2 Something Strange
Once we were some distance from the school. Oliver finally let go of my hand. I was trying to catch my breath from all the running we just did. I was still so confused about why we were running, "Oliver, why did you just grab me and run?" he just stared at me in shock like he couldn't believe I even asked that question. "You don't know who you are, do you?" "What are you talking about Oliver? I'm a 15-year-old girl that lives in Tennessee, and there isn't anything to know about me." Oliver just shook his head, let's get you home before your mom starts to worry, luckily my house wasn't too far from where we stopped.
We didn't speak the whole way home, not a word, when we got closer to the farm, I noticed my mother was standing on the porch looking around. "O man I am in trouble, I didn't even call her to let her know I was going to be late." When I got to the porch, my mom instantly started freaking out," Artemis, where have you been? I heard howling, are you ok?" Before I could speak, Oliver said, "yes ma'am I am sorry that I have Artemis home so late we were studying she was appointed my tutor for the semester." My mom looked just as shocked as I did but not for the same reason, I have never had any boy over before well except for Genius. I, on the other hand, I was shocked because that is not what just happened why wasn't he telling my mom what happened. My mom and Oliver had a conversation on the porch, which in any case was weird to me because he just met my mother.
After what seemed like forever, my mom went into the house. She left Oliver and me outside to talk alone. "Oliver, will you tell me what is going on? Why did my best friend growl at me?" He just stood there and stood at me, almost like he was confused about why I didn't know the answer to the question. After a brief pause, he just smiled and looked at me" Artemis don't worry about that for now, I think you should go inside and speak to your mother." He left me with that sentence, and he just left me standing there with my mouth wide open. I finally got the courage to go inside afraid that my mother was cross with me for being late and bringing a boy home with me.
But when I walked inside, my mom was sitting on the chair in the living room, she honestly looked upset. I hope I didn't cause her to be upset, and I hate seeing my mom upset. I have never liked my mom being mad or upset with me. "Mom, what's wrong?" "Are you angry with me for being late?, I am sorry I just lost track of time" She just looked at me with tears running down her face " Baby girl, I am so sorry for everything, I have kept so much from you trying to protect you. But I see now that maybe that wasn't what was best." I just looked at her with astonishment, what could she be talking about we have never hide anything from each other. " Mom, what are you talking about?" " I am sorry for being late I didn't mean to upset you at all." I was shocked. I wasn't sure what was going on my mom just started crying more, I couldn't make out anything she was saying to me. "Mom, where is my brother, where is Zeus?"
My brother could always get my mom to smile no matter if she was upset or angry, even when she was cross with him, he still managed to get a smile out of her. My mom just looked at me with such sadness in her eyes "He isn't here right now sweety, he went out with his friends he won't be home till around 5-5: 30 am, but let's just head to bed, for now, we can talk more tomorrow when your brother is home." Then she got up and went to her room, and I just kept staring at the stairs how could she say that then leave without explaining anything. I shook my head, I approached the stairs hoping to see her waiting on me, but she wasn't there she had already gone into her room and closed the door. So I walked up to the stairs, went into my room and threw my stuff on the bed. I went straight to the bathroom to take a long hot shower, hoping that maybe I would feel better after I took a shower.
When I got out of the shower, I put my pajamas on and went to lay down on the bed; I need to finish clearing my head before I could fall asleep. Or so I thought, I don't even remember falling asleep, but when I woke up it wasn't because it was time to. I woke up because I heard a blood-curdling scream. I was scared. I thought it was coming from outside, but suddenly I heard it again coming from my mom's room. I looked at the clock hoping it was 5:30 am already because my brother would be home and I wouldn't have to search by myself, but it wasn't it was only 4 am. Then again I heard another scream, so I jumped out the bed my feet barely touching the floor, I flung my door open and started running down the hall to my mother's room. When I opened my mother's door all I could see was blood, it was everywhere, piles of it on the floor, streaks of it on the walls and ceilings. There even was a handprint made of blood on the wall, then I looked to the corner and there my mom was sitting with her chest ripped wide open, stomach slashed open to the point her organs were leaking out on to the floor. I wanted to scream, I tried to scream, but the moment I opened my mouth to cry, I heard a growl coming from my mom's closet.
I heard the deepest, growl I had ever heard come from her closet when this big black wolf came out of the closet, it had bright white eyes like the figure I had seen outside my bedroom window and again at school. I slowly started backing up, trying not to give it any reason to attack me, I backed up so far I hit my back on the handle of the door. The wolf kept getting closer to me, but somehow, I managed to get myself out the door and slam my mother's door shut. I took off, running down the hall to my room. I rushed into my room and slammed the door. I started piling anything substantial that I could lift or push with my legs in front of the door. I jumped over my bed, landing hard on the floor.
I reached on the bed and grabbed my cellphone, I dialed my brother's number, it just kept ringing and ringing, but he didn't answer. I pressed the end call button and immediately dialed 9-1-1, it was buzzing when the operator answers suddenly "9-1-1 what's your emergency?" I was still shaking from what I had just seen, and the wolf was trying to get into my room, "Yes ma'am there is a wolf in my house, it has attacked my mother, I am home alone, and I believe my mother is dead." The operator took a second to realize what I had just said: " What's your address, ma'am?" The wolf was getting louder and louder as it tried to force itself into my room, " 1641 wolfsbane drive Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Please hurry, the wolf is starting to split my door." I was freaking out, what in the world is going on, "Ma'am we have police, ambulance, and wildlife services on the way you should be hearing them now, please stay with me on the phone till they arrive."
At this moment, I was petrified, the wolf with the bright white eyes had already splintered my door enough to get his muzzle in. If they don't hurry, there isn't going to be anyone alive here to help them. I heard the sirens, " Operator, I hear the sirens, and I see the lights there pulling up the driveway now." "Ok, thank you, ma'am, I will stay with you until the officer's get you out safely." The moment the wolf had heard the sirens, it took off, it quit banging on the door and disappeared.
But I didn't dare move until the officers got inside, I was scared for my life. I heard the officers come inside I informed the 9-1-1 operator and she hung up with me. I saw the officers through the hole in my door; they went to the door and asked for me to open it. I got up off the floor and moved everything from in front of the door and met them outside my bedroom door. The one officer I recognized because he had mentored my brother for a while, officer Jacob. He immediately came to me, and before I could even say anything, he asked, " What happen Artemis, you said there was a wolf here, where did it go, where is your mom. where is your brother?"
He asked so many questions before I could even process the first question he asked me, so I took a big breath in so that I could try to answer them as best as I could without crying. " The wolf was here, as soon as it heard the sirens it just took off, my mom is in her bedroom there is a lot of blood, please help her, my brother should be home in a few minutes he was with his friends." As soon as I finished, I started crying, I dropped to the floor and just sobbed, Officer Jacob, bent down beside me and hugged me. " Artemis it's going to be ok your safe now your safe." He walked me outside, and he made me sit down on the back of the ambulance, that is when my brother's car pulled into the driveway. I don't even think my brother put the car into park before he jumped out and ran to me. "Artemis what happened are you ok, Is mom ok?" I just started crying again, and I couldn't look at my brother I was scared not sure what was going on. Everything just hit me at once, and my mom is dead; a wolf killed her, wolf's don't go into people's houses and eat them.
That's when Officer Jacob pulled my brother off to the side and from what I can only assume started to explain everything that had happened. The next thing I know my brother takes off into the house, yelling for our mom like he didn't believe Officer Jacob. Officer Jacob ran in after him, once Zeus saw mom's room he came back down, you could see he was upset and angry. But when he got back to the ambulance, all he did was hug me, " I am sorry, Art, I should have been home so I could protect you and mom." He was blaming himself for something that was out of his control, and he couldn't have protected us from the wolf. "Big brother, it's not your fault you couldn't have protected mom or me from the wolf you would have just got hurt too." Zeus just stared at me like I was stupid, but then he just looked down sadly like he wanted to say something but he couldn't right now.
Officer Jacob came back over, "Artemis, are you ready to go down to the station so we can you can fill out a witness report on what happens." " Zeus can come with you, and Zeus your 18 now right?" Zeus just stared at him blankly, he was trying to figure out why he was asking such a silly question, but I knew why he was asking. Zeus looked at me before answering, " Yes, I am, but what has that have to do with what's going on now?" Officer Jacob shook his head in disbelief " Really, Zeus, you have to come down to the station to talk to child protective services, since your mom was the only parent they are going to want to know if you want to take care of Art, and then they will explain everything you need to do." Immediately my brother got angry " Of course, I will take care of my sister what kind of question is that I am not just going to let anyone take her. We are all we have now."
I touched Zeus on his shoulder to calm him, and I had never seen my brother get this angry about anything, especially when it came to me. "Zeus, it's ok nobody going to take me away from you, I am your sister, after all, I don't want to be with anyone but you." Zeus wrapped his arms around me " Come on Art, let's get you down to the station so we can get this day over with." And with that, Officer Jacob drove us downtown to the police station. Zeus and I didn't speak the whole way there, I laid my head in his lap and cried the entire way there. My brother kept playing with my hair to try and soothe me because that is what my mother used to do when I was upset or not feeling good. I knew he was trying to help but that just seemed to make it worse, I saw my mom tore apart and what's worse is the wolf almost had me if it wasn't for the police. I decided to go to sleep because the drive to the police station can take a while to get there, especially with the traffic that is up ahead.
