Chapter 147 The Bodyguard

When it was all over, Bella raised her nightgown over her shoulder and stood up. It was her way of showing to Charles that it was time for him to leave.

From what it seemed, Charles didn’t get the hint. She had to find another way to oust him out of the room.

“I need to get dressed now.”

“Go ahead. I have already seen you naked.”

She ignored his comment and opened the wardrobe to choose what she was going to wear for the day. This didn’t mean that she was going to grant his wish. Her intention was to change clothes in the bathroom.

He must have sensed what she was trying to do. He blocked her way and put his arms around her waist. He laid his chin on her good shoulder and tried to lay a kiss on her neck.

Bella was going to push him away when she felt a sudden sting on her shoulder. The shot of pain was so quick it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

Bella laughed upon realizing that his sole intention was to obtain a sample of her blood. He would never have touched her otherwise.

“Your blood is so precious, you can’t allow it to spill like cheap wine,” he whispered to her ear.

She knew very well where he was taking things. However, she was determined to resist.

“Lord, I must wash now. Need to go to the office,” she said and slipped out of his arms.

“You had better stay at home today,” he said.

“Aren’t you afraid of what will happen if I bump into Miss Spencer by chance?”

“You have a point there,” he said and lowered his gaze.

“I am better off at the office. The worst thing that can happen is Katherine and I meet face to face.”

“Then I will arrange for a driver to take you to work and bring you back.” His voice was much softer than before and his eyes were gleaming with a tenderness that she had never witnessed before.

“Thank you,” said Bella and walked into the bathroom.

He stood there and watched the bathroom door shut in his face.

The moments of pain and agony flashed in his memory along with the question she had asked.

“Did you ever love me?”

The fear of losing Bella had made him change the way he treated her. He was unable to treat her in a cold-hearted manner anymore. Worst of all, he was reluctant to let her go of her even though he had promised to eternally love Katherine.

When Bella got out of the bathroom, she found that Charles had left. The luxury of having breakfast on her own was a great sensation yet she couldn’t help feeling miserable about that way things were turning out.

She concluded that she shouldn’t go after someone that didn’t belong to her. This led to the inevitable decision that from now on she would need to apply some self-restraint to her emotions.

When she got out, she saw a brand new car parked outside the gate. Standing next to it was a young man in a white uniform. From the way he smiled, she realized this was the driver who would be taking her to work from now on.

“Lady, my name is Abraham Hunter,” he said and bowed before her. “From now on I will be your driver and bodyguard.”

He helped her to the back seat of the car before he got behind the steering wheel.

“Do you know where the Williams Building is?” she asked.

“Yes, I do, Lady.” Abraham looked young and replied to her questions in an enthusiastic manner.

“How old are you? How long have you been with Lord Williams?”

Abraham was hesitating before replying, “Eighteen, my Lady. I have been working for Lord Williams since the beginning of this year.”

What he actually meant was that he was eighty-one years old!

“Were you specially trained before you could serve Lord Williams?”

“Of course. Our training as Royal Guards starts at a very early age.

Only qualified guards are allowed to serve Lord Williams. It took less than ten years for Ziv and some of my brothers to finish their training.”

“How about yourself?”

This is where Abraham started getting nervous.

“For me…It took…Over ten years.”

“But you finally made it.”

“Eventually…”

“Do you believe it is a great honor to serve for Lord Williams?”

She knew very well that the duties of a bodyguard required they work in twenty-four shifts to guard the Mansion. None of them had anything that resembled a personal life. Yet they were willing to go through several years of hard training for a life that didn’t offer much in term of rewards. This was unbelievable to Bella.

“Of course, we have sworn eternal allegiance to Lord Williams,” he said in a proud tone.

“Working as my private chauffeur is not the same thing, you know.”

“It is my great honor to protect our Lady and future mother of our Lord’s heir.”

From the way his eyes were gleaming through the rear-view mirror, she could tell how passionate he was about serving her. If she was in his position, she could not imagine how miserable she would be feeling.

Very soon, the car had arrived at Williams Building and it was time for Bella to get out. Once more, she waited for Abraham to open the door for her.

“Pick me up at five,” she said.

“Lady, our Lord has ordered me to guard you wherever you go.”

“In that case, you had better park the car into the parking lot and wait for me there. Whenever I need you, I’ll give you a call.”

“As you wish.”

The last thing she wanted was for him to follow her around all day. Didn’t Charles realize that he would causing her inconvenience with his stupid decisions? How was she supposed to work with some tailing her all day?

What she didn’t know yet was that Charles had also taken other actions regarding her working environment. The moment Bella sat behind her desk, Shirley showed up to inform her that she would be attending the morning meeting.

Thanks to Charles, Bella would be attending all meetings from now on.

“The first thing I saw when I turned on my computer this morning was an email by Ziv Williams, expressing Lord Charles’ desire that you play a more active role in our business,” explained Shirley.

“Wow,” said Bella. She simply could not believe her ears.

“Why don’t you grab your notebook and come to the conference room? It’s time to get started.”
