63 A Pure Angel

When the car door opened, a young girl below ten years of age stepped out. A smartly dressed old man held the girl's hand and led her over to the others, who had descended the steps at the front of the house to meet the girl.

The moment they laid eyes on the girl, they gasped in shock. Obviously, she appeared tired from the ordeal. Her edges of her eyes were dyed a deep red, evidence of the tears she had shed.

However, that wasn't what made them gasp. Their shock had come from the girl's otherworldly… beauty? Pureness? Innocence? It was like an angel was before them. This beautiful, innocent child possessed a purity unmatched by any other.

Her appearance only added to the pain they felt on her behalf. For such an innocent thing to be put through so much agony… whoever was responsible would surely pay a hefty price.

"Hello, you must be Ms. Gilen," greeted the old man, the family's attorney.

"Yes, I am," she replied succinctly. Then she turned to the young girl and said, "Hello, my name's Veronica, but you can call me any variation you like. Some call me Ver, some call me Roni, I even get called Nica occasionally. What's your name?"

With her warmest smile, she introduced herself to the young girl, but she didn't want to talk, keeping her silence.

The attorney cough to break the silence and said, "She's been through a lot as you can imagine, so she's become quite withdrawn and rarely speaks."

Veronica didn't look up as the attorney spoke, maintaining eye contact with the young girl.

"That's fine," Veronica said with a smile. "We can wait until you're ready to talk. After all, we're family, so we're here for you."

At the mention of the word 'family', the girl started crying.

Veronica started panicking. "Ah, no, no, I'm sorry, I should've been more sensitive."

As the attorney hugged the little girl to calm her down, he said to Veronica, "Unfortunately, I've seen more than my fair share of cases like this. There's nothing you can do to avoid moments like this. Once you earn the child's trust, all you can do is give them a hug when they need it."

The attorney settled the girl down before heading out.

Before he left he gave Veronica some more information. "You seem to be very kind-hearted, so I doubt anything will happen. Just remember, as of tomorrow, you will be this girl's legal guardian, irrespective of if you are blood relatives or not. I hope you are ready for this responsibility.

"Obviously, your checks all came back clean, otherwise we wouldn't be letting you take care of her, but to ensure you are looking after properly, there will be an inspection in a few weeks' time.

"Oh yes, she has a habit of making noises instead of talking sometimes, it's usually an affirmative."

"What kind of noises?" Veronica asked curiously.

"Goo!" the attorney replied. "Please take good care of Maggie, we don't want her to suffer anymore."

"Don't worry," Veronica replied earnestly, "nothing will happen to her."
