Chapter 152 An Intimate but Unreliable Relationship
“Who did it?” sneered Beck.
“It would be better if you heard the story from Jack,” said Nick.
“All right. Let’s call him in.”
He called out his servant’s name. A few moments later Jack appeared at the door.
“What can I do for you, Second Master?” he asked in a submissive tone.
“Tell us what happened last night,” said Nick. He was sitting with his hands on his knees. His hair was falling over his eyes in a careless manner, blocking his view of Jack who was standing in front of him.
“Master, I was planning to report to you this morning after you had woken up. I wanted to inform you that the attempt last night against Charles failed because the woman shielded him with her body.” The tone of Jack’s voice betrayed a dose of fear. He was concerned about his Master’s reaction.
“You mean that the woman was injured because she took a bullet for Charles?”
“Yes,” replied Jack. “A member of our team was captured and sent to the Deep-Sea Elder Council. I am afraid this means some trouble for my Master.”
Nick whistled and looked at Beck who shrugged casually. “You just heard it. My lovely sister-in-law was willing to take a bullet for the sake of my elder brother. It seems that your love is in vain.”
Knowing that it wasn’t Nick’s intention to hurt Bella made Beck feel much better. He could accept that bullets acted indiscriminately when performing the task, but he wasn’t ready to accept Nick hurting Bella just because he wanted to harm Charles.
What he had not anticipated was Bella’s intense love for Charles. This did not seem any longer like an act of coercion. If Bella was willing to sacrifice herself for Charles then she was passionately in love with him.
Nick waved his hand for Jack to go out then he stared at Beck.
“You’re still thinking about your little lover? I think you had better give up and come back to where you’re needed.”
“If I don’t find what I’m looking for I shall never leave,” said Beck and licked his lips.
“Did you ever consider the possibility that what you’re searching may not be in the Beck family?”
“The Beck family possesses the most advanced biotechnology facilities in the world. I don’t think that there is anyone else who can remove the hippocampus without affecting the overall brain structure,” said Beck.
“How about Devenport Lab? They are also interested in the existence of our mermaid group. The number of high-level mermaids hunted down has increased in recent years. It’s obvious they are looking for us.”
“Bella’s hippocampus was removed fifteen years ago, that was way before Devenport Lab. This means it can only be the Beck family.”
“Sooner or later I will find out who is behind the mermaid deaths.”
“I personally don’t care too much about that. It’s none of my business.”
“I believe that it is your businesses. Unless you’re not the War God of the Sea Kingdom any longer.”
This last comment made Nick angry. How could someone like Beck doubt his divine powers?
He suddenly raised his hand and a jet of seawater shot out of his palm with tremendous force. It would have hit Beck if he had not jumped out of its way. Instead, the stream hit the wall with such impact the whole villa shook violently.
Nick raised his hand again and the magical orb withdrew back to his palm until it finally disappeared.
“Never say such a thing again,” he said in a deadly serious tone.
“Sorry for hurting your feelings,” said Beck.
As if he wanted to compensate for offending Nick, Beck bent forward and landed a kiss on his lips. It was restrained and brief, yet without doubt, it was a real kiss.
Nick didn’t seem particularly shocked about Beck kissing him. He wiped his lips and sneered back at him.
“Turns out you’re not such a good kisser.”
Beck was taken aback by these words and his expression was very strange.
“It’s just a small token of affection,” said Beck.
“I understand if you decided to fall in love with me because your little lover has a crush on Charles. I really do get it. After all, human feeling are so complicated. Do keep in mind though that I prefer my women thin. I like to be able to wrap my arms around their waist but yours is too wide.”
“Shut up!” Beck snorted. “I’ve had enough of this crap. What kind of person are you? Your mind is full of filth! Why don’t you focus on your actual problems for once?”
“What problems are you talking about?”
How you’re going to deal with your brother, for example.”
“I already know that I’m in deep shit,” said Nick in a pragmatic manner.
“What do you intend to do about it?”
“Nothing in particular. I don’t think my life is in serious danger. Not for the moment, at least.”
Then he clapped and called out for Jack.
“Master!” said Jack and floated back in the room.
“Let the people at Devenport Lab know there is a mermaid in William’s Mansion. I’d suggest you hack into a celebrity’s tweet and delete the post after two minutes.”
“Consider it done,” said Jack and quickly left the room.
“Are you crazy?” asked Beck. “You’re going to get Bella hurt.” Beck's face looked extremely worried. Nick however did not seen to share his sentiment. He glanced at him with a sly smile on his lips.
“Don’t you understand? This way the people in Devenport Lab will help me confirm whether your little lover possesses the mermaid gene I’ve been looking for.”
“It would be better if you heard the story from Jack,” said Nick.
