Chapter 2: The”Mensao” Boss Part Three

The Mongo-Yuan Empire that suffered more casualties was unwilling to accept this, and Mong Kuo who was known as Heavenly Khagan personally reinforced his military with 200,000 gold-tent cavalrymen. Later, they ran into First Emperor Yang Jian of Great Sui who also came with his elite soldiers.

[TL Note: Khagan was the title of the ruler of the Mongo-Yuan Empire.]

The 100,000 elite soldiers of Great Sui met the 200,000 gold-tent cavalrymen of Mongo-Yuan, and the former used the various formations created with spears and shields, obtaining three consecutive victories, forcing Mong Kuo to the west of Wolf Breast Mountain Range. This war was a huge shame in the eyes of the Royal Family of Mongo-Yuan.

After that, the two empires battled for six years. Mongo-Yuan couldn’t redeem themselves, and the military of Great Sui that was young at the time couldn’t reach the grassland. Therefore, the two empires signed a covenant at Wolf Breast Mountain Range. With this mountain range as the border, the area to the west was the territory of Mongo-Yuan, and the area to the east was the territory of Great Sui.

After that, there was Fangu built on this side of the mountain range and a stone city named Nirvana built on the other side.

Close to 100 years had passed since the signing of this covenant, and both sides maintained relative peace. However, all the past and current emperors of both sides wanted to defeat the other and earn the reputation.

Great Sui focused on agriculture, so it lacked leather, jade, and livestock, especially warhorses that would allow them to venture into the grassland.

On the other hand, Mongo-Yuan lacked iron, salt, silk, tea, and unique liquor of Great Sui. Since their infantrymen were too weak, they couldn’t do anything to Great Sui that had many cities.

The soldiers in Fangu City and the wolf cavalrymen in Nirvana City all wanted to conquer each other so that they could show-off. However, three years ago, Emperor Yang Yi, the sixth emperor of Great Sui, and Khagan Mong Ge, the 30th khagan of Mong-Yuan, had a meeting, and Fangu City had a new identity – the market.

The merchants in Great Sui could move the items that the grassland needed to Fangu City to trade for leather, jade, and livestock that the herdsmen from the grassland were willing to offer. The market would open on the 1st, 8th, 11th, 18th, 21st, and 28th of every month, and the herdsmen who wanted to trade for salt, silk, and tea would line-up outside the gate of the city on these days, regardless of the weather.

In the eyes of the herdsmen, the soldiers of Great Sui in Fangu City were annoying, but they didn’t dare to cause trouble. General Li Xiaozong was a just and strict person. Any herdsman who dared to cause trouble would be whipped 30 times for small offenses. For those heavy offenders, their heads would be chopped off and hung on flag poles to warn others. That was why the herdsmen hated and feared him.

However, if the merchants of Great Sui dared to cheat or defraud the herdsmen, they would be punished as well. Just like before, small offenses would result in 30 whips, and big offenses would result in the death penalty. Therefore, the herdsmen respected and loved him.

The only thing that needed to be clarified was that those who got whipped 30 times didn’t live for more than five days.

The whip that was used for punishment was full of cash coins made mostly from copper, and one whip would result in big wounds. Therefore, the difference between getting whipped 30 times and being decapitated was that the people who were punished with the first method would die with a full corpse.

Li Xiaozong said that no one could break the rules of Fangu. If those herdsmen stopped coming here, hundreds of thousands of silver taels would be gone, and it was something unacceptable.

It was February 8th, the day that the market was going to open. The herdsmen waited at the gate of the city patiently, paid the taxes, and entered the city. Then, they quickly went to trade for the things that they needed.

In the afternoon, Fangu got more bustling. The herdsmen who had money and merchants who made money would rush into the tavern, pleasure quarters, and gambling house to enjoy life.

Therefore, when the market opened, the girls in the pleasure quarters hated being sick and unable to earn the money from the patrons.

The herdsmen liked the silk and tea from Great Sui, but they liked the girls here even more since the latter was pretty and had fair skin.

Although there were beauties on the grassland, most of them were exposed in the sun since they had to work, so their skin was darker, and their bodies were bigger. Although they had an exotic beauty in the eyes of people of Great Sui, there was no comparison between them and the girls in pleasure quarters in Great Sui in the eyes of the herdsmen.

These herdsmen were all generous; they wouldn’t leave Fangu with excess money. They only needed the merchandise.

Great Sui’s lowest-level currency was called “Wu Zhu”, and they were cash coins. The herdsmen had no use of cash coins in the Mongo-Yuan Empire.

Therefore, the girls in the pleasure quarters liked these herdsmen better than the merchants of Great Sui since the latter was cheap.

In fact, many herdsmen’s primary reason for coming to Fangu wasn’t trading but to enjoy themselves in the three buildings.

The so-called three buildings were Guest-Prosper Dwell, Beckon of the Red Sleeve, and Gold Essence Shop. One was the tavern, one was the pleasure quarters, and one was the gambling house.
