Chapter 10: There Shouldn’t Be a Buddha Part Three
The official uniforms of royal guards were also different; they had a mythological beast embroidered on them. This beast seemed like a flying fish that had dragon-like head, cicada-like wings, and fish-like tails.
This was Eunuch Wu Peisheng, and he was the eunuch who held the ink brush for the Emperor inside the Royal Study. He was liked by the Emperor, and he traveled with the officials from the Court of Judicial Review and the Ministry of War under His Majesty’s order, touring the four circuits including River-North Circuit, River-West Circuit, Mountain-North Circuit, and Mountain-East Circuit. Jibei State was a part of Mountain-East Circuit, and it was the last stop of this tour.
After arriving at Jibei State, this eunuch first came to Sleeping Immortal Mountain to visit Li Yuanshan instead of entering Jibei City. As an important eunuch beside the Emperor, he knew how important this great general was in His Majesty’s mind, so he said those praising words to Li Yuanshan.
On the way, this eunuch was only respectful before the governors-general of the four circuits, and he was never this polite even before governors of each state who were all rank 3 officials.
“Eunuch Wu, you are too polite.”
Li Yuanshan was only 33 years old, and he was in the age when men became mature and steady. He was about 1.7 meters tall, and he wasn’t big. There were warriors who were fiercer than him. He was too thin in comparison to the Seven Tigers of Right Valiant Guard.
Since he had to accept the edict today, he was dressed in the formal uniform as a duke of feudal state which was a rank 1 first tier position. He had a fancy ridged hat, a dark-purple robe with a kirin embroidered on the chest. The ridged hat had eight ridges on it, which was the same as the royal kings and kings of state. This was the highest number of ridges that an official could get. After all, number nine could only be used by the emperors.
[TL Note: The official ranking was different from the noble ranking. The official ranking was divided into 9 ranks, and there were two tiers in each rank. The administrative officials and military officials followed the same structure even though they had different titles. The tier would only be mentioned in specific cases; only ranks would be mentioned in most cases.]
Rank 1 officials could only have seven ridges on their hats, rank 2 officials could only have six ridges, rank 3 to rank 5 officials could only have three ridges, and those below rank 5 couldn’t wear these ridged hats.
The uniforms of military officials were different from that of administrative officials. The biggest difference was that the military officials had fierce beasts embroidered on the chest of their uniforms, yet the administrative officials had birds engraved on theirs.
In most cases, rank 1 to rank 4 officials all wore purple robes, rank 5 to rank 7 wore cyan robes, and rank 8 and 9 officials wore green robes.
Since the inception of Great Sui, there weren’t military officials who became rank 1 officials. The great generals of the 16 Guards were all rank 3 first tier officials, and no one went above rank 3 in the last 100 years.
However, since Li Yuanshan was a duke of feudal state as well, he wore a purple robe and a eight-ridged hat, and a kirin was embroidered on the chest of his uniform. The uniforms of rank 2 military officials would be embroidered with lions, and that of rank 3 military officials would be embroidered with tigers.
On the other hand, rank 1 administrative officials could also wear purple robes, but they only had seven-ridged, and their uniforms were embroidered with immortal cranes. Rank 2 officials’ uniforms would be embroidered with a golden pheasants, and that of rank 3 officials would be embroidered with peacocks.
Li Yuanshan was a duke of feudal state, so he had to put on this attire. If anything was messed by, he could be accused of treason.
While walking, Li Yuanshan smiled at Wu Peisheng and said, “Since Eunuch Wu is here under His Majesty’s order, I will coordinate with you. Money, food, stored items, weapons, and horses… these account books are all ready. If you want to see them, I will send them over.”
“Duke of Tang, you are responsible, and I admire you!”
Wu Peisheng smiled, and the white powder on his face fell off a little. “Since Duke of Tang already invited me, it would seem like I’m slacking off if I refuse, and I wouldn’t be able to answer to His Majesty. However… the people from the Court of Judicial Review and the Ministry of War will look into the account books. I’m only here for show.”
Li Yuanshan turned around and nodded at the dozens of officials behind him. His eyes stayed on three people a bit longer, and those three people all shivered a little.
“The Court of Judicial Review sent three law enforcers who broke the realm. I also heard that the Ministry of War sent out a rune master who had broken the realm for many years. Why isn’t this person here?”
“Duke of Tang, where did you get this information?
Wu Peisheng laughed and said, “The five administrative officials that the Ministry of War sent are all knowledge people, and they are only here to check the account books. There isn’t a rune master who broke the realm. I have the name list of those officials who came for the tour. If you don’t believe me, you can look at the records. The Ministry of War only sent five people. One of them is the manager, and the other four are workers. There is no rune master.”
Then, Wu Peisheng lowered his voice and giggled, “Duke of Tang, you know that rune masters are all treasures.”
Li Yuanshan froze for a second and then laughed along, “Yeah, there aren’t many rune masters who broke the realm even in the military of Great Sui. If a rune master were sent to check the account books, this person would be too cheap.”
Wu Peisheng laughed and seemed happy for no reason.
“Please.” Li Yuanshan gestured and said, “This Sleeping Immortal Mountain was called Sleeping Buddha Mountain. After the inception of our Great Sui, our armies battled around and eventually claimed this land. When the First Emperor of Great Sui heard the name of this place, he was displeased and changed it to Sleeping Immortal Mountain. He said that there shouldn’t be a buddha inside Great Sui.”
