11 Annabelle Horton

Annabelle walked out of the hotel hall without informing anyone about her departure, her steps queasy as she made her way outside of the hotel. She walked aimlessly for a while before arriving in front of an old neighborhood.

The house there were being destroyed as it was now part of a government project. She walked a bit more ignoring the sharp pains in her legs from walking in high heels for almost two hours. Stopping in front of a dilapidated building with the board almost falling off the wall.

The name 'Horton' could be seen on what looked like a plaque. She had not cried in a while even after she lost her parents and brothers but for some reasons today she could not stop the tears.

Everything began 15 years ago she was only about 6 years then. But she could never forget that day which was the day they lost everything. Her father was the owner of a small scale company and he had just taken a risk in the hope of making the company bigger but who knew that the investment was going to fail.

Overnight everything they had turned to nothing, her mother was a seamstress but after her marriage to her father, she became a full-time housewife and unfortunately for them she had just put to bed increasing their expenses drastically.

That day, Annabelle and her three brothers were gathered around the new baby. Annabelle was especially happy because the baby was a girl. She had long wanted a sister and she was so happy that day that she promised to teach the little girl everything she knew.

This had earned a bout of laughter from her elder brothers who were making fun of her for her silly behavior. They waited for their father for dinner which was a normal practice in the family. Seeing as her husband was taking too long Mrs. Horton encouraged her children to eat and go to bed, promising to wake them up as soon as their father returned.

Her mother had sat there for almost two hours when the sound of the door being unlocked was heard. Mrs, Horton jumped up with joy and made her way to her husband only to discover he was dead drunk. She was surprised and quickly ran up to support him.

Annabelle, who was a light sleeper was awakened by a noise in the sitting room and made her way there because she was sure her father had arrived. In her ecstasy, she forgot to wear her slippers and was planning to question her father for his lateness.

Annabelle was still upstairs when she heard her father's voice, she could not make out what he was saying but she decided to tiptoe and surprise him. When she got to the sitting room the person that was surprised, no shocked was her. She had to witness the scene where her father had kicked her mother, sending her flying across the room. For some reason, she stood rooted to the ground and could not make a single word or even a sound from her mouth.

Looking at her father in shock and then to her mother she ran up the stairs immediately to wake her older brothers. She was not used to knocking and hence barged into one of their rooms. Luckily for her, they were all staying together that particular night making it easier to wake them all up.

Her eldest brother was the first to awaken and seeing her in her flustered state got worried, waking the other two. "Bella, sweetheart what is wrong with you? Why are you shaking? Did something frighten you?" he asked her questions after questions to which she shook her head continuously.

Her brothers were frustrated and wanted to go back to sleep, seeing that they may actually ignore her she decided to speak up "Help, mommy" she said incoherently but her brothers were used to her way of speech by now and immediately understood her. "Where?" one of them asked. She dragged the one that spoke and the remaining followed hurriedly. When they got to the sitting room they noticed their father beating up their mother and even with that she did not make a sound for fear of waking up her kids. Little did she know they were already awake.

This time around Annabelle could not help but scream alerting her father to their presence. She was so scared that her body was shaking visibly. When the father heard her scream, he stopped his beatings but ever since that day. He would beat up one of the kids including their mother. She was the only one lucky enough to not be beaten because her brothers would always protect her.

They sold their house later on moving into a small apartment in an old neighborhood, her brothers had to drop out of school to allow for her and the baby to have enough. Her mother tried looking for work again but no one would hire her, the first son luckily got a job soon after but once he collected his paycheck her father who had turned to a squanderer would beat him up and force him into giving him the money.

The money was not even used to take care of the family but instead spent in brothels or any other addictions he got himself into. Annabelle was tutored by her brothers from time to time and seeing all their hard work she decided to be better. She was well developed and luckily got a scholarship at one of the best schools in the city which was a relief to her mother and brothers.

Her father never cared about the family again after the loss of his company. Annabelle was away when her little sister developed a complication, she was sent to the hospital but they could not even afford the bills. They tried calling their father but he was not reachable. Annabelle got the news from one of her brothers later and was heartbroken but none of them told her her little sister had died, due to lack of money, they only said she was still in the hospital because she was sick.

Some days later her father finally arrived. Her mother had confronted her father that day which led to another round of beating. Annabelle had gone to school earlier on a particular school day because she did not want to see her mother being beaten up by her father again. On getting to school she did not see a bunch of girls along her way and bumped into them, knocking one of them down. She apologized frantically but her apologies fell on deaf ears as the girls started insulting her.

When she noticed the girls had no plans of stopping their insults she decided to ignore them and walk away. Seeing this the girls were infuriated as they were all spoilt princess of their family. "Hey! are you blind can't you see you bumped into Grace causing her to fall," one of them asked. The remaining glared at her. "Girls, it is okay I really can't blame her for having a wretched father," the one called Grace said, the other girls laughed at her mockingly.

Annabelle continued on her way ignoring their snide remarks, 'they were not lying anyway', she thought to herself. "I really can't believe a father would let his own child die, just because he is too poor to pay for the hospital fees," Another one said in a higher voice so Annabelle could hear her and unfortunately Annabelle did. They were still gloating as Annabelle made her way to where they were "What did you say, I don't think I heard you properly" perhaps they were too dumb to even notice the fire in her eyes one of them proudly answered "If you can lick my shoe, I might give even give you the piece of change that was required to save your little sister's life"

The girl brought out a few notes from her purse and handed it to her, the rest did the same. Seeing as she was collecting the money rather calmly they could not help but mock her. When they were done Annabelle counted the money in her hands and smiled, seeing this the girls thought they had worn and turned sideways to make fun of her. After she had counted the money she suddenly said "But this isn't still enough" they were all shocked and looked at her with their mouths wide open.

Grace looked at her mockingly and asked "How much more do you need?" she asked as she brought out the supplementary purse she usually carries. "Grace you are too generous" one of the girls piqued. Grace just smiled as she pulled a check out of her purse. She handed to Annabelle and asked, "Is that enough?" "Well it should be enough for 5 people," Annabelle said.

They all thought she was referring to her brothers, her mother and herself but when they saw still standing they were prepared to ask her questions when suddenly one of them screamed out in pain, followed by another until the five of them were all in pain, bleeding profusely
