her breathing settled to normal after the third and fourth effort. She had landed on her side, but nothing seemed to be broken. She was grateful to be alive.

Ema tried to lift her head, but everything was revolving. The buzzing sound of the damaged head plate was causing her ear to ring, so she removed and threw it away to spare her the noise. Her arms were burning with the fangs of pain, but she was totally fine. Save for the strong-hologram-armor, SHA-40, which covered her jumpsuit, she doubts she would still be alive. The strong-hologram-armor, SHA-40, had cushioned her fall.

"I can do this" Ema reassured herself and struggled up to her feet. The revolving vision had stopped and now she could see Jeff running towards her. He thinks he is powerful; he has forgotten how deadly I am.

Ema ran towards her Roller-board—which was lying solo next to her. She picked it up and swung it with all her might towards Jeff. She didn't wait to see if the board would meet its target, instead; she followed behind, somersaulting in the air with a high kick.

Jeff dodged the board at the last moment but went flying backward when Ema's kick slammed his chest.

The crowd grew still and watched with wide mouths. Unbelief dusted their faces, their champion was invincible, nobody had ever touched him before.

The ground vibrated when Jeff landed heavily on the cobber stone, so great was the fall that the stone broke, compressing inward like the face of a broken glass.

Ema smiled victoriously despite herself, but lines folded her youthful face when the screams of the crowd thundered again. Their cries went wild, blasting the wall of the dome, with no evidence that their champion had fallen some minute ago.

Ema thought she had ripped the delight off the faces of these monsters. Well, maybe the favorite adage which says that 'Undisputed champions fall sometimes, but remaining in the mud is the real failure' was in play here.

Jeff was rising to his feet, causing more cheers from the audience. He was fuming. Even from the distance, Ema could feel the radiance of his anger. If he was surprised by Ema's little trick, he didn't show. His face was a draught of emotion and his eyes still had that cloud of darkness.

Ema activated her Roller-board and waited as Jeff charged towards her again. Neither of them was glowing, even though the temptation to glow was there, Ema tried to stay neutral. She didn't have enough Sol-X on her reserve. She would have to wait for the last minute to use the brief glow she had.

Jeff slides underneath, hoping to clear Ema off her feet, but Ema spins over his head and landed behind on her Roller-board, which was hovering there in time to keep her feet from reaching the ground. She smiled victoriously and made to soar away, but Jeff caught her board, keeping it in place.

Ema gasped at his strength. She pressed the green button on her belt, hoping that an increase in the speed of the Roller-board would pull his grip away. Even at the highest speed, the Roller-board only hummed violently as Jeff kept it rooted.

A little smile started to bright in his soulless eyes. That was when Ema realized what she had done. She jumped off the board when Jeff let go. The board soared uncontrollably at a high speed and slammed the dome, destroying the electronic field.

"INCREDIBLE" someone from the crowd shouted over the voice amplifier.

Ema rolled up to her feet. She threw a powerful punch at Jeff's face, but he dodged to the right. She didn't wait to cry over a split milk, instead; she follows it up with her elbow and then an uppercut. Jeff dodged again, but this time to the left. He deflected her right kick with a skillful technique and dashed his forehead on her face.

Throbbing pain shrouded from Ema's burning nose to every part of her body, causing her to gnash her teeth. She could only see tinny stars in the galaxy as tears clouded her double vision.

Another slam came in her stomach, this time even the strong-hologram-armor, SHA-40, was unable to bridge the pain from penetrating to her skin.

Her body shrieked when she screamed in anguish and curled on the floor. A metallic taste filled her mouth, she was drowning in her own blood.

Ema spat. She saw his red boots coming to stand over her. Every bone in her body protested when she lifted her eyes to meet his.

The bright light on the ceiling blurred her vision, but she was able to make out the dark cloud that still covered his eyes, too dark was the cloud that staring at it was like staring at a void. She was lost in his soulless eyes.

Lying here now she knew she had failed, he would kill her and become the Speedo champion. Her death was inevitable; she could feel its chilly hands slowly calling what life was left.
