4 Middle of Nowhere

Sia zips up her jumpsuit, slips on her socks, and boots. She shoves her black gloves, safety goggles, and respirator into her deep pockets. After a couple of hours, the Wanderers returned most of Sia's stuff. They still did not return her keys or smartphone. She doesn't have a need for the keys, but the smartphone still might work. If she can call for help this nightmare could finally be over.

She walks out of the bare room into a hallway that has huge holes in the walls that show you the world outside. She worries that the floor might give out beneath her when she makes it to some stairs. The railings are missing. When she finally gets outside, she blinks at all the people moving around the area. It's not as crowded as a city block during the morning commute, but it's definitely still bustling with activity. Everyone has a job and is doing it.

"Come. I would like to introduce you to the other Leaders," Luka says from behind Sia.

She flinches and turns to the older man, "Huh?"

Conti is already walking off in a direction. Sia follows and after a few minutes, she is sat before the three leaders of the Wanderers. One woman and two men in the same colored rough material sit on stools in a small, dim shack.

"Where do you come from?"

Sia doesn't see who asks the question but sits quietly, wondering if she should tell them the truth. Or maybe just tell them some of the truth and…

"Washington City."

This surprises the Leaders because Washington City was one of the first places targeted at the beginning of the war.

"Are you all thriving there?"

"Last time I was there everyone was fine."

Conti pulls out her janitor keys. It is a ring of around 20 keys. "What are these used to unlock?"

"…"

"Are these important to your group? Do you think they are looking for you both?"

"I use those for when I'm cleaning. I need to unlock different things and have access in order to clean places without disturbing people."

They don't believe her. As if someone so healthy and unblemished would be used as a common servant. Her palms barely have calluses, her skin is smooth and soft. The sun has not beaten down and burnt her. She is terracotta, and her short hair is healthy and cut in a neat, fashionable hairstyle. She is definitely among those upper class in her settlement. She has been trained to avoid telling the truth.

"This phone is a model we saw much of before the war. How did you come to obtain it?"

"I was given it."

"How do you keep it working?"

"Charge it?"

This is another luxury people no longer have in most settlements. Many people no longer remember the comforts of the world before the war. At least two of the three leaders remember intimately the pleasures of before. This woman's colony must have many resources and powerful allies.

"So, you have generators that work and power your settlement?"

"Sure?" Sia is confused.

She is trying to give them the bare bones of her situation without seeming like a huge liar. If she can convince these people she is just a regular janitor who got lost maybe they will let her go on her way to…wherever. She hasn't planned much on where she can go from here. She doesn't know where here is.

"How long have you been in this area?"

"A while."

"Where are your companions?"

"I don't know. I don't understand how I got here. I don't remember."

"It must be your head injury. We can have someone look at that."

"No! ...I mean that's okay."

Conti raises a brow at that and side eyes the other two leaders. Her colony must have very qualified doctors. She doesn't trust being looked after by anyone she sees as inferior. The other leaders come to the same conclusion as Conti. This colony would be a godsend for their people. They must convince her to create a connection between their two factions. This could be very lucrative for their group in particular.

Sia sits quietly as the leaders talk amongst themselves. She sees her items that are placed in the space between them and lifts the phone. No one stops her, so she sits back and unlocks the device before going to her contacts and trying to call. The phone has no signal. Sighing, she looks at all her other applications. Everything is there. All her photos and videos are still there. All her downloaded music is there, but she can't connect to some of the applications that require WiFi.

'I wonder what the brain-computer connects to…'

The council decides to convince her to stay with them for a few days before asking her to guide them to her colony and foster a treaty between the two groups. Of course, they do not tell her all of that right then. They tell her she is welcome to rest with them, then Luka stands to escort her back to her room.

She pockets her phone and leaves the keys with them. It's not like she needs them. This is taken as another sign of how wealthy she is. The metal keys could be melted down into something else or traded for water and food. Her colony must be overflowing with such material.

The leaders have a can and water sent to Sia for dinner. She eats the contents of the can but doesn't drink any of the water. It doesn't look or smell like what she is used to.

"Bleh," she says as she sees the dirt sloshing along the bottom of the plastic jug.

The next day, a tall lean woman tells Sia to follow her. Sia follows along quietly, afraid to question the stern looking woman. They walk by destitute buildings and tents until they get to a dirty Jeep with a map laid across the front. The leaders and a young man are surrounding the wrinkly, taped map.

"Most of these routes don't exist anymore. Some of these cities are definitely gone, but we haven't passed through anything near Washington City. It's past the other side of the wasteland. We stay to this side and along the edge. All the traders we encounter are from this side."

Sia lived in Washington City but takes the train for an hour to reach Shine Avenue station in River City. ExplorerTech Industries was located at the edge of River City. It seems that the entire city is now a part of the wastelands that people are afraid to travel.

"Do you recognize any of these places?" the young man, Eli, asks Sia.

"I uh...no. I don't. I just clean and organize stuff. No one expects me to use a compass and lead them anywhere...where are we now?" Sia tries to jokingly explain her position but is met with serious faces all around.

Eli points to their position on the map. "About here."

Sia examines the map and sees it was made in 2017. It has this area marked with rivers and lakes and a mountain range in the distance. A mountain she remembers noticing sometimes while traveling to work. A mountain that is no longer anywhere around them. There are no buildings to block it from sight. It just no longer is rooted in the background. What type of blast can demolish an entire mountain?

She picks up the map and turns it around and around.

'Where the heck can I go from here?' Sia thinks hysterically to herself.

If everywhere is as desolate as here. How will she survive?

TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP UPLOADING…

A map comes into view overlapping the map she is holding. Sia jumps and slams the map back on the Jeep.

"I need to brainstorm this. I'm going to take a walk," she announces tensely and marches off in a random direction.

The leaders nod and motion for Eli to follow her at a distance. Sia's eyes are seeing a clear blue map with green lines and tiny details etched into it. There is a compass and a red dot that is moving as she power walks down the sandy street. When she stops moving the red dot stops moving.

"Are you a satellite? Am I connected to a satellite?"

Sia turns herself into a circle and looks around. She doesn't see anyone nearby. She runs to find a flat surface to focus on and stops in a destroyed building that has an entire back wall still intact.

Squinting at the wall she raises her hands and yells "Enlarge!"

Nothing happens.

"Zoom in!" she calls out placing her hands close together.

Nothing happens.

'Why won't it zoom in?' she thinks before the neon blue map zooms into details at her location.

She grabs at her head and cackles at the wall.

"I'm like Inspector Wrench-It! Except instead of having gadgets in my head, I has a supercomputer!" She puts her hands on her hips and laughs loudly.

"This power shall not be wasted on me!" she pridefully says to the sky.

Eli watches her from the second landing of a nearby building, confused.

2035

Priya sorts through ammunition while sitting in the shade. She writes into a small crumpled notebook and pushes pieces out of a bag onto a trash bag that has been laid out over the dusty earth. She doesn't look up as green and yellow sneakers walk towards her.

Ika crouches beside the ammunition laid out on the trash bag and turns one over, inspecting it. He slowly rises and waves it at Priya before pocketing it and walking away. He keeps his blue hood up as he walks along the perimeter of the camp. The weapon strapped and hanging over his shoulder bounces a bit as he briskly strides towards high ground. When he reaches the designated lookout spot, he sits down on the hill and shoves his hands into his hoodie pockets. The hood darkens his pale freckled face as he leans forward and glowers at the camp below.

He ignores the footsteps that are approaching him.

"I know you don't approve of us bringing these people along, but I felt it was the right thing to do."

He grimaces at those words.

"If we have the power to help someone without giving up our own humanity, then we should. You know they would have slaughtered these people," Sid says while standing beside a damaged old tree.

Silence. Ika refuses to continue this reccurring conversation. He's tired of Sid preaching his ideas to him like he's a child. Sid glares at the silent man and goes back to picking at the bark of the tree. The silence continues for a few minutes before Sid loudly sighs and exclaims, "All they have are each other! They don't have any resources that the Savages could come back to check up on in exchange for their lives. They'd kill them for the clothes on their back and take their children for labor. You know this. You know how these people work!"

Ika slowly stands and looks at Sid before pointing down at the camp below. Sid's eyes follow.

"Those people down there are already dead. Don't make this about them. You know why you did this. You can't fix this. None of this. No amount of good deeds will bring them back. They're already dead."

Sid flinches at Ika's cold words.

"Sacrificing yourself, that's on you, but if you don't come back. My men and I are gone. Your little fantasy quest is coming to an end, and if this lab doesn't have any answers...we're done."

Sid's smile is bittersweet as he says, "I understand that. We all understand that. I appreciate you tolerating this side trip for so long. The lab will definitely be our best shot," He takes off his hat and runs a hand through his hair, "It's not a..."

Ika scoffs and walks deeper into the deadwood around them. Sid's eyes widen but he doesn't follow the vexed individual.

"You're the boss!" Sid hears Ika derisively yell before vanishing among the dense undergrowth.

2034

"So, I think we worked our way through here, then around here was where I was attacked," Sia explains to the leaders and Eli.

Eli looks up from the map. "Was it Savages?! We haven't seen any Savages around these lands in weeks. They passed the peak a while ago. Why would they double back?"

Sia shrugs. "I don't know who attacked us. I just know they uh...separated me from everyone else. I got away from my attacker and lost my way in the wastelands. I don't know how long I ran before I collapsed where you all found me."

Eli looks to the Wanderer leaders, and they explain that a Hunter and apprentice had stumbled upon her.

"Where were you headed?" Eli asks.

Sia starts sweating as she gets to that part of her story. She doesn't know what exists or not. Who was bombed off the face of the earth, and what governments have survived the war they say happened?

"The old ExplorerTech Industries headquarters in Coldstone."

Eli's eyebrows scrunch together as he turns the map round and round.

"I don't think I've seen that on here. Where is that?"

Sia waits for Eli to lean away from the map before pulling it over to her side of the car hood and pointing to an area at the edge of the map.

"Our map is larger than this one. Coldstone is an entirely different district from all of these. Where did you get this?"

"I don't know. Some old almanac someone salvaged. This is all we usually carry with us." He directs his last comment at the leaders.

Eli folds up his map and slips it into the back pocket of his jeans.

"Well, we're going to be moving on in a day or so. Do you have our shipment ready for us?" Eli says to the Leaders.

"It's already been packaged and stacked near your vehicles. We'll be leaving this sector in a few days' time," the female leader replies.

The stern woman from before appears to escort Sia back to her room. When she gets to her room she looks at the entrance and pulls over the rickety table to block it. Not having a door makes her nervous. At least if anyone comes through they will make noise hitting that. She sits back in her corner and closes her eyes.

'Time to get to know you better, lil puter,' She thinks while scrunching up her face.

SYNTHETIC INTELLIGENCE DEVELOPER

"I wanna see what you can do."

She feels that sickening vertigo feeling once again, before reaching out to catch herself and opening her eyes to a white hallway. She stumbles a couple steps before straightening up and shivering with fright.

"This didn't happen last time."

IMMERSIVE MODE ACTIVATED

She touches the white walls and is shocked by how real it all feels. She walks down the hallway and sees many doorways. Some of them have words of them. Navigation, Sanitation, Librarian, Juvenile...She goes back to the Navigation door and opens it to darkness.

"Uh. What? ...What is inside?"

There is silence until a loud computerized female voice speaks.

REQUEST INFORMATION USING SEARCH TERMS AND PHRASES

"Search: Coldstone and New Cinalia?" Sia asks the darkness.

The darkness within the room disappears as a blue map appears. The map lights up the ground, and Sia takes an experimental step inside the room. It all feels stable. She releases the doorway and looks for the old ExplorerTech Industries Headquarters. It seems to still be there; though probably abandoned.

"Is this map the most recent image of the Earth?"

AFFIRMATIVE

"Satellites still exist out in space?"

AFFIRMATIVE

"Can I get an image of America?"

The blue map changes from the left to the right until showing a map of the entire United States of America. Random patches of land seem to be charred. Areas along the coasts are randomly blacked out of the satellite imaging.

"Search: New Jersey and America."

65% of the state is gone. Sia's eyes water as she sees the destruction.

"What happened there?"

"Without warning, multiple blasts targeting nuclear power plants along the Eastern coast of America were released. We still do not know how many people have survived this devastating event. We urge anyone with information to call----" A female news anchor's voice is projecting into the space.

Sia jumps at the change in audio. "When was that broadcasted?"
