Chapter 7: The Law Enforcers from Chang’an, and the Spy from the Grassland Part Three

The animals that Yun’s Meat Shop sold weren’t domesticated livestock but the wild beasts in Wolf Breast Mountain Range that were as fierce as wolves. When there was less prey in the winter, these wild beasts would raid the livestock that were raised at the foot of the mountains.

After hunters killed these wild beasts, they would usually take these animals to Yun’s Meat Shop.

“Quickly go in; it is quite cold out here,” the dull Su Tugou said with a smile.

“Brother Tugou, you kill animals everyday. Do you have nightmares?” Fang Jie suddenly asked.

Su Tugou put down the knife, hesitated for a moment, and replied earnestly, “Perhaps I’ve killed too many. Even the ghosts of the fiercest beasts don’t dare to enter my dream. If they do, I will just butcher them again.”

The tone was casual, but the words shocked Fang Jie.

“That makes sense.” Fang Jie nodded as if he understood something, and then he walked into the shop.

“Little Brother Fang…” Su Tugou suddenly stopped Fang Jie. After a moment of hesitation, he said, “You should drink more liquor these days.”

“Why?” Fang Jie asked.

Su Tugou smiled and replied, “It is cold.”

Fang Jie pointed out his middle finger and said, “Is the sales of your liquor dropping?”

When Fang Jie entered the shop, he didn’t see the pity in Su Tugou’s eyes.

Su Tugou squatted down to continue deskinning the animals before him, and he murmured, “It is just that you spent a lot of money in my shop, and I don’t want to lose a big customer. Who has such a vicious method? Drinking more liquor will help your blood flow smoother in your body. Otherwise…”

While Fang Jie asked for a pot of meat stew, Li Xiaozong was welcoming a guest in his study.

This guest was in a leather robe, and the hat with fur on it covered his face. He only took off the thick hat after entering the room and placed it beside the brazier. Soon, white vapor appeared.

This man was thin, and his eyes sat deep in his eye sockets. His cheekbones were extruding a little, making him look like a monkey. However, this man kept a goatee, looking a little ridiculous.

Li Xiaozong didn’t dare to laugh. He handed over a cup of tea with respect and then stood on the side with his head lowered.

“Although you are only an distant member of the Li Family, General still values you.”

That man took the teacup and glanced at Li Xiaozong. He sighed in disappointment and said, “So I had to travel hundreds of kilometers in the cold to remind you. The people from the Court of Judicial Review and the Ministry of War left Chang’an about a month and a half ago, and they dealt with more than a dozen cases. They had killed four people who were rank 5 majors and one rank 4 colonel. His Majesty is really angry this time; you have to know the situation.”

“You should know that His Majesty hates corruption, especially greed and corruption in the military. If your case floats out, you will die for sure. Among these law enforcers, there are at least three people at top-tier level 6, and there is a rune master who broke the realm ten years ago.”

“I don’t dare to think that I will be lucky.” Li Xiaozong lowered his head with a pale face.

Going above level 5 was called “breaking the realm”, and those on and above level 6 would be greatly valued by the military. Although Li Xiaozong broke the realm about a year ago, he couldn’t block the joint attack of three level 6 masters, let alone that there was a rune master who could cause him headaches.

“I learned that you became greedy because of someone named Fang Jie?”

“Yeah.”

“General heard that a spy of Mongo-Yuan snuck into Fangu City and tried to bribe the soldiers of Fangu. Major Li Xiaozong discovered this scheme… General will explain this matter to the law enforcers from the Court of Judicial Review and the Ministry of War honestly.”

“I…” Li Xiaozong swallowed his saliva with difficulty and said bitterly, “I got it.”
