15 From the Back Door

Amon and Bel once again crossed the street arrived in front of the mansion. While looking as inconspicuous as possible, the two of them circled to the side where the auxiliary entrance was situated. they passed it and hid behind the adjacent house. Thankfully, it was a Monday, and there were few people in the streets, or at home; otherwise, they might have been seen. They waited in ambush for nearly forty-five minutes before the sound of a truck made its way into their ear.

It was a dark blue pick up truck with a large cargo bed covered by a cloth. The car stopped at the checkpoint for the auxiliary entrance, and the two Ravens knew that they had to seize their opportunity carefully. There were four guards, two on each side and one of the guards on the right approached the driver for authentification. The other one walked to the back and inspected the cargo. The truck was too tall for Amon and Bel to see what the guards on the other side were doing, but they decided to act when the two guards on the right went back to their post. As the truck was about to drive into the estate, Amon and Bel jumped out of their hiding spot, about five meters away and slid under the cloth covering the products. Thanks to their physical augments, their explosive strength was immense, and they were able to shoot themselves forward at high speed. As such, they were barely able to escape notice in half a second the two guards had their backs turned on them.

Now hidden in the cargo bed of the truck, Amon and Bel felt it advance slowly towards its destination. A few moments later, the vehicle stopped before proceeding again. After entering the indoor discharging dock, the truck stopped once more. The two Ravens couldn't hear any voice coming from the inside, and Amon decided to get out immediately. Bel followed right after him. The dock was mostly empty, and it was likely that the driver was only meant to discharge the products right here before he left. Thankfully, there were several empty boxes, probably used to store and move some things around, and they were able to quickly hide behind them before the driver of the truck saw them.

The driver quickly emptied his truck before he left. Now alone in the dock, the two Ravens waited for someone to come pick up the food. After a few minutes, they heard voices coming from the other side of the door leading to the rest of the estate. A couple of employees came in and took the food that was delivered with them. Now alone in the nearly empty dock, Amon looked towards Bel and whispered. "I think we should wait here for nightfall to come. We don't know the situation inside, and we should be as careful as possible.

alright, let's wait here until everyone inside is asleep and then we'll do our thing.

With these words, the two men fixed their sitting position and prepared for a long time of waiting. They were used to such things and weren't bothered in the least as they waited for the perfect time to make their exit. The hours passed by in pure boredom, and when midnight struck, the two men hurriedly got on their feet. During their waiting, Amon had sent a message to Ven informing her of the current situation, but she replied that she couldn't be of any help as she was scheduled for night patrols, a task commonly given to rookies.

Amon motioned to Bel, and the two approached the door leading to the estate. He stuck his ear on the door but couldn't hear anytime from the other side. Amon guessed that since the external security was so intense, there would be little in the way of guards inside but he didn't want to take any risks.

When he was sure there wasn't anyone on the other side, he slowly opened the door. The door opened smoothly and without a sound. Amon exited the dock and arrived in a long corridor. The door was in the middle of this corridor, and there were stairs at both ends of the hallway. The left side led upwards while the right led downwards. Amon chose to start by exploring the basement, where he expected to find the Holy Knights base of operation. The upstairs was most likely reserved for living quarters and the mayor's personal space.

Since the Holy Knights planned their assault on the safe house to occur in two days, they were most likely working overtime on their battle plan. As such, Amon banked on the fact that they would still be working at such a late hour.

The two men sneakily went down the stairs and were greeted by another long hallway. The concrete floor of the basement was well lit by the neon lights on the ceiling. From the unfinished appearance of this basement, it was evident that the mayor hadn't had the time to complete the design of it. Amon, followed closely by Bel, went down the corridor and noticed a series of open entrances. There were no doors despite the presence of hinges, probably because they had lacked time to install the doors before the Holy Knights occupied the basement.

As they went past them, Amon checked the rooms these entrances led to, but they were all empty.

From an entrance about five meters away, Amon could hear a soft voice but couldn't make out what it was saying but slowed down to a crawl as he wanted to avoid making any noise. When he came next to the entrance, he could hear what the voice was saying more clearly. "On Wednesday, we will begin our assault of the safe house of the Ravens here in New-Paris. It seems they have received the news in advance as they have started evacuating but that matters not as they won't have time to clear the place fully. Right now, they haven't managed to move everything out of their hiding spot and will most likely fight to the death trying to protect it. If they sense that they're about to fail, I expect them to destroy everything to stop us from getting our hands on any information about their other hiding spots in Europe.

To prevent such a thing from happening, we will need to strike fast and with an unstoppable force to cripple them before they can even self-destruct. It seems they still underestimate our current fighting strength so this would pose no problem apart from a little recent hiccup. The captain of the guard was killed recently. As you know, he and a few trusted subordinates were given augmentations. One of them was even a pyromancer. For the captain and the pyromancer to be killed and the others injured in the way they were, the attacking party must have been unbelievably strong.

When I was informed of the details of the attack, I had my suspicions that assassins from the Ravens perpetrated this action. However, I couldn't be sure, and this uncertainty worried me. Thankfully, I managed to clear my doubts just now. Those assassins were indeed assassins from the Ravens."

At this point, another voice interjected. This voice contrasted with the previous soft-spoken voice and was rough with the weight of life. If Amon had to take a wild guess, the owner of the last voice would most likely be their strategist, Stormbringer. This new voice would probably be The Lion. The content of Stormbringer's speech worried him as it meant they had already found out about their presence. He wondered what else they knew and listened carefully to what The Lion had to say.

-So you're saying we're going to face two assassins from the Ravens? I know how hard they are to handle. They could strike us at any moment, and we might be dead before we even realized we were under attack. They were confident they could kill the captain of the guard in a fight, and so they didn't bother too much with subtlety. If they find out about us and try to eliminate us, I'm afraid we'll need to be on max alert as a single instant of carelessness could get us killed.

-Don't worry; I also considered this. At first, I was apprehensive that their presence would make this whole ordeal near impossible. I was worried that something like this could be happening when we came here a month ago, and I was raking my brain to find a solution when I realized an elementary fact. They are assassins; and where are the skills of an assassin most useful? On a battlefield or preemptively eliminating their target? Once I found the answer to that question, it was only a matter of discovering when they would attack. The captain's murder served me that knowledge on a platter.

-So, when will they strike?

A third voice resounded from inside the entrance. This voice sounded bored with everything that was happening. On the other hand, Amon's blood was slowly freezing from sheer fright. He had a sinking feeling that he had been played by Stormbringer and that his presence in the mayor's basement was all part of his plan. It was only at that moment that he understood why bel had called Stormbringer the most troublesome part of the Holy Knights' group.
