The smell of blood and guts wasn't pleasant. Even though all three of them were used to blood and gore, it didn't prevent them from scrunching their noses a little. Removing the goblin from his sword, Kalin immediately gutted it with a sharp hunting knife, to make sure he didn't ruin the spleen. After procuring the organ, he couldn't help but sigh in relief. He regretted recklessly stabbing the goblin, as he had come less than a finger's width from damaging the spleen.
As the majority of goblin flesh is gross and diseased, large in part due to their less than stellar living conditions and diets, not much of their bodies can be salvaged, not that many people would try to eat them if they could. Although the rare casters known as shamans might have uses for other parts of the body, the only parts worth money are the spleen, tongue, teeth, and eyes. Oddly enough, goblin tongues are a fairly common commodity used in the creation of several poisons and antidotes. The same could be said for goblin teeth which are used in the creation of weak charms. The eyes, on the other hand, are a different story. As a small and very fragile but edible part of the goblin body, goblin eyes are a delicacy in some cultures. Though most people would place them next to raw orc testicles in a list of worst delicacies, some people claim that they are to die for. As even the force of a heavy fall can cause them to burst, combined with the fact that they are hard to extract, most people don't bother with the harvesting of them.
Luckily for the three of them, they were able to harvest 4 eyes, as well as 12 spleens and tongues, about 30 odd teeth. They were also able to recover 3 of the 5 arrows shot by Artemis. After storing them in his magic bag and burying the corpses, the three of them decided to clean the blood and guts off their clothes.
"I know water magic," said Artemis as she pulled her magic staff out of her quiver. "Allow me to rinse us off." After which, a stream of water came from her staff, like a hose.
The clothing of Artemis and Yami was green and white. Their tops were sleeveless and covered all their torsos save a small midriff. It was made of a flowing white which turned translucent from the water, exposing their breasts to the sight of Kalin. They were also wearing skirts that flowed down to their mid-thigh that also exposed the panties they were wearing, one red and the other black. Their clothing was lined with a green and gold pattern that seemed to denote their status of servants of spirits and gods.
Not knowing that Kalin was a boy, Artemis and Yami didn't do anything to hide their exposed breasts or panties. After observing the two pairs of nipples that had gotten hard from the cold water, Kalin used his light magic to help dry them off to prevent chaffing. The warm glow enveloped them, causing them a comfort similar to that of sitting next to a fireplace in winter, or entering a sauna after being in a cold pool. "You are both pretty strong," commented Kalin, "why have you failed so many quests?"
Not minding his blunt question, Artemis answered, "Neither of us can fight up close. With just the two of us, we're easy targets. Even fighting 4 goblins is risky without somebody to protect us."
Understanding, Kalin just nodded before saying, "Oh, that makes sense." After confirming their loot, he asked, "Do you want to head back now or keep going?"
Artemis, high off their victory said, "We're already here, let's keep going!"
After sending Alene out to scout, and adjusting the attack plan, the trio proceeded to hunt several more smaller groups goblins before Kalin decided to call it quits. Although she wanted to continue, he could see that Artemis and Yami were starting to get tired. Having hunted a total of 41 goblins, they had already earned at least 400 pints, not including the other materials they gathered.
"Do we really have to leave?" Asked Artemis. She knew deep down that it was the correct decision, but she couldn't help but feel a high when she thought about how much money they'd earned so far.
They were now at the edge of the forest again, this time with the dangers behind them. Kalin just smiled at her and said, "I'm pretty sure that if we ran into another large group of goblins that you'd need me to carry you back." After saying this he motioned to her twin sister that was leaning her chin on his shoulder and wrapping her arms around him from behind. "My back seems to be occupied at the moment, so I'd have to make two trips."
Seeing Kalin place his hands on Yami's thighs, and lifting her onto his back, Artemis gave an apologetic look to him and sighed in surrender. After sighing, it seemed like all the fatigue that had been displaced from the adrenaline of fighting hit her at once, proving how tired she really was. For her it was a long 30 minutes back to Den. It didn't help that her sister had such a peaceful look on her face and started sniffing Kalin, commenting on how good he smelled. Her embarrassment for Yami's antics, combined with her own for somehow agreeing with her, as well as her fatigue, caused the trip to feel even longer than she thought possible.
For Yami, the journey couldn't have felt faster. She was like a cat basking in the light. If possible, she felt like she would like to be carried by Kalin forever. She also felt strangely attracted to the smell that the succubus gave off. Making sure she wouldn't fall off, she wrapped her body tighter around his, squeezing her breasts against his back and causing his hands to slip up her thigh to her butt. After leaving the tower with the proof of completing the quest 4 times and 7 goblin eyes, they dragged themselves to the guild.
As it was only a couple hours past noon, it was fairly empty in the Adventurer's Guild. Pauline was just finishing her shift when she saw a familiar trio approach her counter. After inwardly sighing for relief that they didn't die, she said, "Hello ladies, were you able to finish your quest?"
Kalin flashed his crooked smile before Artemis handed their guild cards over to the receptionist because Kalin's hands were occupied and Yami was nodding off. Looking at their accomplishments for the day, Pauline couldn't help but be further impressed with the young trio. "Four times before 2:00, huh? That's pretty amazing for your first party hunt." Looking at the odd number of points, she said, "According to the rules of the guild, the 40 points will be split three ways. Because of the odd number, they will be rounded up giving each of you 14 guild points." After she finished scanning them through the terminal, Kalin's points changed from 1 to 15, while Yami and Artemis had an increase from 14 to 29. Pauline continued, "Congrats on becoming a tier two adventurer."
Kalin's already large smile just got wider and he seemed to glow from happiness. The scene would have been even more adorable and innocent if his hands, which were hidden beneath her skirt, weren't currently exploring the softness of Yami's butt. After she handed the guild cards back to Artemis, they said their farewells with Pauline, who saw them leave with a smile on her face.
Walking out of the guild, Artemis had a troubled look on her face. Although she was grateful that Kalin had decided to team up with her yesterday, the invitation to party together was still something that was out of character for her that she asked in the heat of the moment. Although Kalin and his companions treated the both of them well, they were still practically strangers. Although she wouldn't mind getting closer to Kalin, as he seemed to be cute, polite, and strong, though maybe a little naïve, but they had just met. She already felt indebted to him for helping them with their financial situation.
As they were walking in silence, Artemis finally decided to ask, "How do we plan to split the earnings." Feeling a little embarrassed she continued' "I know that Yami and I held you back today. I just hope that you're willing to give us half of the reward."
"Half?" asked Kalin bewildered, looking at the confusion on his face made her heart drop before she heard the rest of him continue. "Of course we'll be splitting it evenly three ways. I was going to wait until we sold the eyes to see if we could get an even split, but we can divide it now it you want."
At a loss for words, Artemis just stood there with her mouth open. After snapping it shut, she insisted, "No, you would have been able to do that many by yourself. I could tell that you're still not that tired, even though you've been carrying Yami since we left the forest. If it weren't for us, you would have been able to keep hunting."
"It doesn't matter," he countered, "we are a team."
They stood there in silence until tears started streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, it's just been so hard the past few weeks. We've had to sell the rest of our clothes just to afford a place to stay. If we sold anything of the charms we're wearing, we'd be unable to use any of our magic, making us completely useless. Can we really have this money? I feel like I've just been taking advantage of you ever since we met. We haven't even known each other for a full day, yet you're being so kind to us."
Yami woke up from hearing her sister, and dismounted Kalin and gave her sister a hug. Going along with the flow, Kalin decided to hug her as well, causing quite the spectacle in front of the guild building. Feeling the comforting arms of her sister and new companion, her tears eventually ran dry, leaving her surprisingly refreshed. All the stress that had accumulated over the past month away from home, trying to be strong and take care of her older sister, all the money problems, and even her worries about when they could have their next meal seemed to wash away with her tears. Artemis looked around and was relieved that they finished early. There weren't that many people near the guild to observe her 'shameful' behavior.
After she rubbed her puffy eyes, she noticed Yami looking into her eyes with tears of her own, "I'm sorry I'm dumb and a bad big sister. Don't cry, it's my fault. If I was smart you wouldn't have to take care of me. I can go back home, just don't be sad."
Hearing her usually silent sister's words caused guilt to squeeze her heart. She felt like a fool for feeling like her lovable sister was ever a burden. Although she wasn't a scholar, she was the kindest and happiest person she knew. Even though she spent most of the time absent-minded, her sister was actually strangely keen and aware of her surroundings, having a strange ability to judge the character of a person upon meeting them. Artemis now felt it was probably no coincident that Yami disappeared in the market yesterday. Perhaps she was looking for someone to help their situation in her own way.
After the roles reversed and Artemis comforted Yami, she said, "Don't you think about leaving me. I couldn't explore the world without my best friend."
