Chapter 28: Can You Be Pure-Minded? Part Two
“I was a member of Shang. But before Shang was destroyed, Shang wasn’t a surname. My father was a loyal official of Shang. After the Shang Empire was conquered, he changed our family name, causing a catastrophe for us. Since my father was a high-level official, he knew some secrets. The Emperor of Southern Yan doesn’t have a sliver of royal bloodline of Shang. He is nothing but a cunning and opportunistic b*stard. I even suspect that he was the spy that Emperor of Great Sui sent to Shang.”
“He didn’t only submit to Great Sui; he even called himself ‘child emperor’. He lacks the courage that the people of Shang have. However, if he didn’t do this, Southern Yan wouldn’t be saved. Since he showed this level of flattery toward Great Sui, Yan that is only one-third the size of Shang got saved.”
[TL Note: Child emperor is a derogatory term. By submitting to someone and calling themselves child emperors means that they were calling themselves children of the former.]
“Is this your history of blood and tears?” Fang Jie asked.
“Nonsense!” Da Quan sighed, “My father was stubborn and foolishly loyal. Otherwise, our family wouldn’t have been broken apart. I was a playboy from a big family, and someone asked me to take care of you after I escaped from my family’s disaster.”
Fang Jie waved the half-eaten roasted rabbit leg in his hand and said, “Tell me who asked you to protect me. If you tell me, I will give this half rabbit leg to you as well.”
Da Quan licked his lips, wrapped his jacket around himself tighter, and lay back onto the grass. “I’m full.”
Fang Jie cursed quietly and chewed up the rest of the meat and even the bone.
“Da Quan.”
“I want to ask you about something else.”
“Don’t ask me who is behind this; I won’t ever tell you. If you are pent-up… you can go find those girls in the front, or I can be on guard, and you can take care of it yourself.”
“F*ck off!” Fang Jie cursed as he sat down beside Da Quan.
After hesitating for a while, he asked, “What does it feel like… to cultivate? You know that I can’t, so my understanding is very limited. Since I can’t feel it, I’m more interested in it.”
“What do you think it should feel like?” Da Quan asked.
“It should be pleasant,” Fang Jie replied.
Da Quan replied with a blade of dry grass between his lips, “To tell you the truth, I don’t know how it feels like. I can tell you how my body changed, but I don’t have any inspiration, except that I eat a lot more than before.”
“What changes happened to your body?”
“The simplest thing is that the dantian, which is also known as the sea of qi, will expand. The qi that you cultivate in the sea of qi will enter other areas of your body, making you stronger. The most basic cultivation is moving qi through your meridians and infusing it into your muscles. Once you can circulate qi throughout your entire body, you would be at level 1. A level 1 master is far stronger than ordinary people and can easily pull open a 250-pound bow. If an ordinary person wants to do it, many years of practice are required.”
Fang Jie nodded and said, “Ordinary people train their muscles, and cultivators gather qi.”
“You can say that.” Da Quan looked at Fang Jie and said, “But you are a unique person. At your age, your body can be compared to a low-tier level 2 master. I know that… Great General Luo Yao who wiped out the Shang Empire perhaps is the same type of person as you. He couldn’t cultivate, but he reached level 9 by purely tempering his body.”
“This isn’t strange,” Fang Jie explained, “Scientists did research on this and found that ordinary people’s muscles work in different directions and cancel out a ton of force. If all muscles unleashed power in one direction, thousands of pounds of force would be created.”
“Who are scientists?” Da Quan asked.
“Eh… a type of people who are scarier than level 9 masters.”
