16 Apprenticeship Part 4 , The Systems crusade
" Blood, What is carving?"
"The process of engraving runes onto an item or a material"
The professor shook his head but a ghost of a smile could be seen on his face
"half right again, you are missing an important step"
"what step I thought there was only carving"
A bit of exasperation could be seen on his face
"I'm training you to be a craftsman not an engraver, what does every finished product start out as"
"tools and materials,"
"oh... and payment of course"
The professor seemed pretty satisfied, but after hearing the last part he let out a startled cough and stumbled backwards as if he received a blow from some invisible force. He regained his composure shortly after, he then started smiling as if having remembered something pleasant.
"that's right I haven't charged you any tuition, or fees for the books"
"did I say payment, what I meant to say was charity"
"In that case I will only charge you 27 gold 3 silvers and a dozen coppers"
The amount he mentioned was not so coincidentally equal to the contents of the money purse he threw at me that day in the lecture hall
I gave a sigh of defeat while handing over a coin purse
"student pays his respects"
The contents of the purse amounted to thirty gold coins, I had them set aside to shop for components
The professor inspected the contents posthaste, then giving a sigh of relief
with that the teacher resumed his lecture
"The first aspect of any magic item is the material, the composition and magical properties of the material or item determine the best course for the enchantment, an engraved spell should never contradict the affinities of the material used, going against the grain like that will do more harm than good"
" materials generally have less than three affinities, some materials posses no particular affinities, iron and steel for example often lack affinities entirely, while these materials have poor conductivity they are cheap and relatively easy to work with, most importantly as a metal it can be alloyed or you can use an inlay of another highly conductive material while carving using the steel or iron as an insulator to prevent leakage and improving efficiency"
"other metals like copper or jade have a strong affinity for thunder and ice mana respectively a magic item made entirely of these materials will be more powerful in terms of output, but the leakage will also be greater, the first method also requires more time and skill"
The professor pointed to a wide bookcase with five shelves , it was lined with seemingly identical books alternating between light green, dark green, yellow, orange red, brown, blue, purple, black, and grey
"Here, is an encyclopedia of magic materials it's part a standardized series used across all crafting professions, the volumes here contain an index of metals and minerals sorted by availability, and affinity"
He spoke while pointing at the top shelf
"this set of encyclopedias is a must have if you intend to embark on any of the path's of crafting, the variety and information on materials in these books was bought with no small number of lives"
"this set of books serve as a life companion for any craftsman, forget memorizing them its better to just keep the book on hand human memory is very fallible after all."
"books in the encyclopedia are sorted by Three criteria: Type, Affinity, and Rarity"
"each type of material has a series they are as follows M for metals and minerals . P for plants, O for organic materials harvested from beasts, I for intangible or immovable materials such as spirit springs or energy pools, and U for unclassifiable substances that don't fall into any of the above categories such as antimana"
"not antimatter"
"what on earth would you want antimatter for, that stuff is only good for air freshener"
He said this with a somewhat quizzical expression, as if what he had just said was perfectly normal. It was as if I was the weird on in this conversation.
I was screaming internally , air freshener, they used antimatter for air freshener, AIR FRESHENER, a material that in my life had the potential to be weaponized in a way that made thermonuclear bombs look like water balloons, was used for AIR FRESHENER.
in this world the absurdity of it all, the single most valuable substance from my previous life only amounted to some scented candles here. Did the rest of my modern scientific knowledge also amount to dogshit here. The reality of it all made me want to cry I really need to stick to conventional enchantments until I finish that book.
"sorry continue"
"Each book has two letters and a number, on its spine, The letters refer to type of material and rarity ranging from A-F, F being very common"
"the number refers to the average conductivity of the items in a volume using the alms scale"
The alms scale was a standardized scale of magic resistance, it was often used as a reference to measure the efficiency of the damage penetration properties of certain spells against various types of barriers. It is also used to identify the conductivity of materials to magic or their resistance to magic.
"the Color identifies the primary attribute of the materials in the book and their corresponding element"
"light green is wind"
"Dark green is botanical or wood"
"yellow is lightning or thunder"
"Orange is fire"
"Red is hemomancy"
"brown is earth"
"blue is water"
"Grey is life and death magic"
"Purple is spacial magics"
"Black books are indexing volumes"
"the Indexing volumes are often used for identification or for finding a material with properties that fit your needs there is one indexing book for each rarity of materials of each type, there is also one master index that covers all types"
"in total there are 10 volumes for each rarity of each material type, with five material types and six classifications of rarity, the total number of volumes in a standard set is normally 300, but specialty volumes exist that target a region, these volumes can be bought at any guild location and maintain the organization of encyclopedias these volumes are called regional indexes, they are often shorter than standard indexes despite covering all material types and attributes with some exceptions"
"region volumes are similar to region indexes but are a full miniature encyclopedia for a given area, if you intend to stay in an area for an extended period of time and are unable to afford a full set of encyclopedias this is a common option for sedentary craftsman"
"for the time being I want you to have a look at the materials available and determine what is best for your first project, I'm sure that you can find materials suitable for whatever you have in mind, I'm sure you have some enchantments in mind, I encourage you to experiment with different materials and find something suitable to any arrays you want to attempt"
The professor then left the laboratory

seeing the death penalty and the time limit it was clear that surly wasn't screwing around I ran over to the book shelf and thumbed through each volume page by page so the system to scan it in as such I spent two days without sleep thumbing through every page of the 300 plus books on the shelf, and these weren't small books either each of them amounted to several thousand pages.
The professor would come in with food occasionally with every entry he would ask if I had any questions or if I had found an appropriate material, every time I told him I was still exploring my options, he never implored me to take a break or rest he only provided food and offered guidance, should I need it. The timing which he arrived and left was thoughtful, he was never intrusive and he never broached the subject of payment again.

mentally exhausted I went over to the workstation sat down and curled up on the table, falling asleep in a matter of seconds
