Chapter 198 I Will Marry You
An hour later, Roy knocked on Bella’s door and asked her to go to the study. She closed the book she was reading and rushed to find Charles. The door of the study was open as if he was expecting her. Charles was seated behind the desk and reading some documents.
He laid them down and looked up at her the moment she entered.
A frown appeared on her face. Why had he asked for her if he was so busy?
He may have been acting in a nice manner lately but that reason was not good enough for her to cast aside her doubts. The struggle with Katherine over Charles’s heart was not over yet. Every time when things seemed to get better between herself and Charles there would come a moment that would shatter everything in pieces. This was what Charles was like. One day he would give her tenderness and the other he would give her cruelty. Her soul would never heal if things continued this way.
She decided to act patient and let him finish his business. She had figured out that the best way to get along with him was to show obedience and avoid questions. She would only talk whenever he asked for her opinion.
A few moments later, Ziv appeared at the door. Charles wanted to ask him about Dora. After driving them back to the mansion, Ziv had returned to the hospital to give Dora a dose of Elsa’s medicine. Bella was very pleased to hear that. She knew that the medicine could work miracles.
“The doctor said that if the wound doesn’t get worse in the next twelve hours, there will be no more danger.”
“Did you interrogate the man we brought back today? What about the woman?”
“Not yet, my Lord.” Ziv lowered his head in shame and waited for the outbreak of Charles’s fury. However, Charles didn’t even raise his head from the documents he was reading.
“I want you to tape the interrogation. Every single word of it.”
“Yes, my Lord. Who shall I interrogate first?”
“That’s up to you to decide. You can go now.”
After Ziv exited the room, Bella decided to speak out.
“I want to be there.”
Charles looked up at her as if he didn’t understand the language she was speaking.
“I want to be there when Ziv interrogates those people,” she said.
“Why would you expose yourself to such an ordeal? Things may get ugly, especially if the prisoners refuse to cooperate.”
“I think the people who did this to Dora are the same people who tried to kidnap me. I want to find out who they are.”
“Money is the most common motive,” said Charles. “The people who did this were after my money.”
“How can you be so sure? Maybe those people were my enemies and not yours.”
Charles raised his eyebrows. “I didn’t know you had enemies,” he said.
“Neither did I,” added Bella.
What she wanted to know was the identity of the person who wanted to kidnap her but Charles didn’t seem willing to help. His refusal to give a clear answer implied that he didn’t want her to go and that it would be pointless-possibly damaging to insist. The wisest thing she could do right now was change topic.
Charles handed her the mobile phone with Brandon’s photo. A broad smile appeared on Bella’s face upon seeing Brandon in his little suit.
“You like it? If you scroll down you’ll find more.”
Bella examined all five pictures one after the other in a very close manner. She leaned against the desk while looking at the pictures.
“It looks like he’s having a good life,” she said in a low voice.
It was hard to tell whether she was disappointed or excited by this revelation. Charles suspected that Bella felt a bit depressed because Brandon was doing very well without her help.
The background seemed like a palace with magnificent walls and chandeliers. In the background, she could see docile servants walking around with lowered heads. Wherever Brandon came from, he certainly wasn’t the poor abused boy she initially suspected him to be.
“You know,” said Charles. “The kid mentioned something funny. He said that he wants to marry you when he grows up.”
