Chapter 23: Exceptional Among Wastrels Part Two
Fang Jie took the heavy liquor gourd without hesitation and held it up with difficulty before chugging a mouthful. He felt like he drank fire, and his lips twitched as if he was in pain. Seeing this, the crippled old man nodded and looked at him with a softer expression.
“How come this liquor burns so much?” Fang Jie asked while exhaling.
“The northwest liquor at Fangu isn’t as authentic; it’s flavor is a little lacking. Therefore, I put a ton of pepper and fire grass roots in here. It is thrilling to drink now. You chugged without knowing anything about it. It is great that you didn’t spit it out. You are straightforward; you fit my taste.”
Fang Jie reached out his hand and asked for a water jug from Da Quan who was the groom. He only felt better after drinking more than half a jug of water. He asked, “Grandpa Luo, what are fire grass roots?”
“Fire grass grows in the extremely cold northern region, which is the 100,000 Mountains where the Northern Liao people live. Things from this extremely cold place are aggressive; they are great in soups and liquor. The men of Northern Liao love to place fire grass roots in liquor; people would feel warm after just taking a sip. Compared to Fangu, 100,000 Mountains of Northern Liao is much colder. A 100-year-old tree is only as tall as a man, and a 1,000-year-old tree can barely be used in construction. Just think about how cold it is. This fire grass is something that the men of North Liao can’t live without.”
“Women don’t need it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“This thing’s biggest use isn’t getting rid of the coldness.” The crippled old man smiled and showed his yellow teeth. “It is an aphrodisiac and supplement for men.”
Fang Jie smiled awkwardly and thought, “This old man seems to be at least 60 years old; I didn’t know he is interested in this.”
…
After returning to Beckon of the Red Sleeve, they didn’t dare to go through the front door as well. There were many people there.
Except for seniors and children who couldn’t walk, almost everyone came out and gathered before God Essence Shop, Red Sleeve Pavilion, and Li Xiaozong’s residence.
When they were still far away from Red Sleeve Pavilion, the crippled old man seemed impatient. He grabbed onto Fang Jie’s belt and jumped out of the horse-drawn carriage.
Fang Jie felt a strong wind blowing at him. When he opened his eyes, he was already in the backyard of Beckon of the Red Sleeve.
The backyard wasn’t big, so no plants could be grown here. However, Aunt Xi ordered not to touch the snow in here and only made a small path, making it look clean.
Due to the coldness, it seemed like the snow here wouldn’t melt away in a month.
The crippled old man was familiar with everything and led Fang Jie. When passing a room, they heard a series of quiet murmurs.
Fang Jie couldn’t hear what was being said, and the crippled old man smiled and explained, “This is Lady Xi’s room. You might be beat by her since you look so sketch.”
Fang Jie replied, “Everyone knows that Lady Xi is as gentle as water. How can she beat me?”
As soon as he finished speaking, a small rock flew out of the window. Before Fang Jie could say that it missed him by too much, it hit a pillar in the corridor before bouncing off and striking Fang Jie between his brows. Either Fang Jie was unlucky, or the calculation was too accurate.
Fang Jie instantly squatted and cried in pain. The crippled old man giggled and walked forward.
Fang Jie didn’t dare to stay here and quickly followed the crippled old man.
“Lady Xi sure has great techniques.” Fang Jie rubbed his head and said, “It hit me right between my brows.”
The crippled old man said, “Since Beckon of the Red Sleeve came to Fangu, many reckless people wanted to look see what Lady Xi looked like. For those men who tried to scale the wall, I would beat them half-dead. However, Lady Xi is kind and got rid of them by shooting small rocks.”
Fang Jie flattered, “She indeed has the heart of a bodhisattva.”

As soon as he finished, another small rock flew out of Xi Zhuxin’s room and directly hit Fang Jie at the back of his knee.
“How come this liquor burns so much?” Fang Jie asked while exhaling.
