Chapter 33: Talent Ledger Part Three
Chang’an was the heart of Great Sui, and Tai Chi Palace was the heart of Chang’an.
The Royal Palace Complex was in the north zone of Chang’an, and it occupied tens of thousands of acres of land.
The Royal Palace Complex was divided into four sections. Tai Chi Palace was in the middle, and it was where the Emperor hosted daily morning meetings with the high-level officials. To the west was the Side Palace, and to the northeast was the Crown Prince East Palace. To the direct south was the Royal City; it was where the Queen and the concubines lived.
Walking out of Tai Chi Palace from the small back door and heading to the north, the Comfort Palace would soon appear. It was much smaller than Tai Chi Palace, but it wasn’t less important. This was where the Emperor rested and handled different issues. The so-called Royal Study was inside the Comfort Palace, and it was the East Warmth Chamber of the Comfort Palace.
Heaven-Blessed Emperor Yang Yi was the least attracted to women out of all emperors of Great Sui. The number of his concubines was less than one-third of that of his father, and he loved the Queen the most. Even the pickiest person couldn’t say that Yang Yi was in the wrong in this aspect.
He had complained in private many times. “Why is the Royal Palace Complex this big? I need to travel so far to talk to a girl. My legs would be sore when I get there; what else can I do?”
The Emperor didn’t know that the residents of Chang’an also complained. If the residents in the east zone wanted to eat at a restaurant in the west zone, they had to travel a day before since it would take a day and a half to get there by taking the most direct path on a horse-drawn carriage; they even had to rest in an inn at night.
Since Huai Qiugong, the Head of the Ministry of Rites, was a senior and had great merit, he had the privilege of not kneeling when seeing the Emperor.
In fact, there was a chair for him inside the East Warmth Chamber.
“How was it?” the Emperor asked. While looking at the memorials to the throne, he ate an almond biscuit. The Emperor had a strange habit; he didn’t like sitting on chairs, so he ordered people to build a heatable brick bed in the East Warmth Chamber. He would sit cross-legged on the heatable brick bed when dealing with the memorials to the throne, and he would lie down and nap when he was tired.
The officials praised him for his hardworking attitude, but it was because he was lazy.
Of course, he was only lazy in some ways; he was never lazy in dealing with the management of Great Sui.
Hearing the question from the Emperor, Huai Qiugong didn’t answer.
Emperor Yang Yi waited for a moment. Not hearing a response, he looked up and saw the senior official who was white-haired and white-bearded staring at the plate of almond biscuits and licking his lips.
The Emperor smiled and ordered Sui Buwei, the eunuch who was serving him, to take the half plate of almond biscuits to Huai Qiugong.
“You are old, but you are still shameless,” the Emperor said.
Huai Qiugong placed an almond biscuit in his mouth and replied while chewing, “Seeing Your Majesty enjoying the biscuit, I became hungry again. The people of Northern Liao should be ok; this doesn’t seem like a conspiracy of Mongo-Yuan. If it is a trap, I think it is too crude.”
“Mong Ge has the thought, but he doesn’t have the courage,” the Emperor laughed, “Fangu is being guarded by Li Xiaozong, right? He is clever. Immediately summon him to Chang’an.”
“I heard from Wanyan Zhongde that a young man named Fang Jie saw through his mind, and this young man told him not to worry and big officials will meet him in Chang’an.”
“Fang Jie?” The Emperor was surprised. “How come this name sounds so familiar?”
Eunuch Su Buwei who stood on the side with his back bent reminded quietly, “He is a participant of the entrance exam of the Martial Arts Academy from Fangu; Your Majesty talked about him with Intelligence Department Head Hou Wenji.”
“Him again?” The Emperor sat straighter and thought for a moment before grabbing a thick book and writing down Fang Jie’s name in it. Then, he added comments beside the name before putting it to the side.
This book was thick and well-aged. It had a green cover, and two words were written on it – [Talent Ledger].
