"What are you doing?!" Zoe asked in her high-pitched hysterical tone.
She was exuberant as she approached that area, expecting there will be improvements in the patents' condition with their interventions.
There were almost fifty people in that location. And the only people that were supposed to be treating them all were the three physicians and Raigon.
But only Raigon and another physician were making sure that they were being hydrated, while the other two were focused on drawing on pieces of paper.
She dashed to the two and picked up the drawings and examined them. There were writings that said, "Sickness be gone in God's name."
One of the physicians explained their intervention.
"If the cause of this is an evil spirit, we need to cast them out with these! When we pray over these drawings, the power of God is transferred on them and they heal the people. This is the reason why we're still alive up to now!"
He was about to pull down his outer garment when Zoe shook her head and sweeped her hands.
"I understand. There's no need to prove it."
Zoe drew in a deep breath with her forehead scrunched up. She crossed her arms as she observed them with their rituals.
'This is their culture. I cannot change it or we'll waste our time with our debate. What shall I do?'
A bright idea came to mind. But she needs authority to do this.
"Can I have a minute with you, your Highness?"
Zoe went to Raigon's side and bowed to him.
Raigon's lips curved up.
'I could give you more than that.'
He wanted to say to her but he just cleared his throat and stood up.
They both went outside the area where Zoe can clearly express herself.
"I understand your divine procedure in treating sick people. But do you just use papers? Don't you use other means?"
Raigon rubbed his chin and thought about it. "We usually use talismans like these. But are you suggesting other methods?"
"Maybe we could use water. Do you remember the mixture that we used in the dungeons? If we could pray over that water, its power would be more powerful. The people will recover quicker than our expected time."
Zoe expounded on her idea and gave him her sweetest smile.
Raigon nodded in agreement. "I think it's not a bad idea. We can do that."
They both went inside and Raigon called on the two physicians, in which they immediately obliged.
He didn't bother the one who was already feeding them. And Zoe helped him out. But her ears were eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Have you tried praying over water before in your medical interventions?"
They looked at one another before replying.
"We do. But it's not as effective as if they are written in the talisman papers.
Zoe couldn't help but butt in and raised her hand.
"What if the water is the exact remedy that the patients need? Combined with your prayers it will be -"
She tried to explain but one of them intercepted her.
"Water? How could water be the only source of treatment for these people? This is a rare disease. We have made them drink all the herbal medicine that we know but they didn't stop vomiting!"
Zoe took in a lungful of air. 'This is harder than in the dungeons. The more knowledge one has, the lesser his acceptance of new learnings.'
She thought it would be easier for them to accept if she would combine their methods. She didn't realize that she even had to make them accept her method before they could allow it to be mixed with theirs.
Since they are physicians, she tried to explain the situation through medical terms.
"What they are experiencing are manifestations of a bacterial infection. These caused them to vomit and have diarrhea. And the cause of their death is dehydration because of that. Until it gets out of the body, we must give them clean water and rehydrate them so they can live."
"Where did you learn all that? We haven't studied about that before."
Zoe closed her eyes as she controlled herself. She was about to speak up when Raigon interfered.
"Who cares if you read it then?! The people are dying! For goodness' sake, get me the water!"
The young physicians feet scrambled in fear as they obeyed the Crowned Prince's command.
Zoe stared at Raigon, bewildered by his reaction.
But her lips curved up in amazement. "I like this side of him." She thought to herself.
It didn't take them long before they grabbed jars of water and pieces of cups.
Zoe got salt and sugar and mixed them with it. Then she gave it back to them to feed on the people.
"Do with them as you do with the talismans." Raigon commanded them.
"It will not be that effective, your Highness. Please believe us. We should use the papers instead." They pleaded with him.
As they were doing so, one of them also vomited. And then the other one. And then the three of them started vomiting profusely.
Raigon immediately put basins in front of them and gave them towels so they could clean themselves.
After they were relieved of their ill feeling, they immediately laid their hands on the jars and prayed over them.
"Here, drink this." Zoe immediately offered to them firsthand the rehydrating solution. The physicians grasped on them like they were grabbing on for dear life.
In a flash, Raigon and Zoe distributed the water to the patients there. But they were only two against the crowd.
Zoe wiped her perspiring forehead with her sleeves.
"Erin, where are you?"
As if her thoughts were read by her best friend, she immediately pierced in through the situation with Azra and the people with the beige cloth.
"Did you miss us?" She beamed at them.
Zoe heaved out a sigh of relief and waved at them.
