18 Rush of Blood

Rewinding a few moments, Bel was still facing against The Lion, the two unaware of the intense battle that was about to unfold on the other side of the room. Without warning, The Lion tossed his shield at Bel. The latter could never have predicted such a move and was a tad too late to avoid it, and he was sent flying when the defensive implement violently collided with his chest. He managed to avoid falling to the ground and landed on his feet, but the impact had knocked his breath out. As such, he was barely able to raise his sword in time when two swords crashed towards him.

Two swords? Bel was given a fright, and he realized The Lion had abandoned his shield to wield another sword. Bel knew that he was in trouble. The reason he had been able to stand on equal ground with The Lion was that the latter was taking a defensive stance and Bel was able to overwhelm him. If The Lion were switching strategies and going on the offensive, Bel would be had pressed to suppress him. The two of them exchanged a few blows, but Bel was forced to block one blade and dodge the other, reducing his ability to send significant attacks to his adversary.

Refusing to be pushed back any further, Bel took a risk and only dodged the first blade of the next attack. The second sword harshly bit in the flesh of his leg and he felt a stinging pain. However, this gave him the opportunity to send a strike of his own. Relying on his trusty overhead slash, he sent his oversized blade straight into The Lion's shoulder. He had put all his weight into this attack and if it missed he would be left severely destabilized and unable to counter the next assault. Thankfully, The Lion hadn't predicted that Bel would take such a suicidal approach and the sword tore through the metal. The armour was thinner above the shoulder as it couldn't interfere with the movements of the neck and Bel had poured his entire strength in that one attack. As such, Bel's sword managed to pass through the armour and bite directly into the flesh.

The Lion let out a blood-curdling scream and dropped the sword he was holding in that hand. At that moment, Bel lifted his sword again but didn't strike again. The two of them then broke off the fight by taking a few steps back and staring at each other. Since he had been injured quite severely in the leg, Bel didn't want to prolong the fight. He was still able to use his leg without problems due to a combination of his mental fortitude and the adrenaline rushing through his veins, but if he didn't end this quickly, things would get ugly.

By this point, they knew that their opponent wasn't someone they could take down immediately and they had to choose between continuing the fight or helping their respective allies in their battle. As the two recovered their breath, they also eyed the opposing party, ready to intervene at a moment's notice.

Bel had always been impatient and bloodthirsty, and he was the first to break their staring contest, but instead of going towards Amon, he instead took out a grenade and threw it at The Lion. Since both of his hands were occupied, he could send it back, and since space was limited, he couldn't get very far before the grenade exploded. This time, the explosion wasn't muffled by a piece of furniture, and it sent The Lion flying. At this point, Bel bolted towards Amon and parried a deadly strike from The Undying. The latter had taken advantage of Amon's failed attempt at gutting him after he had repelled Stormbringer's and his combined attack by using his daggers and had launched a fatal blow. Thankfully, Bel had just dealt with his opponent. After blocking the strike, he yelled towards Amon: "We need to get out of here. By now, their guard must be on their way!"

This shout pulled Amon out of his revery, and he nodded towards Bel as the two of them ran towards the exit while Bel once again parried The Undying. The two of them followed the same way they had come in and quickly arrived in the dock. Amon closed the door behind them while Bel pressed the button that opened the garage door. The two of them knew that they had a very close brush with death tonight. The only reason they had survived was that the Holy Knights had decided to take them on by themselves. Since the basement was very narrow and cramped, Stormbringer had agreed that their forces would most likely be a hindrance to their fighting strength. As such, the two Ravens only had the three men to face. Even then, the fight wasn't going in their favour as even though they had landed a few solid hits, the odds were stacked against them and when Stormbringer would have come to his senses, he would have taken care of the both of them.

The two Ravens were able to flee this certain death scenario without overly severe injuries, and the knowledge they had gained was invaluable. Right now, they only needed to escape. When the garage door was opened, the two of them bolted and ran in zig-zag to make it harder for the spotlights that were currently trying to focus on them. These lights were coming from the mansion and served in guiding the turrets in firing. The two of them were fast enough to avoid them and soon arrived at the auxiliary checkpoint. Since they couldn't be slowed down, Amon took out another knife, and he threw both knives he currently held at the four guards blocking their escape. His aim was excellent, even in such dim lighting and he was able to hit two guards in the throat, instantly killing them.

When they got closer, Bel chopped down the other two who exploded in a mess of blood and bones from the impact. Without slowing down, the two men ran in the streets and without a word. After a while, they stopped in a dark corner, and Amon turned to Bel with concern written all over his face. "Are you alright, can you continue running with that leg of yours?

-It should be fine, just let me bandage it real quick. I don't want to leave a trail of blood that traces back to me.

-Before that, let me see it.

Amon kneeled and examined the injury on Bel's leg. Although it seemed rather nasty, the wound wasn't particularly deep, and nothing vital was hurt. Bel should have no problem using his leg apart from some slight pain from time to time. He tore off a part of his shirt and quickly bandaged Bel's leg.

-You might want to stitch that together. It'll be painful, but we can't go to the hospital.

-Don't worry about that; I've gotten worse injuries too many times to count. We shouldn't stay here for too long, but before that, what do we do now boss?

Amon could sense ridicule in Bel's voice as it was his leadership that had led them to this situation. He thought he was outsmarting the Holy Knights, but he had been entirely played by Stormbringer. He couldn't let that get him down as their mission had just started and they still needed to try again tomorrow before the Holy Knights attacked the safe house.

-Tomorrow morning, come to my room, and we'll reorganize and launch a new attack. This time, I'll try to get us a new ally to level the playing field.

Bel revealed a wild look "You've spoken of our mission to an outsider?

Amon could sense the pure rage seething behind his eyes and hurriedly calmed him down.

-They're not an outsider. They're an intelligence operative from the Ravens, but they had a great fighting strength and managed to lend a draw in a duel with me.

The anger that threatened to overtake Bel evaporated almost instantly, and he nodded his head.

-If we can have the help of an operative, this mission might become much easier. I won't ask how you came across an intelligence operative while most of them are occupied with evacuation, but I hope you're confident of doing the right thing.

-Don't worry; they're trustworthy. Now, we shouldn't linger."

With this, the two separated. The two assassins knew they had a higher chance of losing their pursuers if they separated. Right now, no one from the mansion was pursuing them, but they knew the chase would start once the Holy Knights had gathered their spirits and sent the order to search for them.

Despite their failure to kill any of the Holy Knights, Amon was satisfied that they had levelled the playing field. At first, they were being lured by Stormbringer, but since they had managed to survive his trap, they could now begin the counter-offensive. For now, the two Ravens would go back to their respective hotel, and in the morning, they would regroup and plan the second phase of their mission; the assassination of the Holy Knights.
