24 Valedictorian
Grandma Adrian smiled at this and gave one reply that left them all speechless "ME!!!" Charlie could not hold his tongue any longer and exclaim in shock "You, as the face of the company? Do you think the customers are going to be old blind people? Who would buy anything with your face on it? Please." Charlie scoffed rolling his eyes at Grandma Adrian.
They all started laughing at this with the exception of Grandma Adrian "I will have you know if Jennifer...." Everyone interrupted her and continued for her "If Jennifer Matori and I were placed together, I would be mistaken as her sister. I am not old at all" Grandma Adrian sneered at this "It is good that you all know then, now shoo" she said feigning annoyance.
It was not long after that the ceremony began. The formalities were said and the ceremony began properly. Halfway through the Valedictorian was called to receive her gift from an important guest in their midst. Standing up Annabelle made her way confidently to the Podium. Samantha, Samuel, and Charlie were really happy for her and grinned from ear to ear like proud parents.
The MC said after Annabelle had gotten to the stage, "Please, help me all in welcoming our special guest of honor, Mr. Lester Stuart Alexander, CEO of Alexander corporations and the biggest sponsor for today's event to present the gift prepared for our Valedictorian, Miss Annabelle Horton". The audience broke into pandemonium. The CEO of Alexander corporations was available to present Annabelle with her gift. Some girls were really envious of her.
The applause grew louder as Lester stepped onto the stage in his brand new suit and shoes. He walked like he was royalty with an air of arrogance that could only go well with someone of his charisma. As Annabelle raised her head to smile at the man that was called upon, she was shocked. What was that weird ma doing here and how come he is the CEO of Alexander corporations.
Remembering her conversations with him where she had asked for directions months ago she felt really stupid. Lester noticed all her fleeting emotions and just smiled. He had received a call earlier that day as their special guest, after learning he was going to be presenting Annabelle with her gifts, he readily agreed.
The gift presentations aspect was soon over and in no time it was finally right for Annabelle to give her speech. Walking up to the Podium again, she took the microphone that was handed to her and did some breathing exercise to calm her mind. Lester was watching her intently, he was really proud of her. Standing there on that day in front of so many people and excelling in her studies with everything life had thrown at her was not an easy task for anyone.
Annabelle began her speech after she took a deep sigh, "It was so important for me to lose everything because I found out what the most important thing is, is to be true to yourself. Ultimately, that's what's gotten me to this place. I don't live in fear, I'm free; I have no secrets and I know I'll always be OK because no matter what, I know who I am." she took a pause and continued beautifully
"There's a difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice." She looked over at where her friends were "I really wouldn't do any justice if I don't mention my friends, my real friends Charlie, Samantha, Samuel and well Grandma Adrian. They have been such a blessing to me. I do hope you all can find just one true friend like these guys. I couldn't have done this without you. I love you guys"
Samantha, Samuel, and Charlie all screamed towards her "We love you too" Samantha wiped away the tears in her eyes. Grandma Adrian was grinning broadly where she was also wiping her tears. Perhaps it was the excitement but everyone started a round of applause and later it evolved into a standing ovation. Annabelle had only given a short speech but she was received with so much warmth she felt it was surreal. The applause continued until she got back to her friends. They all embraced her and Samantha was being as dramatic as ever.
After the ceremony finally ended the graduates went ahead to meet up with their families and this included the twins and Charlie. Annabelle tried her best to put on a smile as she looked around at all the families that were gathered in small groups. Lester saw Annabelle from where he was and he was not sure he knew how to approach her but after gathering his courage he took the bouquet of flower from his assistant and made his way towards her.
Annabelle was still feeling down when she saw a bouquet of beautiful flowers appear in front of her. She looked up in surprise and was surprised seeing who it was. Annabelle couldn't accept them and she felt it was awkward to reject the kind man. Lester noticed her hesitation and was starting to falter but instead, he smiled and racked his brains for what to say. He could not give up now.
"You don't have to feel awkward. I was quite impressed with your speech earlier and I noticed you were alone so I just decided to get these for you" Lester said waving the bouquet in his hand. Annabelle finally accepted it with a smile. Thanking the man, she was going to apologize for their last meeting when she heard Grandma Adrian
"Who said she was alone?" Grandma Adrian said. Looking in Grandma Adrian's direction she saw her friends were also with her. Grandma Adrian had gone to the restroom earlier and she was not at Annabelle's side after the ceremony. Charlie had dragged the twins from their family when he noticed Annabelle was speaking to the special guest that was invited.
Lester smiled seeing Grandma Adrian "How have you been Ma'am?" he replied with a question of his own. Grandma Adrian stared at him for a while before realization suddenly dawned on her. Her attitude took a total 180 degree once she recognized him. The change in attitude was not missed by the four of them present.
"We have not exactly thanked you for your help on that fateful day. Please, young man, I hope it is not too late to do so now?" Lester smiled at this he was still planning on answering when Charlie interrupted "What fateful day are you talking about, old woman?" Grandma Adrian gave him a disgusting look but didn't say anything to him.
"I am sorry about him, he has a loose lip and we have been trying to fix it," Grandma Adrian said all smiles as she turned back to Lester. "Hey! that is not fair oldie" Charlie shouted in annoyance. Lester being the magnanimous person he was, well he was only magnanimous after seeing the way Grandma Adrian treated Charlie. He opened his mouth gracefully "It is all good ma'am"
