Chapter 231 His Sincerity
Not only Edwin felt sorry for himself but also for the man facing him. He had risked his life for the sake of his sister while Edwin was still unable to get together with the woman he truly loved.
“Steve, I know it is cruel for you,” said the man with honest compassion. “You have to take my place and look after Bella as if she was your sister. You know how much this means to me.”
Edwin could see how stubborn the old man was. He has wasted his entire life looking for his long lost sister. Even though he had never experienced love in his life, he deemed it as something not worth one’s attention. Family ties were the only thing that mattered.
Having sensed Edwin’s doubt, the old man squeezed Edwin’s hand.
“You are the only person I trust in the world. Please take care of Bella for me.”
“I can only be happy if Bella is happy. If Charles does anything to harm Bell I will not hesitate to kill him.”
He could remember Bella when they took that photo fifteen years ago in the snow. At that time, she had warned him that he would catch a cold if he kept rolling over the snow. He was hoping she would remember that when looking at the album but the only thing she could do was stare blankly at the photo.
Maybe it was better this way. If her memories ever came back, so would the sorrow and this was something she did not deserve. Bella did not need to bear the sadness of the loss of her beloved parents.
Edwin returned to his villa after leaving the mountaintop. although his residence could not compare with Charles’s or Nick’s, it was a nice little spot with a good view ideal for romantic evenings.
He dismissed for the night all of his five servants and went to his room. The moment he opened the door the scent of the sea came to his nostrils.
A sign that Nick was in the room.
“When did you get here?” he asked.
He turned on the lights and instead of Nick saw Charles standing in the middle of the room.
Edwin raised his eyebrows. He surely wasn’t waiting for the Ruler of the Sea to show up uninvited!
Edwin took off his coat, loosened the tie and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt.
“What brings you here?” he asked.
“Who are you? Where is the real Edwin Beck? Have you and Nick locked him up somewhere?”
Edwin was taken aback by those words. He did not expect that Charles would discover the truth so quickly.
“I do not know what you are talking about. The only thing I know is that I will never make her cry,” said Edwin.
“That’s because you do not deserve her crying for you.” His face changed cold and a gust of wind hit Edwin’s face.
“Why don’t you try being honest for once? What do you plan to do after acquiring Bell’s trust? You’d better confess now or else you shall suffer a lot.”
Edwin was not afraid of him at all. He crossed his arms around his chest and laughed, “I know well that merpeople are not allowed to kill people after leaving the Kingdom of the Sea.”
“I can always hire a paid assassin,” said Charles and gave Edwin a cold smile. “Now tell me the truth.”
“I have already told you but you don’t want to believe me. I am the real Edwin Beck.”
In the far distance, the sky slowly began to change. Dark clouds appeared and the sound of thunder came to his ears. The villa shook back and forth every time a flash of lightning pierced the darkness.
A large crack appeared on the window and a loud sound came from the roof. It was as if something was splitting in two. Smaller cracks appeared on the wall.
“Do you think this is my only house?” said Edwin. “If you want to bring it down, please enjoy yourself. But you got to ask yourself first. What will Bella think if she finds out that you brought down her brother’s home?”
“I will make sure that she never finds out.”
“And I will make sure the gossip reaches her ears.”
His reply took Charles by surprise. He found this tone of mockery so interesting. Charles cured up his lips. “You do not treat me with enough sincerity. How can I trust you?”
“If you doubt my sincerity let me ask you one thing. Why am I allowing the one I care so much about to stay with you? If it wasn’t for your powers I would never have permitted such a thing. I may not like you but I admit you’re doing a good job in keeping her safe from the evil clutch of Nathan Spencer. So you had better keep on doing a good job or else I will take her away from you.”
“Nathan Spencer is the one who had your parents killed?”
“What does it matter? Given your relationship with his daughter, you will never make him your enemy,” muttered Edwin.
“What do you know about my relationship with Katherine?” said Charles.
“I know that she is to become your wife.”
“My relation with Katherine is merely a formality for old time’s sake.”
“You want to tell me that you don’t love her?”
“That does not mean I want to see her meeting the end of a beating stick. You must keep this in mind if you intend to harm her.”
“Steve, I know it is cruel for you,” said the man with honest compassion. “You have to take my place and look after Bella as if she was your sister. You know how much this means to me.”
