Chapter 63 – Wake Up
“Is it the MD Anderson Clinic? Thank you. I will be there as soon as possible.” Bella was insanely worried.
She rushed out of the room without changing her clothes after she hung up the phone. In the next moment, she pushed the door of Charles’s room open.
He had just come out of the bathroom with only a towel covering his lower body. His hair was still wet and water droplets on his body.
If it were any other time, Bella would have turned around immediately out of bashfulness, but now she had to face him and ask to let her go out. Her mother needed her.
Charles looked at her. Her hair was messy, and her eyes were filled with tears.
Did she cry? Is she in pain?
He thought about what Elsa said, that it was harmful to a girl to do strenuous exercise on her period, Charles narrowed his eyesight.
“My Lord, I…I need a deal. I need to go out. Could I come back later today to fulfil my end of it with you? My mum is in the hospital.”
Bella had no choice but to beg him like that. She despised those words, but it was the only way she could leave.
“What happened to your mom?” Charles glanced at her reservedly and asked. He sighed in relief that her tears were not due to her being in physical pain.
“I have no idea. Please let me go and find out what happened.”
Suddenly Bella knelt down, “I will no longer talk with Edwin even if I run into him again.” She looked up at him and said hurriedly, “You can get someone to follow me. You can tell them to stop me from meeting Edwin. Please let me see my mum. Please…”
Charles raised Bella’s chin as she was about to bow.
Charles bent down and straightened up slowly with his hand raising Bella’s chin. Bella had to stand up with him. Charles felt tormented by the sight of the tears that fell along her pale cheeks.
He then fixed his eyes on the crystal alarm clock and replied, “Come back at 11:00 p.m. Don’t be late.”
“No problem. Thank you, my Lord.” Bella had never been as grateful to him as she was right now.
Bella ran back to her room and changed her clothes quickly.
He looked at her rush around, she reminded him of a fish out of the water, flopping around haphazardly. Charles opened his hand, and in the center of his palm, there was a small pool of water.
She had always been unyielding. Every time she begged for something it was always for her mother.
When would she beg for herself?
After she changed her clothes. Bella took her bag and phone and rushed to the door.
Roy waited for her at the front of the mansion, “My Lady, please come with me. The Lord asked me to give you a lift.”
It was more like he was spying.
Bella had no time to think about that. She hopped in the car immediately and told Roy the address.
On the way to the hospital, Bella called the number; the same man answered the phone. He told Bella that he found her mother on the ground covered in blood on his way home from work. He then sent her to the nearby hospital and called the police.
Covered in blood?
Bella attempted to imagine what he saw, but she could not. She thanked the man with a voice that trembled and hung up the phone. She had a bad feeling, would her mother never return home after this? Would she lose her forever?
No, it would not happen.
Bella slapped herself in the face.
Don’t be blind to any other outcomes! Mum would be fine. She is at a great hospital.
Roy saw her slap herself from the rearview mirror and said softly, “Madam, please take care of yourself.”
Bella could not really hear him, but she murmured, “It'll be okay, everything will be fine.”
When Bella rushed to the emergency room of the hospital, a young man stood there waiting for her. He spoke to her as she came near, “Your mother is still in the operating room. The police officers have just left and have taken her phone as evidence.”
Bella thanked him.
“You’re welcome.” The man sighed at the sight of Bella’s pale face.
The doctor would tell her the results.
“Now that you are here, I better go home now. My family is waiting for me.”
“Wait a minute,” Bella asked him to stop. “What’s your name. I must repay your kindness.”
“No sweat.”
The man then left.
Two hours later, the room’s lights went out. The door opened, and a doctor wearing a white coat came out of the room. His voice was cold. “Who is the relative of Bess Brook?”
Bella came toward the doctor and asked anxiously, “Doctor, I’m her daughter, what is wrong with my mum?”
“The patient was stabbed four times. The wounds are deep. She has a concussion from a heavy hit to the head. Though her vital signs are stable, she is in a coma, and the possibility of her waking up is very low. Please be prepared for that.”
What?
Bella was scared and stepped back. She stared at the doctor and could not believe what she had heard, “What do you mean by the possibility of waking up is low?”
“She might never wake up from the coma and be on life support. You will then have to make a choice, whether to keep her on it or put her in palliative care, I’m sorry Miss Brook.”
Bella felt the whole world collapse around her. The most important person in her life was in a coma and might not wake up.
What is the point of her being alive if her mother isn’t?
He saw the enormous grief on her face, he continued with his explanation, “The care here is good, there is only a 30 % chance that she will not wake up, Don’t give up on her, talk to her, sometimes that helps bring coma patients out. Give it time.”
“Yes. My mum will certainly wake up. She will.” The tears in her eyes blurred her vision, but she still looked at the doctor attentively, “I won’t give up. Please do your best to treat her. I will do anything to help.“
“The nurse will give you the treatment plan.”
Bella nodded her head and stabilized herself against the wall.
She took a deep breath to calm herself.
Mum will wake up. Everything was going to be okay.
It was already past eleven.
Bella sat beside Bess’s hospital bed. She sobbed at the sight of her mother. Bess’s face and body were wrapped in bandages, she could only imagine what the wounds under the gown were like.
The nurse had come to the room to talk about treatment options and price. The cost was high, way more than they had at $25,000 per month, which equalled to $300,000 per year.
Hopefully Mum would wake up way before the year was up.
She had no money. But there was always a way to get some, she would do anything.
Bella whispered, “Mum, don’t be afraid. We have money. I will not give up on you. Mum, I know you are only tired. It doesn’t matter. Please remember to wake up when you’ve got enough rest.”
Bess’s face was covered with tubes and machines. Bella was unable to see it clearly.
Bella did not know how she got back to Williams mansion. She was preoccupied with reciting the words she was going to tell Charles.
The moment she came in she saw Charles walk toward his bedroom from the exercise room that was on the second floor.
Bella followed him without hesitation. Charles didn’t notice her and closed the door on her hand. She did not care about the pain, she barely even felt it in her state of mind.
She rushed out of the room without changing her clothes after she hung up the phone. In the next moment, she pushed the door of Charles’s room open.
