9 Chapter 8

A/N : I'm late not because I was playing the Dreams of Desire again.

"Why did you save me Oliver?" Emily implored Oliver with her eyes to answer her question.

"There is a very simple reason. We were happily married in the future. Due to some unknown cause I was sent back into time. So, when I saw you there, I was like this is a good chance to earn some brownie points with my future waifu."

Emily didn't know whether to get angry over Oliver for telling such an obvious lie or praise his Oscar level acting skills. The longer she looked into those tired but happy deep blue eyes the more she felt that he was telling the truth. But she could still see the small twinkle of mischievousness hiding by his lips which inclined her not to believe him.

Emily gave a deep sigh and muttered, "If you don't want to tell me then don't tell me. Do you think that I am a stupid person who would believe such an impossible thing?"

'But most of what I said was true.'

"Haha, you got me. Well, the real reason is kinda personal. But since it is you, I can talk a little bit about it."

Oliver took a bite of his turkey bacon club and continued speaking.

"I didn't like the look in your eyes. That look of betrayal and despair...You know, my parents got divorced when I was just 11 years old. Apparently, my father had been cheating on my mother for over a year. After the divorce my mom wasn't the same again. Whenever I was there, she would always act like everything was all right. She was very good at hiding her emotions too. I guess it came with being a lawyer for over 8 years. But I could always feel the sadness lurking beneath her eyes. She is a strong and confident woman, but I guess she loved my father too much. I even heard her crying in the bathroom whenever she thought that I was asleep.....All a kid like me do was hold her to sleep and hope she would feel a little better the next day. Oh! I almost got sidetracked."

Oliver took a sip of the coffee and continued, "Anyways, the main reason is that I have sufficient means and resources to help you. As for my motive, I won't be able to sleep if I don't help someone with those eyes. I do expect for you to pay me back in the future though, so feel free to ask for any help you may need."

'Thanks for the hard work Grace. Remind me about this matter in the evening.'

Emily had been silently staring at her own sandwich while lightly playing with straw in her hand.

"So, you helped me because of pity?"

Oliver stopped eating for a second and looked at Emily like he was looking at the most stupid thing in his life. He gave a shrug and replied, "Honestly I don't even know how you reached that conclusion. I do have sympathy for you. But I don't pity you. I only helped you because I know I can gain more in return. In simple terms think of it as an investment. Now I can only cross my fingers and hope that it was a good decision on my part."

Frankly, Oliver was just okay with Emily trying her best to live her life. He didn't care whether she succeeded or not. As long as he was there, he would make sure that the end result would be success. But he didn't want her to become dependent on him or anything dramatic like that. He just wanted her to be the confident, happy, and hardworking like she was before yesterday's evening.

Oliver quickly finished his food because he wasn't a great fan of playing Q&A so early in the morning.

"Let's go when you have finished."

Emily looked up to see Oliver carefully folding the sandwich wrapper and his used napkin. She also increased her pace of eating and was done shortly.

"It is so early in the morning that most shops won't be open right now. I do have to go somewhere for a bit, and we can go to the shops after that. Is that okay with you?"

Emily was in her own world after the realization had struck her that she had been questioning her savior, in a very rude manner, so early in the morning. She was feeling so embarrassed that the tips of her ears were completely red.

She managed to muster an unsure nod before going back to being embarrassed in her own world.

'Is he angry with me? Maybe he hates me now? Oh, what should I do? Maybe I should apologize to him. But he is such a nice person, so maybe he isn't angry. And if I apologize out of nowhere won't that he feel like I am a stupid girl? Ahhh…'

Although Oliver had the opportunity to go back in time but even that wasn't enough to make him completely understand the mind of a woman. So, obviously he didn't notice the intense struggle going inside certain someone's mind.

His slightly impatient attitude due to the early morning questions along with his care for Emily made a very good recipe for a nice hot serving of a bittersweet misunderstanding.

After driving for more than half an hour Emily realized that they had moved into a slightly richer neighborhood. The car quickly pulled into the driveway of a mid-sized bungalow.

There was space for four cars in the garage in his mom's house. But his mom wasn't much into cars, she had only one SUV, a BMW X5M Typhoon for all her needs, unlike most other rich people. So, imagine his surprise when he found two Rolls-Royce Ghost and an Audi Avus Quattro blocking all the space.

Although he was a bit surprised, but Oliver got over it quickly. He reasoned that it must be one of those filthy rich clients of his mother.

"Emily lets go."

Oliver noted that Emily was still acting shy. But he didn't know that the reason was completely different.

Although Emily didn't own a car but that didn't mean that she was devoid of common sense. She could clearly recognize the logos of all three famous car companies. That's why she was hesitant to walk into such a house while wearing just some old t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

'Why is Oliver acting like this place is his own backyard. He is wearing such a faded red t-shirt in an upscale place like this. What if he embarrasses himself? But he looks awfully comfortable. Ahhh….I will just go with him and share the shame. It will surely be less shameful if there is someone else experiencing it with you.'

While walking past the cars Oliver realized that the drivers of the Rolls-Royce were still sitting in their cars. Oliver could clearly feel the discipline found only in highly trained soldiers.

'Hmmm, a really rich person. Such highly trained people are working as drivers for him. If he has a good relationship with mother maybe I can ask for some help or cooperation. If not, well no sense in leaving such a strong enemy alive.'

Oliver started muttering a happy tune as he walked into the house. Two people were standing guard at the door. Although a bit more surprised due to such pomp and show Oliver didn't even bother to acknowledge them. It wasn't because he was an arrogant son of a bitch. In fact, he had firsthand experience of guarding goods, and he knew how annoying it was when strangers start talking out of nowhere.

Although Oliver didn't want to trouble them, it seemed the feelings weren't mutual.

"Stop. No one can enter the house right now."

Oliver thought that they might not know him, so he politely explained, "This is my mother's house."

The guards didn't budge at all. "We can't let anyone enter without our master's permission."

Oliver mouth had started twitching like crazy, but he still tried one last time. "Is your master Lena Hanover? She is my mother."

The guards didn't appreciate the last chance. Both of them pulled out their pistols from their waist and warned Oliver in a menacing manner, "No one goes inside alive."

*Sigh* 'Grace check who is the owner of the Audi using the license plate. Seems someone is a need of face slapping.'

>

Emily lightly tugged Oliver's t-shirt. Oliver gave her a questioning look. She softly whispered in his ear, "I think we should get out of here. They seem like bad people."

Oliver quickly realized her concern and softly patted her head.

"Don't worry. They are just some useless fools."

With that he almost disappeared from Emily's view. Oliver had rushed at the two guards with a speed so fast that an average human could only see a dark blur of motion. He grabbed the head of the stupid fellows and smashed them together into unconsciousness. Fortunately, he didn't use all his strength or there would be blood and grey matter everywhere on the front porch of his mother's house. Oliver was a young adult and he really didn't want to have a long and painful lecture session with his mother, especially in front of Emily.

>

'Thanks Grace.'

Oliver started humming a happy tune as he entered his house.

'Seems like I will get my first subordinate very soon.'

Emily looked at Oliver's back with a complex look.

'I have entered waters too deep for a normal homeless girl like me...'
