Yi Lan stood casually, leaning against the wall, seeing the scene in front of her without a care. Her eyes took in the sobbing state of the bride, the horror stricken faces of the mob and the pale faces of the bride's family.
A girl retched as the blood stench grew too much for her and Lan wrinkled her nose. A crack drew everyone's attention to the previously sobbing bride, who now had bloodshot eyes. Her breath came out in short huffs and she looked at everyone with a hostile stare.
In her hand was a snapped bone, that had belonged to none other than her dead future husband.
Yi Lan raised a brow in surprise. Anger was evident when a human lost their love, sometimes, even to the point of madness. But Lan could tell this madness was different. The bride's hands and legs trembled and just for a moment, she had made a face that showed reluctance.
Lan quickly recollected the books she had learnt, and gathered some information. Eyes being bloodshot, hands and legs trembling, moves that signified reluctance, all were signs of possession.
Which meant that currently the bride was possessed.
Lan's eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at the angry bride in front of her.
A twisted smile spread across the bride's face as she gazed back. It was as if she could tell Yi Lan had figured it all out.
Slowly, she stood up and walked upto her mother. Her mother hurriedly moved to embrace her daughter, thinking she was broken hearted.
Before Yi Lan could even utter a warning, a shrill scream escaped the mother's mouth, running a chill down everyone's spine.
A bloody hand protruded from the mother's back. It held a small, beating heart in it's fingers.
The heart was so red and fragile that it seemed like it would burst with just a clench of hand. And that's what happened.
The hand closed its fingers around the heart and applied pressure, making it burst into small pieces, releasing a nauseating smell. Even Yi Lan cringed at the sight.
The hand was the bride's. One of her eyes remained bloodshot while the other shed a tear, and was wide with grief. A scream tore out of her throat, "NO!". It echoed through the whole house and everyone scrambled back.
Yi Lan let out a breath and assumed a fighting pose. Hands in front of her, those violet eyes were vigilant.
The chances of escaping were low.
According to what Yi Lan had learnt, the vengeful spirit only consumed those with a bitter hatred or sadness in themselves. Who better than a broken hearted bride can be of use?
Yi Lan took out a knife that had been held by a stitch inside her clothes. The knife was no ordinary one. It was forged with the best metal and an intricate design was carved on it.
In the worst case, Yi Lan might have to kill the bride. A vengeful spirit can die as long as they are in a vessel. Otherwise, they lurk around everywhere, having no place to go to, no place to live either.
Vengeful spirits were usually gotten rid by exorcism, but by the looks of it, no one in the mob is a exorcist.
Neither was Yi Lan.
That's why, she chose to drive away the spirit, rather than killing it. But what the bride did was unexpected. Instead of using the sword she had, she tore off her limb and threw it on one of the people.
At first, the limb seemed normal. And then, it happened. With a 'pop' came out two wriggling eyes and a mouth with a slobbering tongue.
It let out a laugh and latched itself on the person's chest. A 'crunch' was heard clearly as the person's head disappeared in a bite. To everyone's horror, the limb split into two parts and another similar monster latched onto a person.
All the people there were no soldiers. They hadn't been trained to use Qi and their powers only surfaced in times of need.
Yi Lan's eyes grew serious.
She had just seen a boy slash at the limb, but the limb only backed down for a second. It soon healed and was back to business.
'It has a very high regenerating speed. A speed that almost makes its healing invisible to normal human eye. It's like a miniature version of zombies.'
She quietly straightened up. For some reason, none of the zombie hands were approaching her. 'Do I have something on me that keeps me safe?' Yi Lan couldn't help but wonder.
That's when Yi Lan noticed her jasmine clip glowing eerily, its light calming, but at the same time managing to keep away the hands.
Yi Lan's breath hitched. She was reminded of her younger brother, because of whom she was alive at the moment.
"Yoru...." She whispered, touching the clip. "Very well, I'll make use of your gift and help them."
A determined look covered her face as she once again clenched her knife. In a flash, she made Qi flow through her arm and reach the knife. A brilliant light covered the knife and the zombie hands screamed.
Like a dancer, Yi Lan leapt across the floor, burning down many arms with her Qi. None of them were able to come near her anyway, so she was safe.
A foreboding feeling rose up in Yi Lan and she glanced back, her sixth senses tingling.
Breathing down on her neck, was the drooling bride. Her red clothes were now soaked with the blood of her family. The previously beautiful face, turned pale white. Lips were chapped and her tongue continously darted out to lick them.
A few of the zombie hands were stuck on her back, like a fairy has her wings. But these zombie hands automatically fled away, as their flesh corroded on coming in contact with Yi Lan's clip's light.
For some reason, the bride wasn't affected.
At this moment, a blood covered hand was nearing Yi Lan's chest, ready to capture her heart and smash it into pieces.
