101 How Come They're Different?
Vampire babies had certain fundamental differences from earth fairy babies. Ruby's experience living in the same house as infant Flora was leagues apart from the one she had with her son.
She and Ash had come up with appropriate names for both genders and races during the pregnancy. Because she gave birth to a male vampire they ended up going with the name Vesper, which meant 'evening star' in Latin.
Vesper didn't require any diaper changes because vampires didn't use the bathroom. Their food source was absorbed directly by their bodies with no waste. That was nice but it was also strange feeding him bottles full of imitation blood.
He woke up only once in the middle of the day needing to be fed and otherwise slept right through sunlight hours, though he did nap frequently during the night as well. Deciding who would take care of him when was simple enough based on sleep schedules.
The baby's nursery was right next door to his parents' room and after too many instances of Ash irritably being woken in the middle of the day by his hungry cries because the fairies were outside, Ruby started setting a timer on her phone around the time he normally woke up so she would be ready to intercept with a bottle of blood.
Flora thought Vesper was cute but boring for the first decade or so of his life because he did little but eat and sleep. He started reaching milestones such as rolling over, sitting up, and crawling once he was six years old and by the time he was ten he was able to say everyone's names (Mama, Dada, and Fo) and several other necessary words like "bud" (blood).
He was capable of largely normal speech by age twenty-eight, which Ash said was a real accomplishment by vampire standards. As he grew it became more difficult to manage sleep schedules because he was a mama's boy and frequently wanted Ruby in the middle of the night.
"Daddy, I want Mommy to read to me," Vesper said with a pout as he climbed into his father's lap around 3 AM. "Why cant she?"
Ash sighed. Deterring him got harder over time because he was too little to understand the fundamental differences between him and the fairies in his family. "I've told you before; Mommy has to sleep at night like we sleep in the day."
At this point the family shared waking hours of approximately 3 PM to 1 AM but that didn't account for Vesper's sleep schedule as a growing boy. He typically slept from 7 AM to 5 PM and had naps around 9 PM and 2 AM. It was rough for the little guy to wake up from his second nap and not be able to see his mother because she was always the one he wanted when he was sleepy.
Ash did his best to distract him but wasn't always successful. Sometimes his wife's sleep was disturbed and she was never very happy about it but always put on a smile for the baby's sake.
"Why?" Vesper asked sullenly. "Why do Mommy and Flora sleep now?"
Because of his sleep schedule he only saw them for a combined total of about six hours a night and he didn't like that one bit. They were typically inside for the night by the time he woke up the first time so he hadn't yet been forced out into the sun to spend time with them but he would once he was older and didn't need naps anymore.
The Mayhews had a lot of long discussions about how to explain the differences between fairies and vampires once their son was old enough to understand and ask questions. He had only recently started asking any and they were largely related to sleep and flying.
Ash was very patient with his repetitive questions. "Mommy and Flora are fairies, remember? They like being in the sun so they sleep at night."
Ruby and Flora frequently went outside at night and did aerial acrobatics to amuse the little vampire when the weather was nice. He was always enthralled by it and had started asking when he was going to get his wings, which had triggered the first discussion about how fairies were different from vampires.
Vesper didn't quite seem to get it. To him, Mommy and Daddy were simply Mommy and Daddy so he expected them all to be the same.
He had taken Ruby's ever changing appearance very well because it was all he had known from the time he was born. Once he asked if he was going to get to change colors too and she had to explain that only she was like that.
He had been disappointed to say the least but ultimately ended up smiling and saying "You're special, Mommy! That's so cool!" That made her so happy that she picked him up and twirled him around in the air, to his great delight.
Vesper was understanding about some things but less so about others. Especially when it inconvenienced him like right now.
Too young to realize how insane his parentage actually was, he wanted his family to be all together all the time. Ash knew that feeling; sleep had long been one of the biggest issues to overcome in his relationship with his wife.
Both of them worried about how Vesper would react when he was old enough to understand that mixed race fae families were largely considered impossible. Nobody outside their family but Blair even knew about him officially.
The witches in the Juneau Coven were aware that there was a vampire child living with Ash because of his increased blood pill purchases but they had no idea who his mother was. Vesper was too little for his glamour to have developed yet so he couldn't go out on pill runs with him either.
The baby vampire's lip quivered. "How come they're different? I want us all to be awake together!"
Ash sighed and mussed his son's hair. "I know, Ves. I know. But that is the way things are. You'll get used to it someday like I did."
He pouted and glared mutinously for several minutes before giving up and bringing his favorite children's book over to his father instead. This happened eventually almost every time he got upset Ruby couldn't read to him but that didn't make the whole thing any less exhausting.
"Read it, Daddy," Vesper requested.
A sucker for his family, Ash couldn't turn him down even though he had read this book fifteen times in the past week already. At times like this he really wished Ruby was awake to help handle their son.
