27 Chapter 27: Crossroads

Wilhelm disregarded his much-needed sleep and continuously dug at the ground with his dagger. It didn't matter how much time passed, the ditch would only get deeper, and no other creatures dared to trespass in the spiders' domain. The massive amount of blood and innards was a grim reminder to the lurkers that something dangerous was present.

The fact that Wilhelm was severely injured didn't matter in the slightest; the other creatures were far too hesitant to approach. The giant spider had defended its position within the dungeon for a long while, and it's presence had long been respected by the other monsters. Naturally, If another creature killed it, then said creature would rightfully take the spiders place as the next guardian.

Unfortunately, however, Wilhelm was unable to appreciate his new position. The determination he had shown in the past gradually faded the more he dug, losing all form of purpose. It was similar to cleaning an absolutely filthy house, but you weren't the one who made it dirty. Not only would it be rage inducing, but also, you would constantly question the integrity of the world.

Such thoughts and sentiments were corroding Wilhelm's mind as he begrudgingly uncovered the gravel. It wasn't until the next day, twenty-four hours later, that the hole was just barely bulky enough for the spider to enter. Bags had formed under Wilhelm's eyes, and his thin lips were deathly chapped.

It was a burial fit for hundreds of standard bodies, yet Wilhelm completed it within one day. His body was exhausted, and now he was forced to drag the decaying eight-legged corpse into the grave. Unlike the ants he had tugged previously, its weight was undoubtedly much more abundant.

There wasn't even enough time to inspect his new attributes, even though he possessed no magic spells. He heaved one of the eight legs over his shoulder and stood there with an absent look. The excessive weight caused his feet to become deeply embedded into the ground, and his joints creaked painfully.

The absence of sleep weakened his already injured condition, but since the ground was wet with blood, the spider was a tad bit easier to slide across the ground. He grunted painfully as the huge corpse was pulled across the ground. Such a scene would be miraculous back on earth, but Wilhelm didn't have time to admire his superb strength; his skin on his right shoulder was slowly serrating.

Blood fell from his upper body and dripped down his back, falling to the ground. His skin was weaker than usual due to the lack of nutrition. However, he still managed to hurl the enormous spider into the considerably large hole. Furthermore, there was enough room for the other dozen or so beasts that he had killed prior.

After carrying the fatass spider, the other monsters felt like feathers. They were easily thrown into the ground, resulting in a half-way finished burial. The huge lumps of debris and sand at the side were then pushed into the grave, successfully covering up the carcasses.

It wasn't until he fell on his behind and gasped for breath that the system notifications finally rang in his ear. His eyes glittered expectantly as he paid close attention to the robotic voice, forgetting even to breathe.

[Minor Arachnid has been successfully buried, 1000 experience rewarded]

[Group of hybrid monsters has been successfully buried, 750 experience rewarded]

[35 burial points have been rewarded for burying a minor creature]

[15 burial points have been rewarded for burying fifteen lesser creatures]

Wilhelm breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed onto the ground, right then and there. He was very close to breaking the burial limit, and he was also getting closer to level up. Albeit, every time he gained a level, it required much more experience for the subsequent tiers.

Like this, he peacefully drifted off to sleep. There was not a single nearby beast that dared to creep into Wilhelm's new lair, nor were there any strong monsters present. The dark cave was unusually quiet, and the blood on the ground reflected a small gleam from the roof. A small crack was present, and a nearly inconspicuous eye could be seen looking down at the room. It belonged to no human and was only capable of peering inside the cavern due to the spider wrecking havoc previously.

It observed Wilhelm with unmatched curiosity, not adverting its gaze for the entire night. It had a yellow pupil and appeared to be a reptilian-like race as there was a slit in the middle of its eye. The sheer size of it was worth noting, but it did not appear to be aggressive, only spectating during the night.

It wasn't until the next morning, after Wilhelm had slept for a good portion of the day, that the eye adverted its gaze, moving back into its lair. The dust in the dome-like room had just about settled, and the blood was beginning to dry up, entirely.

It took a few moments for Wilhelm to realize where he was, to which he carefully scrutinized his surroundings. The tunnel which had been behind the spider was covered up by some thick rocks, and the pathway behind him was closed off by even more. The aftermath proved to be worse than Wilhelm had initially thought, leaving him with only a few possible options.

He sat up and crossed his legs, stroking his mighty beard in the process. His hair was nearly entirely black at this point, regardless of the white strands of hair, but he wasn't yet aware of such a change. Instead, he was much more worried about a separate issue—where in the would he acquire water.

If he returned for whence he came, then it would take at least a day or so to uncover the huge rocks. In contrast, if he moved forward, he could leave the dome-like area in a matter of a few hours. He hadn't drunken anything for an entire day, and now he was forced to chose two separate paths for survival.

Using common sense, it was only natural that there was a water source up ahead. How else would the monsters above even live? The main issue was distance, and if any creatures happened to make the body of water their territory.

Wilhelm contemplated for another few moments, resolving himself after around a minute of deliberation. He was far too lazy to travel backward, so he was going in for broke. He cracked his neck and stretched his limbs, heading for the front entrance.
