21 Chapter 20: What's my occupation?
During my time training, I came across a conundrum.
Even though the stat system doesn't exist, the technology of Guilds and Guild ID still exists.
Each individuals occupation could be found out by that.
For future generations, this technology will turn out to be obsolete, but for now it still has its uses.
It could easily ID anyone, and find out their job and their affinities.
What'd happen if it IDs me?
They'll see that my Name is Monty Cristo and that I have no occupation. Then maybe it'll be easy for them to recognise that I have no occupation because I forsook my occupation. Then they'll connect the dots that I'm the Hero.
*/ Author's note:
For future reference, the lines between occupation and Character Class is very blur in this world.
Though the stat system doesn't exist anymore, it's sorta getting phased out and not completely gone yet...
the ability dependence will be removed gradually while the factors such as HP which could mean an actual difference of Level between people are already gone...
Abilities are gonna become a part of the people...not some thing like an external thing that gets activated when you say "Fireball!" or "Water ball!" ....
I do hope you get my point /*
So I had two options in front of me..
One.. create a fake ID.
I quit on this one early. Anissa told me that this was attempted often and that the Guild had methods by which they could see through this.
Two.. get a new occupation.
This was the reason that I trained 3 years with Anissa for. I trained to fight and temper myself and hopefully all my training would get me an occupation that would suit me.
I didn't use any weapons during my training and relied solely on my body. It's not that I disliked weapons, but thanks to [Fortify], my body was essentially the only weapon I needed.
My body had a large amount of magic power and no magic affinity, so the idea to train in magic and gain a corresponding occupation was put on hold.
Due to all my bare fisted training, Anissa expected my to get the occupation of Pulgist. But after my prolonged training, the occupation I got wasn't Pulgist.
It was a rarer one. It had only been seen a few times in this world and frankly that thought surprised me.
My occupation was Martial Artist.
It was a rare occupation that would pop up once a few centuries. And the only ones who ever had that occupation were all humans.
That was public knowledge.
What was classified information, which Anissa had learnt from her experiences was that, all known Martial artists were all companions of Heroes, who picked up their fighting style and got the Martial Artist occupation.
Which means I'm rarer than common people, but not as common as Heroes.
Most Marquises would pay a lot for someone with my occupation to teach their soldiers.
That solved my occupation problem and gave me an employment option as well.
Another thing I noticed was that [Fortify] would probably give my identity away. It would be super rare to see someone who doesn't get hurt by anything and that would raise a lot of questions.
So during my final year of training, I trained to switch off my [Fortify] and get attuned to feeling the fear of approaching attacks. I trained to take a beating, to bleed and further develop my fighting skills for the occasion of fighting with my [Fortify] off.
It was after I completed this, that I got the occupation of Martial Artist.
You might think, about why I got an occupation related to fighting when I had previously discarded my identity as a Hero and tried to stay as far away as possible from combat.
After learning a lot more about this world, I realized that as I am now, unless I want to reveal my identity to the world, there is no option for me to completely stay away from combat. Somehow someway, people will sometimes get involved in a situation involving combat.
I'm currently in the Sky Wall continent. It's the second largest continent of this world and it's about the size of Russia alone.
It got its name from a mountain range that surrounds the continent, which is as tall as the clouds itself.
In this continent, formerly The Normidan Empire used to exist, alongside the Kingdom of the Elves and a country with ties to the Temple of Elements. Now only the country of Elements remains as a powerhouse while the Elves remain hidden in their own lands and the Normidan Empire has been gone for Millennia.
I was heading to the country under the control of the Temple of Elements, known as Aquenos. Supposedly, the adventurers guild had a massive amount of influence among the global powers and they remained completely neutral. Each country had a branch in their major towns and cities and they remain the largest connected network of enterprises in this world.
For now, I was going the cliche way, and will try to register in the adventurers guild and work my way up to an influential position as a great adventurer.
This was my plan initially, but the way it turned out was even better than I hoped.
After a gruelling journey across a goddamn desert, battling all manner of beasts and my puking nemesis, The Sand Wyrm...
after that 950 Kilometer walk, I finally, after a month in the desert, reached the nearest settlement. The town of Giradat.
I was so bored with my journey, that when I first caught sight of the city, I ran as fast as I could, screaming "Fuck Yea!!!"
