22 Registration
"I think i can do that." Harry said with confidence, ready to change his way of thinking and how he goes about things.
Done with their discussion, they continued on their way to the registration point, reaching it within the next few minutes.
The buildings and road had ended at one point and opened up to a huge open space paved with the same material as the sidewalk.
The open space had a huge wall that curved around and joined together with a straight wall that was the border of the city.
From above, the two interconnected walls would look like a thick horizontal line that had a thick hollow semi-circle on the underside of it.
The semi-circle wall seems to have twenty small entrances all around it, only big enough for one or two people to go through at one time.
The huge open space wasn't empty and was absolutely filled with people surrounding the walls, being especially packed around each entrance.
There were also people flying in air, passing over the huge mass of people to get to an entrance, each entrance seemed to hold a lot of activity as not only was the front of each them blocked by a huge lf people trying to get into it
The air space was hectic as well as people were pushing and shoving each other in the air with spells when they attempted to get closer to the entrance, people on the ground were also pushing the airborn people back with spells as well.
There seemed to be no one using actual offensive spells and were only using spells that physically moved things, like telekinesis or spells that utilized a kind of invisible force that could push things or people.
The group was absolutely awestruck at the scene, all except Al who had done a little more research. Though the Noraxia Entrance Examination was broadcasted all over the world, it only broadcasted each of the four trials and they had never seen how the registration process went down.
"You guys need some explanation?" Al asked the three, already formulating ideas on how to proceed.
"We'd like that, we had assumed the registration was an… organized ordeal" Gin replied on behalf of his still awestruck friends.
"Basically, there are twenty entrances surrounding this massive curved wall, passing through an entrance would have your DNA scanned and references it to the national database which stores all citizen and foreigner information."
"If your age does not meet the requirement of the examination, an invisible shield would stop you from entering. If your DNA is not part of the country's database, you would also get blocked by an invisible shield" Al explained as he pointed towards the entrances.
"That simple?" Harry asked, surprised there was no other requirement to register.
"If you haven't noticed, the front of each entrance is quite the battlefield and is very difficult to pass through, well, that's what sources online state anyway" Al continued.
"I'll put it more simply, there are around 300,000 here and i estimate that only twenty to thirty people pass through each entrance each minute, making the estimated number of possible examinees 96,000 to 144,000 people roughly"
Al had cast a spell that was able to make him see from a birds eye view over the whole place, using his canvases capabilities to roughly estimate the number of people present and the speed at which the mass of people entered each entrance on average.
"So roughly a 30% to 50% chance of successfully registering, if you were the average person here"
Al concluded.
"And we're all the way at the back!! We'll never register in time!" Zeena said, a little disheartened at the fact.
"It's honestly not that difficult, just being 20% better than the average person here would be enough to guarantee your successful registration"
"Why's that?" Gin asked.
"Since this area is still under the eyes of the law, no one dares cast an actual offensive spell, not even those of higher status would bother try as it isn't worth it for just registering for the examination."
"You may not notice but there are multiple groups of policemen stationed all around the edge of the crowd of people, watching over the whole thing, the city puts a high importance to the registration every year and makes it a habit to send out a certain number of policmen"
"Since that's the case, you'd only be able to use movement spells and spells that affected others movement or displaced their positions, like immobilization spells or spells that pushed you back in order for you to not reach the entrance, or to push you away from the entrance when you near it."
"Those are quite the basic spells and the main thing that makes them stronger is your base magical ability. If you had better magic understanding, your efficiency would be higher and thus your push would be stronger, more Vaes meant longer endurance in using your movement and displacement spells."
"Even being better in battle technique and tactics would work well as they required skill instead of power. Those people who only focused on the power of their spells, focused on one thing and neglecting their foundations wouldn't be able to successfully register as they wouldn't be able to use their offensive spells."
"So this tested our raw ability with magic rather than what we practiced in? And also tests us on our battle foundations?" Gin asked, starting to understand the point of this method of registration.
"Yes, Noraxia Academy obviously thinks that all mages must have a certain level of combat ability to be able to defend themselves, which i totally agree on" Al added on.
"They don't want pure scholars to join their school, well that was already obvious seeing how all four trial has battle involved in one way or the other." Harry said.
"The method to register is just to push through all those people at the front of the entrance, and if you are better than them in magic ability and combat ability, you'd be able to pass?" Zeena asked.
"Yes, and don't worry about people targetting you as there are a ton of people trying to break through the entrances, they would only target you if you're close to the entrance."
"Why can't we just squeeze into the crowd of people near the front and just go with the flow? It seems like it's much easier to enter like that" Harry asked.
"First of all, most of these people have been here since yesterday, just waiting and squeezing against the entrances. They do this because they know that they wouldn't be able to enter otherwise or they are not confident in their ability to register using other methods."
"And even if you tried, they're so tightly packed that you could lay on top of all of them like a hairy bed, and they would all use spells to push you away from them. Same if you tried to run on their heads, you'd just be assaulted with dislocation spells and be flung around atop their heads."
"Also, would you want to squeezed between hundreds and thousands of people while being slowly pushed towards an entrance?"
The three shivered at the thought.
"There also are times when part of the crowd don't even get pushed towards the entrance and actually get pushed away, so its not 100% foolproof either"
"Since that's the case, the only way in is through the air, but i'd only be able to stay airborne for a little while with some wind magic i know, and these two don't know any type of tree dimensional movement spells." Gin said, the two of them looking more disheartened.
"I'll handle that, this isn't the first trial, but i'll help you three through it since i already accepted your request" Al replied as he started walking towards the edge of the mass of people, waving his hand vertically upwards as a set of whitish translucent stairs erected themselves infront of him, going up and over the mass of people.
Al started walking up the stairs without looking back, the three behind him had shocked expressions on their face, as well as numerous other people who had happened to see it.
Looking behind him and seeing that the three were still rooted in place, he gestured to them to hurry up and join him.
The three shook themselves out of their stupor as they noticed his gestures, quickly moving forward and climbing the set of stairs.
When had reached the top, Al had already formed a large whitish platform big enough for all of them to sit comfortable on, with his back facing them as he sat on the edge of the platform, his legs hanging off it.
When had looked behind them, they saw that the stairs had disappeared, and several people falling from the sky? They must've followed after them and didn't think that the stairs would suddenly disappear.
Gin was the first to speak, up on the platform.
"What spell is this?..." He asked, his movements on the platform were subdued, thinking that a sufficient amounts force would break the platform.
"Platform spell from Neutral magic, very specialized spell that created solid platforms made of Vaes, and no they aren't shields you can walk on as the structural integrity of shields is what makes the spells so costly and hard to learn" Al explained.
Harry nodded in agreement, as he knows these things as well.
"You can move on it freely, just don't jump on it or anything as it functions similarly to shields were they consume more Vaes the more pressure or force they have to withstand, and i still have plenty of Vaes so don't worry"
The three relaxed as they carefully sat down on the platform, so as to not cause further burdens for Al.
"This spell is actually quite bad for actual battles as creating a platform takes much more vaes than sustaining it and they can be easily broken by offensive spells, increasing their durability is just a massive waste of Vaes for something you use to walk on."
"But it's a perfect spell for a situation like this where no one dares to use offensive magic right?" Gin guessed.
Al nodded in reply, their respect towards Al rose up a few notches at his versatility, even though there were already quite grateful towards him for saving them.
Hearing that he was an all-rounder didn't help with their impressions of him, and as people aiming for the top, they were biased against all-rounders who've never reached the top before.
They were already a bit amazed on how he was able to totally negate a fire mages spells and was very proficient in healing magic, but knowing that he learned a specific spell for a specific situation truly made them understand the advantages and strengths of all-rounders.
Done with their discussion, they continued on their way to the registration point, reaching it within the next few minutes.
