" This is the balance pay of Mr Bhagat and Mr Thapa please inform Mr Bhagat his contract is terminated and the other three employees that they can stop coming to the work from tomorrow onwards "

said the HR Rupa Cygal as she passed a check to a slightly skinny manager Bibek Thapa . Bibek took the check and frowned after seeing the numbers on the check.

"This check contains 350$ less the original pay including the fine"

" Mr Bhagat took a old laptop which was company property , 350$ was deducted as compensation according to company regulations "

"That laptop was barely running and was 12 years old nobody in sane mind would pay 10$ for it let alone 350$"

"That laptop was company property , you didn't have the right to donate it Mr Thapa just be glad that company isn't taking action on you"

" Rupa , why do you have to give him such a hard time? when I brought him to you , you recruited him in the company after knowing his circumstances while breaking some of the the company regulations"

" Mr Thapa company is taking this incident seriously and has appointed a committee to investigate this issue, as the customers are demanding a explanation. so , please watch your words unless you want to lose your job over this"

Hearing this Bibek sighed and could only shake his head , an a awkward silence dawned upon the room until a young man rushed in the room while slamming open the door.

" miss Rupa it was all my fault and others were not involved "

" Mr Bhagat please mind your manners, this matter is above mine and your pay grade. the committee has given it's final decision and I can't do anything to change the decision , just be happy that law enforcement officials were not involved"

The young man was Zayn Bhagat. He was barely 18 years old but Rupa recruited him as intern in the companies scholarship program with a reasonable pay and incentives based on his outstanding academic merits and taking his circumstances in consideration. the program provided Bhagat with a full ride scholarship for his desired college while Bhagat had to graduate with above average grades and work at the company for 3 years after graduation according to the contract.

" Bhagat I .. am.. sorr...."

Bibek thapa was the one in charge of the group in which Bhagat joined as intern. Bibek had a good relationship with Bhagat not only in the work place but even outside as they lived in same place as paying guest. He cherished Bhagat just not only because he was a good intern or roomies but he had gone through what Bhagat was going through and saw his younger self in Bhagat. they would commute to work together in Bibek's car , Bibek would find excuse to treat Bhagat to dinner on their way home. whenever Bhagat was bullied by the colleagues or the customers Bibek would protect him. unfortunately Bibek had no choice but to do nothing this time . otherwise , he would lose his well paying job.

"Bother Bibek, you don't have to apologize to me. I understand already"

Bhagat offered words of consolation to Bibek. Bhagat wasn't worried about himself but the other three employees as this job was the only source of for their family. He heard two of three employees getting fired have daughters attending college this year and the last one just had a baby, these was the time for them to have a economically stable household.

" what do you plan to do now Bhagat ? the date to your university opening is approaching near and I was betting on the scholarship program to get your university fees. who would have thought ... that that narcissistic jerk of a customer would deliberately create trouble for you"

almost everyone in the company knew Bhagat's situation. immediately after Bhagat got his high school results , he went straight to Bibek to apply for the scholarship program. when Bhagat just started his high school final year Bibek told him about the scholarship program when Bhagat was trying to find part time to come up with his college fees ahead of time. for him to successfully obtain the scholarship he had to write a entrance exam. Bhagat set the scholarship program as his goal. While going to high school for 8 hrs and studying 4hrs afterwards was considered as studying with their life on line , Bhagat studied 20 hrs a day including the school hrs everyday and the leftover time was used to eat, sleep and use the washroom in other words almost all of his time was spent on completing he syllabus and prepare for the entrance exam.

naturally, because of Bhagat's insane study schedule his harvest was highest. He aced his exams and high scored the entrance exam. It was because of this Rupa Cygal arranged a full ride scholarship program for his desired college with a loose and reasonable work contract when the Bibek recommended Bhagat to her. all he Had to do was maintain above average grades and not ruin the company reputation. which provided him with a part time internship and a full-time job after college.

As the whole thing proceeded smoothly, with the date of university opening nearing , Bhagat had already bagged the scholarship while he already started to work as intern at the company for months. however , nobody would have thought that a customer would deliberately create trouble for Bhagat by getting one of the company share holders to remove him from the company and the scholarship program.

But, the contract was legit so Bhagat was saved but the customer didn't stop there but he planted stolen goods with on Bhagat and other three members of Bibek's team , cancelling the contract and firing all four of them.

Bibek felt that Bhagat had some kind of bad history with the customer otherwise no one would go out of their way to create trouble for a mere intern. Bibek's sense were right on spot. Both Bhagat and the customer's son studied in the same high school. even though both were not besties per se, both of them were at least considered as schoolmates. not only were they school mates but we're going to be future university school mates. but for some reason Raj katappa disliked Zayn Bhagat and deliberately created trouble for Bhagat.

"it's nobody's fault bother Bibek, let just forget about it. I still have time as the saying goes where there is a will there's a way."

Bibek felt a little relaxed seeing Bhagat this light hearted. This scholarship program was a golden opportunity for Bhagat considering that he just graduated from high school and is still a child , at least in modern society, with no particular skill set. This really was a golden opportunity for someone like Bhagat but nobody would gain anything from crying over spilled milk. other than steeling or conning someone he couldn't come up with any other easier idea than the scholarship program but Bhagat knew his limits and principal , wouldn't stoop to such level. difficulties were not new to him , he had overcome many problems and had confidence that he would also over come this one too.

after considering for a while Bibek pulled Bhagat outside of the HR office bidding his byes to Rupa. He said

" Bhagat how about this.... I just happened to saved a little bit of money ..."

" No bother Bibek..."

"just listen first , I am not giving money for free first you pay your college fees and than pay me latter when it is possible okay "

"this ... it's okay bother Bibek I still have time if I can't come up with the money I will give you a call "

Bhagat wouldn't ever considered about borrowing money his grandfather always told he that borrowing was easy way out with lot of mental burden and he had confidence in himself that he will think of something though it's difficulty level is high , however he had his own ideas and principals.

His mother and grandparents had already saved up some money for some difficult times and were planning to use it for Bhagat's college fees. his mother wouldn't have allowed him to work here if it wasn't for the scholarship program. But Bhagat didn't like to use money from his grandparents retirement money even though his grandfather told that it was okay as it's just few more years of farming could earn him that. so, he thought of doing a job that would earn him a few thousand dollars and though it will not be enough for his college fees, the money could at least help lessen his family's financial burden.

Bibek sighed and knew how Bhagat's character was so, he patted Bhagat's back and said

" call me if you need anything , my door is always open for you. l have lots of paper work to finish still, sorry I can't take you home"

" it's okay, I will take the bus. see you later"

after a brief moment both walked in opposite directions, Bibek went to his office and Bhagat went to his cubical.

It was 8pm employees had already left only ones doing overtime were present when Bhagat entered his department, seeing him they stopped what they were working on and started gossiping in whispers

"Did you hear, the new intern just got fired"

"yes, not just fired but the company deducted his three months pay which was yet to be paid and he just completed his fourth month at the job"

"do you know why he is getting fired?"

"I heard he was fired for stealing something from the customer along with three other employees"

"they say that the three employees didn't have anything to do with this scandal but they were at wrong place at wrong time, I really feel bad for them"

" that's just not it two of the three employees have daughters attending college this year and last one just had a baby. It will be really hard for them "

"I thought the intern was cute and innocent from his face and had a bright future ahead , not that I care you know"

" you sex mad girl you can't judge book by its cover"

"shame such shame to throw away such a bright future just for a moment of greed really a shame"

"you are worried about his future , I am worried about his present because the two of the three employees used to be ex gang members of royal axe gang and are waiting for the intern outside"

"get out of here how come the company would hire ex gang members "

"I heard they worked in human resources department as hired muscle, enough of that all of you have got it wrong the intern didn't steel anything , it's just he pissed off a wrong customer who had connections with company shareholders they couldn't fire him because of the work contract so, they scheme against him. It is all fishy that is why they didn't call the police"

"oh really, now I just feel sad for him . I can see his both future and present in danger"

when Bhagat heard all this he didn't take it to his heart because he knew none of their talk mattered what mattered was himself because a elephant waking in road doesn't care about the dogs barking at it. nobody knew anything about the incident only Bhagat knew what his problem was , Raj katappa.

Raj katappa was no more than acquaintances to Bhagat whenever they meet in high school Raj katappa would look at Bhagat as if Bhagat had stolen their ancestors gold , Bhagat didn't know why Raj hated him but today at site when he meet with Raj , he saw Raj's face had an expression filled with cynicism and mockery from his eyes a perverted sense of excitement could be vaguely perceived, showing that he was very happy to see Bhagat today. now Bhagat knew why Raj had such a look on his face. when ever Bhagat thought about it his faced flushed with anger but he calmed himself thinking that every dog had it's day, when his time would come he wouldn't show mercy.

Taking his things, bidding his final good byes to the company Bhagat made his way out off the company and thought that he will be taking crowded streets and not take some dark alley even though it was the shortcut just in case .
