Chapter 220 Losing Face
Katherine almost jumped up and quickly covered her mouth and listened to her father carefully, making sure that no one was outside the door.
“There is vital evidence which seems to point that Bella is the missing heir to the Beck family,” said her father.
“Dad, are you sure?”
“I think so. After reading Edwin’s public statement, I ran a blood test and I discovered there is a ninety-nine percent match to the Beck family DNA. This shows Bella is the daughter of Leo. She never died in that car accident.”
“What should I do if Charles finds out Bella is the person who saved his life fifteen years ago?”
“Be patient my daughter. I have already promised I will take care of this problem.”
“Dad, I beg you. Kill her, please. I can't let Charles know that Bella was the person who saved him. Did you know that Charles has asked me about my handkerchief several times? He is starting to suspect my story is not true.”
“I didn't expect Charles would doubt your words but don’t worry too much. It’s impossible for Bella to remember anything, so it’s his word against yours. He may have occasional doubts but there is no proof that it happened otherwise.”
Katherine happily kissed the other side of the phone.
“Dad, you are the best, you are so smart but there is one more thing you need to check for me. Whether Charles has an illegitimate son.”
“Why do you ask so?” asked Earl in a serious tone. Katherine told him everything she knew about Brandon.
“If he really is Charles’s illegitimate son then we have one more weapon to use against Bella. We can easily trash her reputation.”
Katherine was pleased to hear so. She hung up and went to the dining hall where she found Charles.
“My father is going to come over,” she said while they were eating. Charles ignored her words so she kept blabbering.
“He read Edwin’s online statement and wants to come over to help. After all, we used to have a very good relationship with Uncle Leo, and now that Edwin is coming back I think we should provide some help.”
When she spoke, Katherine would shoot side-glances to Bella who didn’t seem to have any idea about what they were talking about. Earl was right. Bella had no memory of what had happened fifteen years ago.
Katherine laid down the knife and fork she was holding and looked at Charles with an innocent look.
“My darling, can you help me check where Beck is living now? I want to pay him a visit for old times sake. Since we grew up together, I ought to check on him.”
Hearing that Katherine had grown up with Edwin made Bella sad for some inexplicable reason. She didn’t like Katherine, but she had a good impression of Edwin. Although there wasn’t anything sexual going on between them, she didn’t want to believe Edwin and Katherine were good friends.
“We don’t need to check that. Bell and Beck are friends.”
Katherine almost choked upon hearing Charles call Bella that way. He had never used her nickname during the past five years. He only called her Katherine.
Katherine tightly clenched her fist under the table, but she kept on smiling as she looked at Bella.
“Is Edwin really your good friend? Can you give me his phone number? We grew up together, but I haven’t seen him for over ten years.”
Bella looked up Edwin’s number in her contact list and flashed the screen in front of Katherine. Although she didn’t like Katherine, she wanted to do something for Edwin. After all, he had been helping her all the time.
“Can I call him right now?”
“Why not?” said Bella.
The reason Katherine had asked this question was to study Charles’s reaction. Contrary to her expectations, there was no sudden outburst of jealousy. Which only meant one thing.
Charles did not care about her in the same way he cared about Bella.
She pressed the button to call Edwin’s number and turned on the loudspeaker. Maybe Charles would change his mind if he heard Edwin’s voice.
A low-pitched voice came from the other end of the line to which Katherine responded with a saccharine voice.
“Is this Edwin? I’m Katherine Spenser. Do you remember me?”
“I do.”
The quick reply and the tone of his voice showed that he had no interest in talking with Katherine but she didn’t want to give up so easily.
“Where have you been all those years?” Why didn’t you search for me?”
“Sorry, can’t talk to you. Need to go out.”
Before she had the chance to say another word he had already hung up.
Her face was red as a tomato. That damn Edwin, how he dare he insult her like this? She would have to ask her dad to teach him a lesson. She went back to eating her food because she didn’t want to betray her feeling to the others in the room.
Charles and Bella finished eating before Katherine. They got up and left the room together. She saw Charles put his hand around her waist and bring his lips close to her ear.
“Let’s go outside for a walk,” he whispered.
Going for a walk with Charles used to Katherine’s privilege and now it had become Bella’s.
That damn Bella had taken away everything Katherine had fought for!
