1 Chapter 1 - My Sister Shot Me
Shen Shikong sat by the window of his laboratory in his wheelchair.
His face showed slight impatience and anxiety. He is waiting for the test results of his experiments. He slowly reached with his hand towards the thread near his chin and slowly moved it down to the the dragon shaped pendant hanging around his neck. It gave a slight silver lustre even though it is slightly rusted at few places. Whenever he is anxious, he touched the pendant. Strangely, it always relieved him of his anxiety and gave him peace and calmed him down.
At 31, Shikong is a very handsome man, only if not for his messy hair and sleepless crazy eyes. It has been six and half years since he lost function of the lower part of his body in an accident. Since then he is crazily trying to find a cure to stand again. He failed repeatedly until everything changed one year ago. He once again touched the dragon shaped pendant which brought a big change to him last year with a wry smile on his face.
As he touched the pendant, he remembered his father, who he hadn't met in seven years, the person who abandoned him after his unfortunate accident. Irony is, the reason for the cure is a gift he received from his father when he was a kid. His father, Shen Huang, is a very famous archaeologist. He discovered an ancient tomb twenty years ago which turned the world upside down. When he got back from his expedition, he gifted Shikong with a strange rock found in that site.
He was suddenly interrupted from his thoughts by the sound of door opening.
He turned his head to see a cute girl with a beautiful face, slender hands and legs wearing a beautiful red dress standing by the door.
"Brother Shikong", the girl smiled sweetly and walked towards him. He turned his wheelchair to look at her with a kind smile on his face.
"It's been a while. How are you brother Shen?" she asked.
"I'm great. How are you Miér?" Shikong asked with a smile on his face.
Shen Shenmi, 24 years old, his step sister, the one and only person who was kind to him after his accident. She met her for the first time six months after his accident when she introduced herself as his step sister. His father got married to another woman and started living with her in USA. After his mother passed away when he was 6 years old, even though his father was not always there, he never showed interested in any other woman. So it came as a shock to him. She said his father is busy with an archaeological finding and unable to come and she came to visit him on his stead.
At first, he was not sure how he felt about her. He suddenly had a sister and it was hard for him to accept it. But, she stayed with him for three months after meeting him. She said she was on a holiday and it was her first time visiting China. She was very kind to him at the time when there was no one for him. She encouraged him to find the cure and helped him in anyway she could. He got close to her at that time and started to really consider her as his sister and loved her like one. Even after she left, she kept in touch him everyday, and visited him every year since then.
"I'm fine brother. Why did you ask me to come suddenly?" She suddenly thought of something and exclaimed "Is it that you finally succeeded?" She couldn't hide her enthusiasm. There was also some complicated emotion shown in her face.
"Hahaha Miér, you guessed it right. I injected the cure to him yesterday. He will be conscious any minute now."
"I wanted you to be here when I finally reach my dream" he smiled kindly to his sister.
He thought about the last time he met his sister a year ago. She came to visit him like every year. But this time, she brought a letter with her from his father.
The letter mentioned how he was disappointed of his son and don't want to see him ever again. He was so angry at that time.
After not seeing his father for so many years, this is what he gets from his father? A written letter saying he was disappointed in him. He was not even willing to even speak with him in person, or at least through a phone. They did have their disagreements in the past due to his choice to become a scientist, but he didn't expect that letter at all and his father's disappointment in him.
More than sadness, he felt angry at his situation and his father, and he smashed the rock he received from his father as a gift when he was a kid.
He was astonished at that time to find the dragon shaped pendant inside the broken rock. It gave off a medicinal smell. He took the pendant and found the smell coming from the moss like substance on top of the pendant. He was intrigued at that time, and on a whim tested the moss like substance. Who would have that when he tested it, he found some new medicinal effect from the moss substance.
He believed this medicinal substance is what is necessary for his cure. With determination to prove his father wrong and to cure himself, he became crazier and dwell deeper into his experiments. He tested the results he found in various animals and got positive results.
He even lessened his contact with his sister due to him being busy with the experiments. Finally after almost a year and after various tests on animals, he found the cure and he required a patient to do final test.
He finally found a person, Marvin, who was introduced to him by his sister. He was a veteran who was injured in an international military operation and lost functionality of lower half of his body, just like him. He made some tests on him first to understand his condition, then he stabilised Marvin to optimum condition and finally yesterday he injected the cure into the patient.
The cure takes 24 hours to get results and so he invited his sister, the one person who stood by him, who encouraged him to go on when he almost gave up few times. He wanted her to see him succeed.
When he was reminiscing in his thoughts, he heard a sound from the speaker near the glass panel.
He moved his wheelchair towards the glass panel, his sister following behind him. He saw a man having mumbling and trying his best to get up from his bed on the other side of the panel.
He grabbed the mike next to him and spoke "Take it slow Mr. Marvin. You just woke up; it will take a while to get normal."
"Yes Doctor" Marvin replied groggily. He slowly got up and sat on the bed.
"How are you feeling? Can you feel your legs?" Shikong questioned Marvin with anticipation.
Marvin replied excitedly, "I can feel my legs Doctor". His toes twitched a little and moved slightly and he tried to move his legs slowly. Then he tried to get up from the stand.
"Slowly try to stand" said Shikong with excitement evident in his eyes.
Holding on the side of the bed, Marvin stood slowly. He couldn't contain his excitement. He tried to walk a bit like a baby. He got steady in a while and walked normally. He felt he is better than before his accident.
Suddenly, he stopped. He threw a kick in the air and a powerful gush of air moved from where he kicked. Then he threw a punch towards an empty enemy in front and another gush of air moved near his fists.
"I feel stronger than ever before and I feel like am still getting stronger" he exclaimed loudly.
"Of course you are, I made this cure after all" exclaimed Shikong proudly. He is genuinely felt proud of his success and felt happy that he will be cured just like Marvin.
"Yes, you are great, Doctor Shikong. This cure is unbelievable, you did a great job." Marvin agreed with Shikong.
"Thanks to you now we can go break the limits of human, and become more powerful." He continued speaking and looked at Shikong
He gave Shikong a sarcastic laugh and said, "Thanks for helping our organisation gain this new drug, with this we can achieve anything we want in this world, even rule it."
Shikong's face suddenly changed and he shouted angrily "What do you mean organization? And Drug? This is for curing me, and to help others like me who is also suffering. I didn't invent it to be used for and evil purpose."
"For someone who is smart enough to invent this drug, you really are idiotic sometimes Doctor Shikong" responded Marvin with a cold tone.
"We confirmed how efficient the drug is and if I am right all the records are in your laptop on your desk and you have 9 more samples right? What are you still waiting for, GO" spoke with a satirical laughter.
BANG
A loud gunshot and Shikong was thrown towards the glass panel. He felt an excruciating pain from his chest; he realised someone shot him through his heart from his back. The pain caused him to feel extremely dizzy. Shen Shikong looked up and saw Marvin looking at him with a cold smile.
He wondered who shot him and how that person got into the lab. He suddenly remembered his sister is also in the lab and scared what had happened to her. Even with so much pain and blood flowing continuously, he used all his strength to turn around to see if his sister is okay or something happened to her too.
But what he turned and saw who was there holding the gun, blood drained of his face. It was his sister Shen Shenmi.
