Chapter 155 Change of Scenery
“Thank you Miss Katherine. By the way, the Lord is returning home with the Lady. They are about to arrive any time now.”
“Thank you for the tip,” said Katherine and hung up.
She was staring blankly at the bright screen in front of her. With one click of the mouse, two million dollars were wired to Anne’s account. Once that was done, she shut the laptop and gazed at the cup on the table. Her hand reached out for it.
By receiving a bullet for Charles’s sake, Bella had postponed her inevitable departure and it was now up to Katherine to speed up the process or else she would be the one that would have to leave.
She brought the cup to her lips and drank its ice cold contents. Within a few minutes, her face was pale as paper her body was shaking.
The porcelain cup slipped from her fingers and landed on the floor with a loud sound, cracking into countless small pieces. A second later, someone knocked on the door.
“Miss Katherine, is everything okay?”
“Please, help me!” cried out Katherine in a faint voice.
The maid opened the door only to find Katherine in a state of extreme suffering. She was clenching her chest and every breath that came out of her mouth seemed like the last.
The maid came closer to help her but Katherine avoided her touch.
“Call Charles at the office and tell him to get back here,” she said.
The maid had noticed earlier Charles walking across the yard with Bella by his side. She was new here and she knew that if she didn’t serve Katherine well, the Lord would be very angry with her.
“I think he is at Elsa’s. Let me fetch him.”
She rushed out of the Mansion and headed towards Elsa’s living quarters. Knowing that the Lord was in the company of the Lady she was unsure about how to approach him.
The door to Elsa’s was open and she could see him going back and forth in the middle of the room. The Lady didn’t seem well and he looked distresses.
She approached the door and knocked three times. His head turned toward her in a second.
“Miss Katherine just had an accident,” she uttered.
Charles immediately stormed out of the room without even saying goodbye to Bella. A teardrop fell onto her palm and she looked down upon it.
He had insisted on holding her hand throughout the meeting yet he now was walking away from her without looking back. Acting in such a heartless manner was so easy for him.
Despite her bad luck, she still felt lucky for having Elsa to look after her. The feeling of the old woman’s gentle hands upon her skin created a soothing effect upon her soul.
“Madame Elsa,” she uttered.
“What’s wrong? Have I done anything wrong?”
“Not at all. I was just wondering whether I should get pregnant by natural or artificial means. Do you think there’s a difference between those two?”
“If you want the child to be recognized as a legitimate heir to the Williams bloodline, he better be conceived by natural means. Such a child will have more vitality and emotions, and far larger chances of survival.”
“I see,” said Bella.
“Why didn't you and the Lord have a baby yet?”
Tears began rolling down Bella’s cheeks.
“He loves Katherine. How can I just give birth to his child?”
“In that case, what keeps you here?”
“I owe him a debt and I need to pay it back.”
Realizing this was a case of doomed love, Elsa shook her head silently.
“Now let me change your bandages and apply some antiseptic to help your wound recover faster.”
Suddenly Charles stormed into the room holding Katherine in his arms. He laid her on the couch besides Bella and grabbed Elsa from the arm.
“You got to save Katherine.”
“I have to clean the Lady’s wound first.”
A low moan escaped Katherine’s mouth.
“I’m dying!”
“No, you won't die,” said Charles.
He turned to Elsa and his eyes were gleaming with anger.
“I order you to save her, right now.”
“All right,” said Elsa and shouted out a name. A man in a white suit appeared and began changing Bella’s bandages while she bent over Katherine to take a better look.
“What’s wrong with you?” she asked.
“My stomach,” said Katherine in a faint voice.
“She drank something by mistake,” said Charles.
“Do we know what it is?”
“The cup was broken.”
“Let me prepare something for her.”
Elsa opened a cupboard and took out some little bottles, which she began to mix in a cup. She gave the mixture to Katherine who after a while began to feel better.
Katherine looked up at Charles weakly and smiled. “I’m sorry, honey, I worry you again.”
“Miss Katherine is not in good health. Don't drink cold things during your period.”
“I wanted to eat ice cream so much.”
“Never repeat such a thing again,” said Charles in a strict tone.
He helped Katherine stand up and together they walked out of the room. Charles did not even shoot a glance towards Bella’s direction. He seemed to have forgotten he brought her here.
Seeing that her assistant was not doing a good job, Elsa send him away so that she could take care of Bella’s wound.
“You must forgive him. He is only an intern without much experience. Let me take care of you.”
Indeed, after a while Bella’s shoulder began to feel better. However, the dark pit in her soul was getting bigger and bigger. She wanted to scream out in pain and despair.
Only this time there was nobody that could help her.
