Chapter 143 Night Call Re-edited
Charles clenched his lips in a firm line while his finger tapped the impatiently the surface of the table.
“Go on,” he asked in a solemn manner.
“I am not sure about what I ought to say,” said Roy in an apologetic tone that betrayed his hesitation.
“Just start talking.”
“I must confess that Lady never thought of herself as your wife.”
In return, Roy received an icy cold gaze from Charles. If looks could kill, he would be lying dead on the floor.
“Tell me more.”
Roy swallowed nervously before he continued.
“Lady may not be close to us but she treats us better than anybody else. We all respect her very much. That is why we think it’s not fair for her to leave this place for the sake of Miss Spenser.”
“If she does leave one day, will you still regard her as Lady Williams?”
“Of course,” said Roy. “Lady is the only one who can give birth to your heir. In our hearts she will always be the Lady Williams.”
Charles had heard enough. He raised his hand to give an end to the conversation.
“You can leave now,” he said.
Roy gave a respectful bow and exited the room. As he was about to close the door behind him Charles gave one last order.
“Could you ask Bella to come here?”
“What if Lady is asleep?”
“Wake her up.”
“Yes, my Lord.”
Roy closed the door behind him and headed downstairs. Upon encountering Ziv, he raised his hand to make the V sign. For the first time in ages, he found himself smiling.
From now on, he ought to try his best to bring Lady Williams closer to Lord Williams despite the tough competition.
He had been Lord Williams’s butler since he moved out of the Kingdom of the Sea and was well aware of Katherine’s mood swings. Believing she was Lord William’s beloved one, she even dared to shout at Aunt Elsa. Little did she realize that in the eyes of many people she had become the subject of jokes.
Lord Williams was also aware of these sudden whims, but he could not help indulging her. After all, she had once saved his life.
Ever since Bella’s marriage to Lord Williams, it was essential that Katherine remain out of the way. She was unpredictable in her acts and capable of doing much harm.
As long as they were both under the same roof, Bella would never be safe.
Bella hadn’t fallen asleep yet, she was still reading a book on product design under the dim light of her bedside lamp. She did not have much experience as a designer; therefore, it was necessary to acquire more knowledge on the subject.
“Who is it?” she asked upon hearing the knock on her door.
“Lady, I have a message for you,” announced the butler’s voice from outside.
She got out of bed and opened the door.
“What’s the matter?” she asked.
“Lord wants you to go to his study.”
“Charles? When did he come back?”
“Just a few minutes ago.”
“Do you know what is it he wants to talk about?”
“Sorry Lady. I’m merely an insignificant butler.”
“All right. I will be there in a minute.” Bella nodded and stepped out of the door.
The reason Charles wanted to see Bella was to ask her to leave the Williams Mansion within the next three days. Katherine was very persistent on this and he had to find a way to please her.
On the way to the study, Bella could not help compare herself to Katherine. Despite her conviction that she wasn’t good enough to compare with her, she was unable to let go.
She tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ears and walked down the corridor to the study. Ziv bowed and opened the door for her to enter the room.
“Lady, please.”
“Thank you,” she said with a smile full of kindness on her face.
Now Charles understood what Roy had said about Bella not been able to regard herself as the Lady of the Mansion.
Bella set her eyes upon Charles. They may have been apart for only half a day but she felt as if it had been for centuries.
That’s how much she missed him.
He sat there and watched her as she entered the room. There wasn’t much emotion in his eyes. Despite his detached manner, his irresistible features emitted some sort of magnetism that drew her close to him. He was so handsome with his dashing brows and sparkling eyes. One of his arms was resting on the surface of the table while the other hung from his side.
In a lame attempt to hide her tears, she lowered her head and brought her hand to her nose.
“Why do you think I called you here?” asked Charles.
Bella lifted her head and looked at him, “I assume it is about me leaving the Mansion.”
She was surprised by the fact that she was brave enough to voice her thoughts, yet her heart was not less painful.
Charles’s blank eyes looked straightly into hers. He stretched out his hand.
“Come here, Bella,” he said.
“What for? It seems you have already made your decision. I cannot understand why you asked me to come here. You could have the servants deliver the messages to me.”
Charles could not believe his ears. How dare she refuse him in such a manner!
He stood up and kicked the chair aside.
“Bella, you are so…”
Before he had the chance to finish the sentence, a loud noise, like a gunshot, came from outside. In less than a second, the window of the study was shattered and pieces of glass were scattered over the thick carpet.
Bella seemed unaware of the danger. Even though there were more bullets flying into the room from the broken window, she wanted to look outside.
“Lie down.” shouted Charles. He shot forward like a rugby player and grabbed her from the waist before dragging to the floor with him. To protect her from any stray bullets he laid on top of her, pressing her delicate body to the cold floor.
“Charles, Charles…”
“Hush!”
Charles put his index finger on her lips to stop her from talking.
The bullets kept on flying around them. Small bits of wood were flying around each time a bullet hit a piece of furniture.
“Someone is shooting at us!”
“Indeed!” said Charles.
Bella’s face was pale as a ghost’s and her lips had lost their own color. She felt so paralyzed that her body seemed to be stuck on the ground.
Recalling the most horrible things she had experienced until now, two instances immediately sprung up. One was the moment when those rogues hired by Len Sander had abused her mother, and the other was that time Charles had tossed her into the sea.
What she was now experiencing was so far removed from her everyday experiences it almost felt surreal. For the first time in her life, she realized how much she feared death.
One of the bullets hit the chandelier and it crashed to the floor with a deafening sound. A small glass fragment pierced her skin and embedded itself in the soft flesh. An intense wave of terror swept through her entire nervous system, paralyzing her body.
Now she knew what it meant to be fully petrified.
“What if Lady is asleep?”
“Wake her up.”
“Yes, my Lord.”
