282 The Vet Clinic
Marlowe looked up at Emma playing with his pet bird and looked awestruck. Even though this girl couldn't talk to animals, it seemed like his pets got along well with her quickly.
"What did you give her?" asked Marlowe suddenly. He had noticed that Lyra's wounded nape had now been covered with some kind of herb from crushed leaves. "Do you know how to treat wounds?"
Emma shook her head. "I don't know. But I read the encyclopedia that this plant has healing properties. So I created the leaves for an emergency wound ointment. I saw you had given emergency treatment to the wounds. Not much blood came out ..."
Marlowe leaned over to Lyra and examined the animal's wounds. He also noticed that there were some calendula leaves on the ground. He took the leaf and showed it to Emma.
"So you are a herbomancer, huh?" He asked. A moment later, his brows furrowed in surprise." I've never seen this plant before. What's this? "
Emma gasped. She didn't know whether to make up the plant's name or say it was some foreign plants from overseas.
"You've never seen it? Ahh .. maybe because this is not from Akkadia. I'm from Taeshi ... very far from here," Emma replied, trying to make her words as ambiguous as possible.
"I'm from Taeshi," commented Marlowe." And I'm a herbomancer too. I've never seen this plant."
Emma was stunned by Marlowe's words. This man ... is also a herbomancer? And he's also from Taeshi?
The girl swallowed hard. Now she felt pointless to lie to Marlowe. Emma was afraid that if she kept lying to Marlowe, the man would find out, and he would have the impression that Emma was a pathological liar.
Finally, she sighed. "I didn't say this plant is from Taeshi. I once visited a research ship that had just returned from exploration to another planet. They brought in several animals and plants from new species. Including this calendula plant."
She decided to lie but made it half truth. Didn't the Akkadian research team always come back with new species to Akkadia for research purposes?
She remembered the corpse flower in the Merridell Botanical Garden was brought from Earth, and the dragons in the Foxvil forest she saw yesterday were brought from Daneria.
"Hmm ... is that so?" Marlowe nodded. It seemed like he believed Emma's words because her explanation sounded plausible.
It would be more difficult to believe her if Emma admitted the truth, that she was a girl from the planet Akkadia who was born on Earth, six light-months away from here. She spent the first 18 years of her life on that planet that was so far away, across the universe.
"I didn't know you were a herbomancer too," said Emma. "Therius only said you are a Beast Master."
Marlowe shrugged. "He doesn't know. I only started having herbomancy power a few years ago. Quite late indeed."
"Oh .. I did not know a new power can emerge after a person becomes an adult, "said Emma." Apparently, there are many multiple element mages now. It used to be quite rare."
Emma remembered that her mother used to say that the multiple-element mages were very rare. In fact, Xion also mentioned that in the last one hundred years, multiple-element mages in Akkadian was less than twenty.
Then why were there so many now? She knows from Ulla that Bastian was a multiple-element mage. And then she, Therius, and Xion were also multiple-element mages. And now, is Marlowe too?
"This may be a new phenomenon," explained Marlowe. "Usually, a mage's power will come out right away when they were a child. That's why the government could register them and send them to the mage school. But I've met someone who thought he was an ordinary human all his life .. and only at the age of 30 he discovered that he was actually a mage. So, his power showed up really late. Some people also had one power for decades, and suddenly years later they woke up with a new one."
"Oh .. does the government know about this?" asked Emma. She wanted to ask Therius about this. Did her husband, as the Akkadian monarch know this, or not.
Marlowe shrugged. "I don't know and I don't care. Anyway, when I realized that I am also a herbomancer, I didn't announce it to the world. What for? "
"Oh ... I see ..." Emma nodded. She then shifted their conversation to Lyra, who was still lying injured on the ground." Shouldn't we take Lyra to the clinic? "
"Hmm ... "Marlowe nodded. He handed Alex Chu over to Emma and prepared to lift Lyra off the ground. "Please take Alex Chu. I have to carry up Lyra."
Emma was a little startled when she received the golden tailed bird. "Why don't you let it fly? Alex can fly, can't he?"
Marlowe answered without looking at Emma. He carefully carried Lyra on his shoulder. "He can't fly at night. You have to carry him."
"Eh ...?" Emma was puzzled. She looked at the golden bird, which immediately rubbed its head against Emma's shoulder. "You really can't fly at night? That's odd."
She was about to ask questions again, but Marlowe had already walked off toward the west. Emma had to follow him behind. "Where are you going? I know the clinic is in the East."
Emma had read the floor plans of important buildings at the academy. The school was located in the middle, and the clinic is near the dorms. Then why did Marlowe walk in the opposite direction from the
dorm?
"Why are you taking Lyra to the clinic?" asked Emma again when she had caught up with Marlowe's steps. Alex Chu was now perched on the girl's shoulder.
"It's a clinic for humans. I'll take Lyra to the vet clinic," Marlowe finally replied.
"Oh ... "Emma had to follow Marlowe's lead. Besides feeling curious to know where the vet clinic was located, she was also worried about Lyra's condition and wanted to see her treated. She was also still not feeling sleepy.
It would be better if she kept herself busy so that later she would feel tired and sleepy, then she would be able to sleep well.
They walked along the path around the small forest and then stopped in front of a small wooden hut covered with vines. This hut reminded Emma of the witch's house in fairy tale books.
"This is ... a vet clinic?" Emma asked in amazement. This place didn't look like a vet clinic at all. "Is the vet still awake?"
She saw the lights in the cabin were off, and it was very dark.
Had Emma not been a brave girl with many powers, and she didn't know Marlowe as Therius' schoolmate, maybe she would have felt scared and hesitate to follow Marlowe to a dark and quiet place like this.
Marlowe waved his hand and suddenly, all the lights in and around the hut came on.
"Don't waste energy unnecessarily," snorted Marlowe, as if to criticize that Emma should have known better that they had to conserve energy to care for nature.
This guy's very judgmental ... Emma thought, started getting annoyed. Marlowe became curt again after he was acting friendly to her just a while ago.
However, because Marlowe was her teacher at this academy, Emma decided to remain respectful of him. Marlowe was older, after all, and he also turned out to be a herbomancer. Emma felt that the man would be able to help her train her herbomancy skills.
The hut door opened automatically, and Marlowe took Lyra inside. Emma followed with Alex Chu still perched on her shoulder. When they got inside, Emma saw a large living room with several small beds containing animals sleeping or being treated.
There were several small animals that looked like rabbits and squirrels, a few birds perched on top of a cupboard looking sleepy, and suddenly an animal with long furs, like a dog or a floor mop, she could tell which, since the fur was so long it swept the floor, darted toward Marlowe's feet.
"Jeez ... what animal is that?" asked Emma in surprise. She could not see the head and face of this animal at all, because everything was covered with fur. This animal looked like snowballs if they had fur. It was round and fat.
Marlowe turned in surprise at Emma. "Didn't you say you were from Taeshi? Why don't you recognize Uwauwa?"
"Uwauwa?" Emma batted her lashes at Marlowe's question. She had never heard of that animal before.
Ugh ... this is bad. Marlowe would soon know that Emma wasn't really from Taeshi.
