11 Chapter 11. A Diversion and My Man

It happened too quickly that before Ryas knew it, he was falling from the window backward and fast. With nothing to grab hold of he momentarily releases the Ethereal Spirit, creating an energy field surrounding his entire body, but not soon enough as he hits the ground with a thud landing flat on his back. His muscles had tensed up when he hit the ground causing a breath of air to escape his lungs and right out of his mouth. He hated using the Ethereal Spirit cheaply but it had happened too fast, and he had little to no time to react. He rolls over onto his side taking slow deep breaths until the tightness in his chest went away. If he had been an average man, without the power of the Ethereal Spirit, he would have been injured or possibly broken his back. Luckily he was not, and within a few moments, Ryas was back on his feet.

He still could not believe what had just happened as he moved behind the building to avoid anyone seeing him. Falling out of a window no more than twelve feet in the air? Never in his life had he seen or been part of such a laughable end. Thinking about it made him mad, and the inability to complete this simple task made him even more annoyed because now things just got complicated and he's going to have to create a diversion. A diversion that will bring more attention, something he was trying to avoid. That was the whole reason he volunteered himself in the first place because he was the most competent, but with that woman's foolish actions not only are things problematic now he almost got hurt too. He couldn't even remember the last time he had an injury. Now he was starting to regret his decision to help, but he knew Zehan needed this relationship with General Wey, and so Ryas sprinted off towards the storage room he saw earlier.

Meanwhile, right upstairs, Liang bursts through the doors to his surprise, sees his bride Yuliah on the floor with one shoe missing and her veil thrown across the floor. Immediately he notices the open window.

"Where are you trying to run off to?" He tilts his head to look at Yuliah sprawled out on the floor.

She could see Liang was drunk and when he drank he could be unpredictable. If she doesn't think things through his temper could get worse. Yuliah scrambles up from the floor and looks out the window. She doesn't see the man in black anywhere, and the drop was too high. If she jumped now, she'd break her ankles, and wouldn't be able to run away either. Crushed Yuliah turns back around and looks at Liang. She couldn't think of anything to say to him. She got so close to escaping and failing foolishly like this was humiliating. If only she had thrown that veil in another direction. Suddenly it came to her. Her veil! Yes! A tiny chance of hope!

"He lifted the veil. I'm not your bride, but his now," she tells Liang in an almost quiet voice.

"What the fuck did you just say?" Liang's voice was louder this time.

"He lifted the veil — the man in black. I'm his bride now," Yuliah's voice was shaky still unsure of what she was doing.

"Who the fuck is this Man in black?" Liang screams.

Yuliah's heart started racing as she closed her eyes briefly to take a breath. "My… He's my Man," she stammers out. Even though it felt a little unnatural to say because he wasn't her man, and she had no idea who he was, but she needed to make Liang believe it was real.

Liang was exhausted from standing around all day and drinking. He also didn't get to finish screwing that maid earlier in the broom closet, and then he had to put in a lot of effort to keep up his pretending in front of Yuliah's relatives too. His patience was thin by now. All he wanted to do was to come home have a few more drinks and consummate his marriage. He had been waiting for years for this moment, and in his mind, even though he was forcing her, it was not too much to ask for because she was a woman and woman could not survive without a Man. Yuliah doesn't see how good she has it but instead wants to play these games, and ruin everything he had worked so hard to build. He had enough. She was going to learn today how to behave as his wife.

"Your Man?" You don't have a fucken Man! I'm the only Man here!" Liang waves his hand at her. He was starting to wonder now if she was telling the truth because the window had been open, the veil was off, and he knew Yuliah would not be dumb enough to jump from this height.

"Is that why you were by the window?" He asks her moving to block the doorway.

"Yes, and I have a Man! He lifted the veil. I'm free to go now. That's the custom here," she tells him in her loudest voice.

It was a tone that he had never heard before but one that Liang didn't like. He shakes his head at Yuliah, "I'm sick and tired of the things that come out of your mouth! For once can you just shut the fuck up and think about things first before you say them!" Liang kicks the table next to him, sending the food and dishes from the wedding table scattering across the floor. The white porcelain dishes crash onto the ground, breaking into pieces while the table made a loud banging noise as it flips over onto the floor.

Yuliah quickly covers her ears, but she's desperate to leave and puts her hands back down gripping her dress tightly. "I'm leaving, and you can't stop me. He'll be back for me soon. So move!" She had no idea if the man in black was going to come back or not, but her will to leave had outgrown her fear of Liang at the moment.

"You bitch!" As Liang lunges forward towards Yuliah with his fists clenched. He wasn't going to let Yuliah leave especially with another Man, and he was going to make sure of that.

A few buildings over Ryas breaks into a storage room he saw earlier. It was full of supplies, some furniture and what looked like old Biah Family possessions. The building sat in the northeast corner of the Manor and was further away from the rest of the other structures. While going through the shelves, he came upon a pile of old books and scrolls. Old books that would be good to burn, and he begins to remove a few of the books from the shelf when something caught his eyes, "Geneoshi Blood Binding? How could this be here?" Everything from his world had been destroyed. Ryas search through the rest of the books on the shelf until he finds a few more items and folds them up, tucking them inside his shirt.

He continues going through the rest of the shelves until he finds a few buckets of lamp oil and remembering that there was an old fire pit earlier, he walks over to check the contents. Tinder and straw, this is what he needed to create a diversion. Ryas begin to douse the walls and floor with the lamp oil until a glossy layer of oil coats the entire room. With his knife, he strikes the flintstone until sparks shoot out catching onto the dry straw and a tiny fire flickers. With the fire in his hands' Ryas blows into it, breathing life into the flames as it grows bigger and bigger and then he drops it on to the trail of lamp oil below. As the oil catches fire and begins to burn Ryas exits the building heading for the banquet hall.
