100 Interracial Fae Children

Golden light shone around their entwined arms and when it faded away there were marks left behind on all four of their wrists. Overlapping double infinity symbols representing their marriage contract.

Symbols matched the color of a fae's magic. Flint and Lily's and her parents' had been green. The Breezes' were storm cloud gray. And every married werewolf she ever met had brown symbols.

Ruby had never met a mismatched elemental fairy couple who got married before so she had never seen a set that wasn't the same before now. Hers were gold and Ash's were red. The marks were small—not much bigger than a blood seal—but it proved that they had actually done it.

Every married couple she knew had followed the human tradition of the female taking the male's last name because it helped them blend in to human society better. She wanted to do it for a different reason.

Ash had been saying for years that Ruby (and by extension, Flora) was the only family he had left. It was fitting that she made the change now as she became his family in a magically binding way.

She would have to get Blair to help her change her human documentation from a distance since she was the only witch who knew about their relationship. It would be inconvenient but such a small gesture would make her husband so happy.

Her husband, who was now admiring his magical seals with a wide disbelieving grin on his face. Ruby thought her heart might burst at the very sight of him so she pounced and wrapped herself around him as fully as she could to get the most out of their hug.

"I love you Ash!" she said fervently before peppering his face with kisses.

The corners of his eyes crinkled with joy and his fangs gleamed in the moonlight as he beamed at her. "I love you too."

Things didn't change much at first aside from no longer having to try and hide things from Flora because she already knew. When she saw the seals on their wrists all she had to say was "it's about time!" but Ruby could tell she was pleased.

The transition from lovers to husband and wife wasn't a terribly noticeable one except perhaps in the aura surrounding the two of them. Ash seemed happier than Ruby had ever seen him; it was as if he was completely at peace with the world.

She was able to relax and fully enjoy herself too now that she knew he wasn't going anywhere. It was really nice.

To everyone's great surprise, Ruby found herself pregnant shortly before Flora's 127th birthday. None of them had any idea what the baby would end up being because they hadn't thought that interracial fae children were even possible.

Witches were a special case because their entire race was female. They tended to be born of a witch and an elf but it wasn't like they were half elf. Each one was born solely with the characteristics and powers of a witch.

Children born from two different elemental fairies always only had one of their attributes rather than a mixture so Ruby couldn't help but wonder if this would be similar. Would they have an earth fairy or a vampire? Or some unnatural combination of the two?

She had never thought she would be a mother and had long ago contented herself simply with raising Flora. She was more than a little terrified of having her own child and not knowing what to do.

Ash was completely stunned at first because he hadn't expected this either. Then he got really emotional because he didn't think he would have children of his own centuries before he even met his wife.

Flora was curious how things would turn out but too old to get jealous over the prospect of having to share her parental figures. She tried to hide it but occasionally her excitement slipped out when they were talking about the baby too.

Fae pregnancies lasted three years instead of nine months like human ones. As the due date approached, Ruby grew more and more frantic about who would deliver the baby. It wasn't like she trusted any midwives to keep a secret about an interracial fae child.

Blair was convinced to abandon her post and come visit because she actually did have some experience delivering babies. She stayed with them for a week and a half before Ruby went into labor.

Flora and Ash each took one of her hands as Blair urged her to push as she leaned back in the air with a sheet covering her. Lying on a bed would have crushed her wings.

The younger fairy was fascinated by the process to the point that Ruby briefly wondered through the haze in her brain if she might be interested in training in fae midwifery someday. She had always loved learning new things.

After much effort and encouragement from all three of the other fae in the room, a small cry was heard. Blair sliced the umbilical cord with magic and examined the baby closely as she cleaned it up.

"Well what do you know! It's a boy. And a vampire. Though I've never had to clarify what race a baby is when it's born before. Congratulations you two!"

Ash broke down dry sobbing and Ruby wearily patted his arm. She was pretty sure she knew what he was feeling right now. He wasn't the only Mayhew vampire left anymore and that was bittersweet.

Blair handed the baby to his mother after swaddling him in a tiny blanket and she stared down at him. She had never seen a vampire baby before. He had the same milk white skin as his father, a tuft of black hair, and no fangs. And he was absolutely beautiful.

"He looks just like you," Flora stated the obvious, directing her comment at Ash.

"Yeah," he said thickly. "He does. Are you okay with that, Ruby?"

"Why wouldn't I be? I married one handsome fae," she replied cheekily. That was the least of her concerns. How in the world was an earth fairy supposed to raise a vampire? She knew absolutely nothing about how vampires grew!

At the very least Ash would. He didn't talk about his coven much over the years but he had mentioned they had a surprisingly high birthrate. He had an infant nephew at the time of the slaughter as well so he was no stranger to vampire children.

Ruby desperately hoped he knew was he was doing because she was going into this completely blind. She loved her son already—how could she not looking at that adorable little face?—but she had no idea what to do with him.
