323 Safe Travels

Gu Jun ran all the way back to the morgue. When he arrived, Uncle Dan and Xiao Huiwen had left. Cai Zixuan was cleaning up the autopsy table while Wu Siyu slumped lazily on the couch. Gu Jun rushed forward to shake her shoulders. "Siyu, Siyu, wake up!" Jostled by the man, Wu Siyu's bleary eyes opened.

"Gave me quite a shock there for you have slumbered so deeply." Gu Jun sat down beside her as he gave a breath of relief. He studied Wu Siyu for a while before turning to Deng Ximei who was also still at the morgue.

"What is it?" Wu Siyu's blurred mind was too confused. Soon her eyelids closed again. "O well."

Gu Jun's brows pleated. A conspiracy brewed in his mind… He continued to read Lydia's letter. Other than the Conqueror Worm, there was a short paragraph, "It's an honor to have met you. At this juncture, I do not have the time to waste on meaningless pleasantries, so I'll jump right into it. Can common humans do nothing but surrender themselves to the arrangement of the divine? Only the divine can master death? Let it end, let death end everything for death will be another new beginning."

What was the meaning of that? Gu Jun's head pounded as the forces of evil rebelled within him… Whether Lydia was a Carlot Doctor was unknown, but this was the woman's dying letter so every sentence had to carry significant meaning. Deng Ximei was seated on the adjacent couch. Gu Jun turned to pose her the question. If someone had written something like this before they died, what would be her opinion of it? Deng Ximei was silent for a while before answering, "A common man cannot control his birth but he can control his death. Death is the only certainty in the vicissitudes of life. Suicide is the only way for him to regain claim over his life."

Something dawned on Gu Jun. Deng Ximei herself did say that death could help her escape, she personally had been viewing suicide as a means of escape. Landon too had chosen suicide as a way out… Could this letter have influenced his decision? Perhaps it was not the main reason but it could be one of the factors… Was the meaning of the letter literal? Gu Jun did not think so but it did not look like it was part of a code either. Was suicide a veritable solution? How was death a new beginning?

Gu Jun levelled his eyes on Deng Ximei to reassess this person again. She was one year younger than he was. During the Spirit Children Project, it was the Son of Misfortune's arrival that brought Lydia over. This was not a coincidence… Son of Misfortune, Lydia, what was the connection between them… The more Gu Jun delved into it, the more he could feel the force of Son of Misfortune reacting to it. This intensified his anxiety.

Time, he was running out of time.

There were still only a few hours left to sunrise. Gu Jun decided to make a call to command central, "I wish to go visit Lou Sa Village and if we find nothing there, we'll proceed to Isla Salas Y Gomez. Please make all the necessary arrangements." Then, he leaned back against the couch and fell asleep next to Wu Siyu.

When he woke up, the sun was brightening. Gu Jun recovered somewhat from the quick nap. However, he still could not access Son of Steel's sweet dream and the Deep One's Language Mastery Textbook. At least he could confirm that it was not a lack of his mental power which was the problem but he was missing something else.

Lou Sa Village was a small village north to the factory where Tian Yi worked. There was nothing special about it. Before Gu Jun left the People's Hospital, he did another round to check on Xie Yiman's condition. This was probably his last visit for the foreseeable future. For this patient, Gu Jun had tried everything he could but the result lacked much to be desired. However, this was common for a clinical doctor, abnormal illness or otherwise.

"Yiman, we will arrange for you to undergo dermatomy and skin transplant." Gu Jun explained to Xie Yiman. The result from the test group was very satisfactory, the erythema did not return. Keratinization of Xie Yiman's skin worsened, making surgery necessary. Since he was going to be a mission and had no experience in this kind of surgery, the surgery would be handled by dermatology and plastic surgery experts. "After the skin transplant, they will perform plastic surgery. In the future, we can go to the Dreamlands for a better recuperation. So don't you worry about that."

"Okay…" Xie Yiman's face was still swollen and that prevented her from making any expressions. She had trouble even moving her lips. Therefore, her face was not reflective of her actual mood. The cloud of despair still hung over her but she had slowly accepted this cruel truth.

After a few more words of consolation, just as Gu Jun and his team was about to leave, Xie Yiman suddenly called out, "Doctor Gu and other doctors, thank you… You have done many things for me, and I am appreciative of that… I wish you good luck…"

"It's what we should have done." Gu Jun smiled at her. It was his responsibility because he had taken an oath. "We wish you good luck for your surgery too." The Deep One's carcass was transported back to the Spell Department base while Gu Jun's team departed for Luo Sa Village.

That afternoon, Gu Jun found himself walking down the dirty alley of Luo Sa Village. Cement rental apartments lined the street and they were rented cheaply to non-local residents. The sewer at the village showed signs of disrepair as the stink clouded the roads. It mingled with the refuse of the livestock like chickens, and ducks.

Gu Jun's itinerary brought him to Tian Yi's rental, Doctor Liang's clinic, Tian Yi's former hostel and her place of employment. He came up with nothing. The sense of agitation was the strongest when he stood by the river where she was last seen. The investigation department believed that she was taken around this river and the river entered the Pacific Ocean after another 100 km. The investigation department had checked the records for any passing ships on the day of Tian Yi's disappearance but if it was the Deep Ones who had taken her, they would not have left any official records.

'The ocean?' Gu Jun contemplated. 'If it was really the Deep Ones who kidnapped Tian Yi to the ocean, where would they bring her next?'

That afternoon, they took a private plane to head towards Easter Island in the North Pacific Ocean. The team consisted of Gu Jun, Wu Siyu, Deng Ximei, Uncle Dan, Lou Xiaoning and the land's travellers. They were all elites. This mission was going to be an international joint effort. When they arrived, they would meet up with people from FBM before they departed for Isla Salas Y Gomez together.

"Hopefully we'll return before the Mid Autumn festival." Gu Jun lamented as he looked out at the sea and clouds outside the window. The festival was in a few days.

"There was a sale that day, I've already purchased presents for everyone." Wu Siyu beside him added, "The present will be delivered on the day itself."

"What did you buy me?" Gu Jun looked at her with some anticipation. The man had not received any gifts for the past few years.

"Huh, where's the surprise if I tell you now?" Wu Siyu pouted slightly. "Of course, there's mooncake… and well, you'll know the rest when we return."
