Parts were illegible due to the blood, however, he could somewhat fill in the more obvious blanks. Ignoring the weird glitch in his race, Jae Farley was more concerned about the negative luck.
'A-Am I misfortunate?'
It was the same shock he had when he found out his financial situation was subpar compared to others. Or, when his mother pointed to her Caesarean section scar and told him he came out from there when he was four.
Reflecting on his life, he was most certainly unlucky. His family was on the poorer side, his mother disappeared when he was five, he had failed to get into any college, and when he was about to graduate high school, he died of a bombing which just coincidentally happened on his graduation field trip. This wasn't even mentioning the dreadful events that occurred in his current world.
"Seriously, why don't you just get a new job?" Farlyn was still chatting with the receptionist.
"The job's safe compared to what you, adventurers, do. Plus I have no skills other than doing this...Now, back to finishing your registration," changing the subject, the receptionist shifted his view towards the dark paper.
"Let's see here, I only need to verify the information on the top. The paper should reset in an hour..." He skimmed through the document and compared it to Jae's written paper, "Alright, you're all set. Let me go make your identification card." The man's eyes were dazed as if he simply wanted to be done with the day. Luckily for Jae, the receptionist hadn't noticed the peculiarities of Jae's status.
After the receptionist moved to one of the inner rooms with the documents, he soon came out with a white card with Jae's basic information. "For now, you're at rank one. There are twelve ranks that go from light colors to darker ones, and finally to black. If you want to rank up, do requests, rack up achievements, and gain fame or something. A normal adventurer can take missions up one rank higher. But, since your under ten, you can't do any requests outside your rank."
"Now hurry up and take the card, my break is in five minutes and I am not missing my only meal of the day," shoving the card at Jae, he closed his office and fled. For someone who appeared to have one step into his grave, he sure was talkative.
"Haaah, sorry about him. He's normally not like this," Farlyn sighed, "I'll put up a request send you to the orphanage in the next town, Othmor. Since you are now an official adventurer, would you like to do a request? I can help you get started while we wait for someone else to take the request. Sorry, I can't take you myself, my party accepted a different mission in the town opposite in direction from there."
Jae complied. He felt slightly sorry for tricking her, but he was going to run away either during the request or right after. After all, he was starting to get worried about the group. Or, rather, he was concerned that Scarlett would rampage into town to search for him.
Not that she would actually be looking for him, but for the money in his pockets that they looted from the researchers in order to buy food. It turned out the researchers were dirt poor as they only had enough on their bodies for a week's worth of sandwiches.
The scariest part is that she might really charge in for that meager amount of money.

"That's Light Sage and this should be Opal Grease."
"Wow, you're quite knowledgable about plants."
Jae and Farlyn were currently in the outer regions of the nearby forest. The mission Jae chose was an herb scavenging one as he remembered seeing the herbs requested on the way out of the forest.
"Hey, Farlyn, there are so many races out there, but I haven't met that many elves like you. Since your an adventurer, I assume you've seen a lot," Jae started a conversation in hopes of obtaining information from her.
"Yes! I've been traveling all over the Central Continent with my companions. We've visited the dwarven country up north, the human empires in the West, the beastfolk of the east, and the mermen of the southern waters. I haven't been to the Western nor Southern Continent, but I heard there's one demon lord in each. Oh yeah, my hometown is a couple of miles away from here," Farlyn responded.
"Farther northwest, past the Cursed Mountains, would be another demon's territory," she frowned in disdain, "Speaking of demons, I heard that the demon king and his undead minions in the Southern Continent are planning on another war...Demons and monsters should disappear."
Unlike her usual kind self, Farlyn displayed blatant prejudice against the demons. Although Jae did abhor the researchers who were demons, he couldn't say he hated all of them. After all, Jade Hargraves, the former student council president, was technically some kind of demon. Furthermore, the researchers not only included demons but also all the races Farlyn listed and more.
He simply could not despise entire races for what a small minority had done to him and his companions.
This mindset was due to recovering under Altwidus's presence. Otherwise, he may have hated all of the races in this world with blind discrimination, similar to how Farlyn was viewing the demons and undead.
"Well, those should be enough h--"
Suddenly, a girl created from lustrous crystal emerged from the shadows. Catching Farlyn by surprise, the girl swung a wooden log in her hands and knocked Farlyn out.
"Alexis! What are you doing?!" Jae yelled out.
From the trees emerged the African Pygmies!
No, that's incorrect.
From the trees emerged Jae's companions who were camping out and waiting for the boy.
"Yo! You alright Jae? We were so worried about you!" Scarlett shouted as she tied Farlyn up in vines.
"No, no, no. Why did Alexis do that?"
"We thought that woman was going to murder you or something. Also, Jade did tell Alexis to back you up when in trouble," Nora replied, hopping closer to the group.
"Why would you ever think that?"
"A lone woman taking a young boy into a secluded area. The boy was found raped and dead. That was the headliner for the news I saw a couple of years back," Iris remarked while smiling.
After listening to Iris, Jae realized that Iris was teasing the group, but Scarlett overreacted and initiated Alexis to attack. Looking at the group, he noticed that Jade, Clara, Melody, Wendy, and Bridget were missing.
No wonder they had strange ideas stuck in their heads. Without the members with actual common sense and logic in their minds, the rest would actually do such utterly foolish actions. He began to doubt the education system back on his old planet for producing such dim-witted high schoolers.
"S-sorry. I t-tried to s-stop them," Natalie stammered.
Jae sighed, "So, where's everyone else?"
"They went to look for you. Bridget and Wendy are fast on their legs while Jade, Melody, and Clara can hide their wings and other parts in their robes, so they entered the town," Nora answered.
Groan.
Farlyn twitched and slowly woke up albeit in a stupor, "Who...are you children?!"
"Permission to knock out the subject."
"No!" Jae denied Alexis's words and turned to Farlyn, "I apologize, Farlyn. They didn't mean to harm you." Or rather, they did, but she didn't need to know that.
Examining her attackers, her head cleared up instantly as she abruptly screamed, "Y-you tricked me! Vile undead! Monster children!"
"Ouch, those words hurt my kokoro," Nora pretended to be hurt as she placed a tentacle where her nonexistent chest would be.
"Farlyn, please calm down," Jae tried to sooth the terror-stricken elf.
"I see that undead over there. You must be spies from the blasted Southern Continent!" Farlyn was referring to Layla, who just happened to be picking flowers in the distance.
"She's not listening. Should I use violence to silence her?" Scarlett suggested.
"Eeek!"
"Maybe. No, wait. Don't do it," Jae rubbed his temples. Despite the fact Farlyn had helped him, he had only met the elf the day before and had no other feelings than pity for her predicament. Overall, the whole situation was problematic to him. He really missed Jade who could somehow keep these girls in check.
Smiling, Iris drew closer to Farlyn as the latter trembled in fear. "Hello, Miss Farlyn. You seem to have taken care of our Jae for the past day. Will you be willing to elaborate on what occurred?"
"I-I just let Jae stay over for a night and helped him register at the Adventurer's Guild," Farlyn couldn't understand why she was so afraid of Iris.
"What should we do now? Should we go get Jade and the others?" Nora asked.
"I guess we should."
Dong! Dong! Dong!
Bells chimed in the distant town.
"The town's alarm!" Farlyn paled.
"Oh n-no! Did J-Jade and the others get caught?" Natalie exclaimed. In response, Alexis's body flickered as she rushed towards the town.
"Iris and Scarlett, come with me. The rest of you stay here!" Jae commanded. As he was about to follow, he paused for a moment when he heard Farlyn's question.
"Jae, are you really human?" Farlyn's eyes glimmered with the last bit of hope she had left.
"I...I want to believe that I am."
